Abstract
This timely resource organizes and presents the most up-to-date, evidence-based information on the evaluation and management of all aspects of proximal femur fractures, divided into three succinct sections. Part I discusses basic principles, including anatomy, biomechanics and surgical approaches to the proximal femur. Detailed chapters focusing on individual fracture locations and types comprise part II, such as femoral head and neck fractures, intertrochanteric and subtrochanteric fractures, and nonunions. Optimal perioperative medical management and quality and safety concerns are presented in part III. Each chapter includes a section on evidence-based considerations, and authors present their preferred methods of treatment as well as case examples, where applicable. Providing a quick review of the newest evidence, but also allowing for an in-depth review of the details associated with specific fracture types around the hip, Proximal Femur Fractures provides the orthopedic and trauma surgeon with essential information when preparing for any particular proximal femur fracture procedure.
Contents
1. Anatomy of the Proximal Femur -- 2. Biomechanics of the Hip -- 3. Approaches to the Hip -- 4. Fractures of the Femoral Head -- 5. Femoral Neck Fractures in the Young -- 6. Abstract
This book focuses on orthogeriatrics, a topic that has received little attention in the literature to date. As active members of the Fragility Fracture Network (FFN), the editors and most of the authors of this book have gathered all essential expertise on hip fracture management in a single volume. The 14 chapters provide a complete overview of how to approach fractures in elderly patients, starting with the epidemiology of hip fractures and subsequently addressing osteoporosis, surgery, anesthesia, medical management of frailty, and peri-operative complications. Attention is also given to rehabilitation and nursing, as well as to the psychological evaluation of the patient and the caregivers, thus emphasizing the importance of a multidisciplinary approach. Thanks to its clinical and practice-oriented nature, the book will especially be of interest to residents and young geriatricians, as well as orthopaedic surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses dealing with elderly fracture patients in all parts of the world.
Contents
1. The orthogeriatric approach: progress worldwide -- 2. Epidemiology of hip fracture and social costs -- 3. Osteoporosis in elderly patients -- 4. Frailty, sarcopenia, falls and fractures -- 5. Pre-operative management -- 6. Hip fracture: the choice of surgery -- 7. Orthogeriatric anaesthesia -- 8. Post-operative management -- 9. The nursing role -- 10. Rehabilitation following hip fracture -- 11. Multi-professional team: coordination and communication -- 12. How to implement a fracture liaison service -- 13. Management of older people with hip fractures in China and India: a systems approach to bridge evidence-practice gaps -- 14. The psychological health of patients and their caregivers.
