Abstract
In the emergency and trauma setting, accurate and consistent interpretation of imaging studies are critical to the care of acutely ill and injured patients. Emergency Radiology: Imaging of Acute Pathologies is a comprehensive review of radiological diagnoses commonly encountered in the emergency room by radiologists, residents, and fellows. The book is organized by anatomical sections that present the primary ER imaging areas of the acute abdomen, pelvis, thorax, neck, head, brain and spine, and osseous structures. For each section, the common diagnoses are concisely described and are accompanied by relevant clinical facts and key teaching points that emphasize the importance of radiological interpretation in clinical patient management. The role of modalities such as plain radiography, CT, ultrasound, MR, and nuclear medicine imaging in managing emergency conditions is highlighted.

Abstract
This is the first time a book about laparoscopy in emergency abdominal surgery has been published. Numerous articles have been published in specific surgical journals, but, until now, there has not been a book that collates all the aspects of this little-known field. The aim of this volume is to achieve a complete and easy presentation of all the implications associated with laparoscopy in emergency abdominal surgery. The book should be a manual that can be easily consulted by digestive, general, and specialized surgeons, especially in an emergency. The authors' contributions are founded on evidence-based medicine, which give the book scientific credibility, but this is coupled with their experience of daily practice, which adds an important complementary dimension to evidence-based medicine. This is balanced by an emphasis on clarity and accessibility, because the ultimate aim of the book is educational. We hope this book will be frequently consulted, in depth, not only by specialist practitioners, but also by undergraduate students, new graduates and surgeons in training.

Abstract
This book provides a practical guide to the management of obstetric emergencies acute complications during pregnancy and childbirth that pose a life-threatening risk to the mother and/or the fetus, and whose treatment requires an almost immediate response from the healthcare team in order to guarantee a favorable outcome. The book covers two essential areas: the predominately fetal emergencies - acute fetal hypoxia/acidosis, shoulder dystocia, and retention of the aftercoming head; and the predominately maternal emergencies - eclampsia, maternal cardiorespiratory arrest and post-partum hemorrhage. The book offers a valuable guide for healthcare professionals who deal with obstetric patients, as they may use it for reviewing these rare situations and for consultation when they encounter them. It is also a useful reference manual for simulation-based courses designed to develop and maintain clinical expertise in this area. Healthcare professionals will find that this book offers a comprehensive and European perspective on the clinical management of these situations, as well as a pragmatic and reliable source of information for dealing with acute complications of pregnancy and childbirth.

Abstract
This text provides a comprehensive textbook summarizing the presentation, workup, and surgical solutions for common emergencies in the cancer patient. The use of medications (antibiotics, hormones, and biologic therapies) and interventional radiologic procedures as adjuncts or as replacements for the surgical solutions are discussed. The text covers emergencies that result as adverse effects for the systemic and local treatments for cancer, emergencies that result from mechanical issues with the cancer and those that result from surviving major extirpative surgery. Diagnosis and treatment of patients' immune-compromised or thrombocytopenic status from chemotherapy is discussed, as is surgical treatment in patients with prior complex surgical therapy or radiation treatment. Finally, the text covers alternatives to surgery, including new interventional radiologic and endoscopic procedures. Surgical Emergencies in the Cancer Patient will be of great value to healthcare professionals at all levels who are involved in the treatment of emergencies in the cancer patient. It is meant for a wide group of individuals, including medical students, residents in surgery and internal medicine, fellows in surgery and oncology, and practicing oncologists and surgeons. This work is meant to be a textbook for the student, a guide for the practitioner, and a reference for the general oncologist.

