- This book describes the issues and challenges that clinicians encountered in the management of older critically ill patients during the Covid-19 pandemic, and offers practical information on how to manage them. Older adults are more susceptible to complications such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) as a result of viral pneumonia. In addition, they often have multiple comorbidities and are commonly frail, which means their various organs and systems, such as the respiratory system, have reduced functional reserves. As such, older adults are less able to react to acute stressors. During the current Covid-19 pandemic, older adult patients' mortality is increased. Further, the infection and death rates of elderly people in nursing homes and health care institutions are high. Management of older adults with Covid is complicated. The reduced availability of beds may limit their access to ICU. Moreover, the prognosis may be poor, and airway management and ventilation strategies have to take into account various clinical and physiological characteristics specific to older patients. This book is addressed to all allied professionals involved in the management of older critically ill patients and presents information collected and practical lessons learned from the clinical daily management of this population during the pandemic.

- This book is an introduction to a comprehensive analysis of recent advances and clinical research in noninvasive mechanical ventilation (NIV) in Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine. The objective of the book is to increase the knowledge and understanding of the reader in the best clinical practice in three main sections. A selected international group of experts in the field of noninvasive ventilation formed a panel to provide an update on the recent literature in the application and efficient utilization of NIV in Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine. Each particular section will discuss the application of NIV in different disease process. The authors summarized the main results of the recent trials, clinical and technological advances, expert opinions, and practical guidelines. Chapters, summarized by expert committee, provide a “deep and exhaustive critical analysis and summary” of the recent advances in the field of NIV, presented as key points and/recommendations for the best clinical practice from articles published in the last decade. The content of the book will serve as a resource and a tool to the practicing physicians toward NIV. Main objective is to increase their proficiency in management of different pathophysiological aspects of the respiratory system. In this line, the book offers to the readers, who are seeking the latest recommendations, the future research directions in noninvasive mechanical ventilation. - This book contains a collection of the most recent insights regarding maternal morbidity and mortality and optimization of the care processes during acute critical illness. The volume represents a practical resource to be used in real-time by medical practitioners faced with a woman who is critically ill during pregnancy and the peripartum period. By providing concise tools for disease identifiers and management flow-charts, the Editors aimed to increase awareness and improve processes of care for this population. Many care paradigms for obstetric patients are currently unstandardized, unfocused and often do not follow a pre-determined path. Each chapter will provide the practitioner with updated information on how to identify specific critical conditions and how to manage them once they have been identified, to enhance recognition and readiness. This book should be used as a resource to improve the quality of care administered to obstetric patients, to reduce fragmented care processes and to improve interdisciplinary co-ordination and communication, with the overall aim of decreasing maternal morbidity and mortality.
