When the kidneys are affected by some diseases, they do not work properly and can cause illness. The blood work, urine tests, and other tests such as ultrasound and renal scan can give the doctor a lot of information, but sometimes this is not enough to make the diagnosis, and a kidney biopsy is needed. - When the kidneys are affected by some diseases, they do not work properly and can cause illness. The blood work, urine tests, and other tests such as ultrasound and renal scan can give the doctor a lot of information, but sometimes this is not enough to make the diagnosis, and a kidney biopsy is needed. From the biopsy the doctors can learn what is causing the symptoms and if treatment is required. If treatment is required, the biopsy also allows the doctor to give some idea about how serious the problem is and what can be expected in the future.

The Hematology, Oncology and Nephrology service at the IWK recognizes that the journey of a life-threatening illness is a hard one, with many challenges and adjustments along the way. Because of this, the team has an ‘End of Treatment’ bell. The bell is there for children and youth to ring at milestone moments. Ringing the bell means that a child or youth has finished their course of treatment and is ready for the next chapter of their life.
