- Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) has emerged as an important treatment option for patients resuscitated from cardiac arrest as it provides significant protection from developing neurologic injury. Although hospitals and medical centres have become familiar with this intervention, it still remains greatly under-utilized due to a lack of experience and resources to deploy such a program safely and effectively. Therapeutic Hypothermia After Cardiac Arrest provides an evidence-based approach to identifying and managing cardiac arrest patients who are appropriate for TH. While each is a unique disaster, devastating events such as these are united both by their causes, and by the wide-ranging, and long-lasting health consequences that characterize their aftermath. Many of these consequences can be controlled or avoided.The Causes and Behavioral Consequences of Disasters brings a public health perspective to the fields of disaster preparedness and disaster response. Arguing that local context shapes the conditions for disasters, the authors study cases from the Cuzco, Peru, earthquake of 1950 to the Columbine school shooting to form the basis for a contextual model of disasters and population behavior following disasters. These models illustrate how the local context, careful pre-event planning, and coordinated post-event response strategies can minimize the initial damage and negative aftereffects of these events. This groundbreaking volume: Systematically reviews a half-century of disasters worldwide. Analyzes societal and environmental vulnerabilities and protective factors that can influence the course of disasters. Provides comprehensive models for causes of, and behavioral responses to, disasters, using in-depth examples from the U.S. and abroad. Recently, there has been an interest in the role that vitamin D plays in the inception and progression of lung disease. Vitamin D and the Lung: Mechanisms and Disease Associations delivers a concise, evidence-based review of the evidence for a role of vitamin D in various lung disorders. Divided into three sections, the first section of the book delivers a review of how vitamin D deficiency emerged in human populations, and gives a perspective on how humans evolved to maximize the efficiency of production of vitamin D. The second section of the book reviews aspects of vitamin D mechanisms on different immune cells, lung tissue, and genetics that have potential impact on lung disease. The third section follows with chapters on associations of vitamin D with the risk for viral infections, asthma and allergies, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, tuberculosis, and finally, lung cancer with an emphasis on ongoing research and clinical issues and needs for future research in each field. Additional skills are needed to respond effectively to the emergencies that arise from these developments, yet the available textbooks are mainly theoretical and provide limited practical advice and few methodological guidelines. This book, written by members of the core faculty responsible for European courses on Medical Response to Major Incidents (MRMI), is designed to redress the balance by providing a practical guide that covers the full range of disaster scenarios and is relevant to all medical staff. It combines within one comprehensive volume, in an easily accessible format, the entire spectrum of knowledge from command and coordination through to the management of individual casualties.