Abstract
This book is written for physicians who work within an emergency department or urgent care setting to provide them with a treatment plan for those patients who are deemed not to have an emergency medical situation and can be safely treated as an outpatient. Emergency physicians (EPs) see a wide variety of patients and ostensibly for emergency reasons. However, many patients present to the emergency department for primary care-related reasons due to multiple factors or are diagnosed with potentially chronic problems that require a primary care intervention. Examples include a new diagnosis of hypertension (without hypertensive emergency) or diabetes. Thus, it is prudent for the EP to learn about basic primary care management of these conditions. Unfortunately, the training of EPs does not include these conditions, and they are left to guess appropriate treatment or to start a new medication that may not be appropriate. This book aims to fill this gap by educating the EP on basic primary care interventions for specific conditions.

Abstract
With the expertise of an author panel of leading clinicians in the field of surgery, trauma, critical care and geriatrics the new edition of this text addresses the explosion in knowledge on the impact aging has on injury, acute illness and critical care management. The text covers the physiologic changes associated with aging, as well as the clinical assessment, stratification, and management of acute illness and injury. Furthermore, the new edition discusses the full spectrum of critical care management of the elderly. Part I explores the impact of aging on health and the healthcare system. There will be detailed discussion on the physiologic effects of aging and the impact on clinical management. The management of common surgical emergencies in the elderly is addressed in Part II. Part III addresses the evaluation and management of trauma and injury. Finally, Part IV explores the specific challenges of critical care management, including end-of-life and ethics, in the geriatric population. Updated information, reflective of the expansive literature, is addressed in all sections. New to the second edition are chapters on prehospital care, burns, nursing concerns, and abdominal solid organ injury. Appropriate chapters will include case vignettes and clinical algorithms. All chapters include a bullet-point summary. Geriatric Trauma and Critical Care, 2nd Edition will be of great value to trauma surgeons, acute care surgeons, critical care specialists, emergency medicine physicians, geriatricians, general surgeons, and trainees in surgery, critical care, and emergency medicine. Advanced practice nurses, critical care nurses, and physician assistants will also find this a useful and practical resource.

Abstract
This book is a rapid reference guide for all levels of medical staff working in emergency and acute care settings, but may also benefit nursing professionals and medical students. In this book, the readers will find diagnostic checklists, organised according to potential emergency presentations and classified under body systems, including atypical presentations, lists of differential diagnoses and guidance to pattern recognition. The book aims to help the reader achieve the correct diagnosis in an emergency setting, which continues to remain a challenge, given the variety of potential clinical presentations. Diagnostic failure is the largest reason for delays in provision of appropriate treatment and the largest source of clinical complaints and untoward incidents.

Abstract
Obstetrical emergencies can be among the most stressful events an emergency physician will face in their entire career. The purpose of this book is to provide an evidence-based, practical approach to the wide spectrum of obstetric complications an emergency physician must be prepared to manage throughout all trimesters pregnancy as well as postpartum, including complications of assisted reproductive technology, bleeding, precipitous delivery and preterm labor. Clinical pearls and pitfalls are highlighted throughout. The approach to the pregnant patient with trauma, non-pregnancy-related abdominal pain, or in cardiac arrest is discussed. Updates in the classification and management of the hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are presented. Recent controversies surrounding the use of anti-emetics for first trimester nausea and vomiting and the use of a beta-hCG discriminatory zone for the evaluation of pregnancy of unknown location are also addressed. Obstetrical support services vary widely between different facilities, and Emergency Department Management of Obstetric Complications is written for emergency clinicians in all practice settings. This book provides useful information for daily practice as well as preparation for rarely encountered and potentially life-threatening events.
Contents
1. Early Pregnancy Complications -- 2. Emergency Department Ultrasound in Pregnancy -- 3. Approach to the Patient with Nausea and Vomiting in Pregnancy -- 4. Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy -- 5. Bleeding in Late Pregnancy -- 6. Premature Rupture of Membranes and Preterm Labor -- 7. Precipitous Labor and Emergency Department Delivery -- 8. Evaluation and Treatment of Postpartum Hemorrhage -- 9. Cardiovascular Emergencies of Pregnancy -- 10. Cardiac Arrest in the Pregnant Patient -- 11. Trauma in Pregnancy -- 12. Abstract
This book provides clear, concise guidance on the surgical management of all kinds of emergent vascular problems and focuses in particular on open surgical strategies. The aim is to provide a combined text and hands-on guide that will permit rapid retrieval of information when treating vascular surgical patients in the emergency room. Emergency Vascular Surgery: A Practical Guide is organized into two sections, on specific body areas and general concepts. The first section covers the body from head to toe, with separate chapters for injuries and non-traumatic disease, while the second discusses general principles relating to emergent vascular surgical practice and provides broad vascular surgical guidelines for the inexperienced surgeon. Chapters in the first section are uniformly organized, addressing incidence, etiology, and pathophysiology; clinical presentation; suggestions for workup and diagnosis; and management and treatment. Initial management, selection of patients for emergent surgery, and the performance of common vascular surgical procedures are all carefully explained. The focus on a hands-on approach and practical tips will be invaluable in the clinical setting for both more experienced surgeons and newcomers to the field.

