A spinal anesthetic is one type of anesthesia that can be used for a surgical procedure involving the lower portion of your body (hips and below). This pamphlet will help explain the process of a spinal anesthetic, if it is painful, how it is different from a general anesthetic, the benefits, the risks, and if you can still take pain medication after the procedure. It also explains what to expect once the spinal anesthetic wears off.
