It can also be very unpleasant and cause coughing. It may be hard to drink enough thick liquids to stay hydrated. To make sure you get enough liquids, you may be able to drink water between meals. This pamphlet gives guidelines for drinking water safely between meals for people with swallowing problems so that there is less chance of choking. The French version of this pamphlet 2196, "Boire de l’eau entre les repas," is also available.