Abstract
This handbook on orbital, lacrimal and eyelid emergencies deals with such situations in a practical manner guiding the ophthalmologists in accurate handling and making them more proficient and confident in managing vision and life-threatening emergencies. With 51 chapters and more than 150 images, this book covers all the eye emergencies that generalist and specialist ophthalmologists can expect to come across in their day to day practices. It can be argued that the orbit can no more be called "Pandora's Box" because of the unpredictable nature of its contents. This perception has changed over the years due to the advent of improved diagnostic, in particular, imaging techniques. However, since medical residency provides very little exposure to orbital and adnexal disorders, most clinicians are inexperienced and unsure about their management. Facing an emergency situation where improper management can rapidly worsen the condition leading to blindness or even death of the patient is every ophthalmologist's nightmare. The emergent nature of these conditions does not always provide for a leeway to refer these patients to an orbit and oculoplasty specialist, who are few and far between. By the time the patient reaches his destination, his vision maybe irrevocably lost. The legal implications of such mismanagement can be significant too. This book is a quick and essential resource to manage and refer eye emergencies with confidence.
Contents
Introduction: General approach to patient with trauma -- Systemic management in orbital & adnexal emergencies -- Globe rupture -- Subluxated globes -- Exposure keratopathy due to absent or avulsed eyelids -- Periocular and adnexal injuries due to animal bites -- Chemical and thermal Injuries -- Endophthalmitis -- Eyelid trauma: general considerations -- Investigation of eyelid and lacrimal injuries -- Management of eyelid injuries -- Management of lacrimal system trauma -- Orbital Trauma: Mechanisms and investigations -- Types and management of orbital fractures -- Organic foreign bodies -- Inorganic foreign bodies -- Traumatic optic neuropathy -- Retro-bulbar hemorrhage: Etiology, pathogenesis, epidemiology and clinical perspectives -- Orbital compartment syndromes -- Orbital emphysema -- Iatrogenic visual loss after orbital and eyelid surgery -- General considerations and investigations for inflammatory orbital and eyelid disease -- Management of fulminant thyroid eye disease -- Orbital apex inflammation -- Pyoderma gangrenosum -- Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis and other muco-cutaneous syndromes -- Idiopathic orbital inflammatory disease -- Management of dysthyroid optic neuropathy -- Management of severe exposure keratopathy -- Acute medical management of non-thyroid orbital and eyelid inflammation -- Acute surgical management of non-thyroid orbital and lid inflammation -- General approach and algorithm for managing acute infections of the orbit and eyelid -- Diagnosis and treatment bacterial infections of the orbit -- Viral and fungal infections of the orbit -- Life-threatening infections -- Fulminant streptococcal infections and necrotizing fasciitis -- Viral keratitis -- Dacryoadenitis -- Dacryocystitis -- Canaliculitis and Intracanalicular foreign bodies -- General approach and algorithm for managing emergent neoplasms of the orbit and adnexa -- Primary orbital malignancies -- Secondary and metastatic tumors of the orbit -- Malignant transformation in benign orbital diseases -- Sebaceous gland carcinoma -- Squamous cell carcinoma -- Melanoma -- Merkel cell carcinoma (Cutaneous neuroendocrine carcinoma) -- Acute presentation of vascular lesions in the orbit -- Exposure keratopathy due to facial nerve palsy -- Complications of Botulinum toxin and facial fillers -- Iatrogenic orbital injury associated with adnexal intervention.

Abstract
This book focuses on the diagnostic impact of CT scans in severe abdominal trauma and in non-traumatic acute abdomen, the two clinical entities that constitute the main reasons for referrals for this imaging technique from the intensive care unit. The concept behind it is that emergency surgeons and physicians not only need the clinical knowledge to manage the different pathological conditions, but that they must also have a full understanding of diagnostic imaging modalities. To this end, each chapter includes a description of a specific acute abdominal disorder. In addition to the clinical presentation and the diagnosis and management guidelines, there is a special focus on imaging studies with clear and concise descriptions, high-quality images and the evolution grading scale to aid interpretation. This easy-to-read book is an ideal source of practical information for acute care surgeons, radiologists and for all the members of the emergency team.

Abstract
This book discusses all important aspects of emergency medicine in older people, identifying the particular care needs of this population, which all too often remain unmet. The up-to-date and in-depth coverage will assist emergency physicians in identifying patients at risk for adverse outcomes, in conducting appropriate assessment, and in providing timely and adequate care. Particular attention is paid to the commonpitfalls in emergency management andmeans of avoiding them. Between 1980 and 2013, the number of older patients in emergency departmentsworldwide doubled. Compared with younger patients, older people suffer from more comorbidities, a higher mortality rate, require more complex assessment and diagnostic testing, and tend to stay longer in the emergency department. This book, written by internationally recognized experts in emergency medicine and geriatrics, not only presents the state of the art in the care of this population but also underlines the increasing need for adequate training and development in the field.

Abstract
This book is an unparalleled resource on neurologic emergencies. Most books on neurologic emergencies focus on treatment of a disease after it is diagnosed (such as stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, or meningitis). There are but a few books that focus on how to evaluate the patient with a neurologic symptom, before the diagnosis is made. This is the area that frontline providers, including emergency physicians, family physicians, primary care physicians, hospitalists, urgent care physicians, and midlevel providers struggle with. This book is written by clinicians with a clear understanding of the needs of non-neurologists in the front lines of medicine. The editors are board-certified emergency physicians with fellowship training and expertise in neurologic emergencies. Neurologic Emergencies includes these point-of-care-friendly features: Extensive number of algorithms for distinct presenting symptoms; Classic neuroimaging findings; A concise bullet on what information needs to be conveyed to consultants; Reference to relevant national guidelines where applicable; Common chapter format to facilitate quick look-up.

Abstract
Ocular Emergency is a systematic, symptom based reference book for clinical practice guidance. This book aims to provide the most thorough knowledge and standard process to clinical practitioners, such as the nurses, medical students, residents, fellows and even ophthalmologists, to help them make the most appropriate decision on the management of patients who have suffered from urgent ocular conditions. The first three chapters provide the audiences general information of ocular emergency and the emergency room (ER), which will help them generate a clinical thinking. The following four chapters are symptom based discussion of common complaints of ocular emergency. These chapters contain almost all the symptoms the audiences will meet in the ER and covers hundreds of diseases the audiences may or may not think of which fits the symptom. They will help the readers to make the right diagnose and offer the best advice or treatment to the patients. The last two chapters provide the audiences the information of most urgent ocular traumas. For each disease, definition, etiology, clinical presentations and signs, treatment and typical clinical case with pictures or illustrative figures will be provided. In addition, each chapter will be provided with an algorithym(s) for differential diagnosis and treatment as a summary of the chapter.
