Abstract
This book outlines the consensus findings of the ISAKOS Upper Extremity Committee regarding the treatment options for patients suffering from shoulder instability. The aim is to furnish readers with a precise knowledge of the presenting features of conditions typical of different ages, thereby facilitating assessment of patient characteristics and optimal treatment decision making based on the consensus of the Committee. All age groups are covered, from the very young through to the older patient. The structuring of the book essentially according to age group reflects the fact that certain forms of shoulder instability are observed at different ages. For example, while young patients tend to demonstrate instability combined with hyperlaxity, in later years, bony defects of the glenoid and humerus gain in importance. Similarly, the scope for conservative treatment varies across the life span. Each management-oriented chapter of the book includes information and guidance on anatomy, clinical examination, imaging, surgical indications and technique, rehabilitation, outcomes, and complications and their avoidance, and the text is supported by numerous high-quality illustrations.
Contents
Part I: The Young Patient with Shoulder Instability ( age < 20) -- 1. Overview of the Spectrum of Instability in the Very Young: Evolving Concepts -- 2. Classification of Glenohumeral Instability: A Proposed Modification of the FEDS System -- 3. Genetics of the Unstable Shoulder -- 4. Abstract
The book begins with a review of zoonotic pandemics of the past: the "Black Death" or bubonic plague of the Middle Ages, the Spanish Influenza pandemic (derived from avian influenza) of the early 20th century, to the more modern pandemic of AIDS/HIV infection, which originated in Africa from primates. However, the majority of chapters focus on more recent zoonoses, which have been recognized since the late 20th century to the present: SARS and MERS coronaviruses New avian influenza viruses The tick-borne Henan fever virus from China The tick-borne Heartland virus from the United States Recently recognized bacterial pathogens, such as Streptococcus suis from pigs. In addition, reemergence of established zoonoses that have expanded their niche are reviewed, such as the spread of Zika virus and Chikungunya virus to the Western Hemisphere, and the emergence and spread of Ebola virus infection in Africa. A chapter is also devoted to an overview of the mechanisms and various types of animals involved in the transmission of diseases to humans, and the potential means of control and prevention. Many endemic and sporadic diseases are still transmitted by animals, through either direct or indirect contact, and zoonoses are estimated to account for about 75% of all new and emerging infectious diseases. It is predicted by public health experts that the next major pandemic of infectious disease will be of animal origin, making Emerging Zoonoses: A Worldwide Perspective a crucial resource to all health care specialists by providing them with much needed information on these zoonotic diseases.
Contents
1. Pandemic zoonoses from the Middle-Ages to the 20th Century -- 2. Animals and mechanisms of disease transmission -- 3. Swine and avian influenza outbreaks in recent times -- 4. Emerging animal coronaviruses: first SARS and now MERS -- 5. Emergence of new tickborne infections -- 6. Chikungunya virus and Zika virus expansion: an imitation of Dengue virus -- 7. Ebola and Marburg: out of Africa -- 8. Hepatitis E: a zoonosis -- 9. Zoonotic malaria: plasmodium knowlesi -- 10. Zoonotic streptococci: a focus on Streptocccus suis -- 11. Abstract
A fundamental issue facing the global community is meeting the challenges of population aging and achieving healthy aging to maintain an active older population and reduce the number of disabled people. The focus of this book is on theoretical issues and empirical findings related to trends and determinants of healthy aging, including factors related to "healthy longevity" of the oldest-old, aged 80 and over. The group is the most rapidly increasing elderly sub-population and is most likely to need assistance in daily living in all countries. Chapters include both longitudinal and cross-sectional data from North America, Europe, and Asia in country-specific studies and cross-national comparisons. Part I focuses on the definition, components, concepts, measurements, and determinants of healthy aging, and discusses the trends and patterns of disability and healthy life expectancy at the macro level. Part II addresses individual healthy aging, including its biological and socio-demographic aspects. Abstract
How long can humans live? This open access book documents, verifies and brings to life the advance of the frontier of human survival. It carefully validates data on supercentenarians, aged 110+, and semi-supercentenarians, aged 105-109, stored in the International Database on Longevity (IDL). The chapters in this book contribute substantial advances in rigorously checked facts about exceptional lifespans and in the application of state-of-the-art analytical strategies to understand trends and patterns in these rare lifespans. The book includes detailed accounts of extreme long-livers and how their long lifespans were documented, as well as reports on the causes of death at the oldest ages. Its key finding, based on the analysis of 1,219 validated supercentenarians, is that the annual probability of death is constant at 50% after age 110. In contrast to previous assertions about a ceiling on the human lifespan, evidence presented in this book suggests that lifespan records in specific countries and globally will be broken again and again as more people survive to become supercentenarians.

Abstract
This SpringerBrief provides an update on endometriosis research -- from the underlying mechanisms, predisposing factors, role of environmental pollutants, treatment options, impact on quality of life, and biomarkers, to emerging treatment modalities in order to help clinicians to pursue a patient-centered approach in managing the disease. This book provides clinicians with a better insight into early diagnosis and management of endometriosis. It explores the possible identification of proteins in different types of endometriosis diseases and at different stages of the progression. This may aid in the discovery of potential biomarkers for non-invasive diagnosis of these diseases. The ability to identify a protein, common between women of different races, ages and in different regions of the world will hopefully contribute to improving women's health worldwide.
Contents
Introduction to endometriosis -- Predisposing and protective factors of endometriosis -- Theories on endometriosis -- Oxidative stress and endometriosis -- Role of iron in the pathogenesis of endometriosis -- Role of environmental pollutants in endometriosis -- Endometriosis and ovarian cancer -- Endometriosis: impact on patient quality of life -- Diagnosis of endometriosis -- Management of endometriosis -- Concluding remarks.

Abstract
This concise, clinically focused handbook offers a complete overview of tuberculosis and reviews the latest guidelines, treatment options, clinical trials and management of this disease. Handbook of Tuberculosis is a well-rounded book written by renowned researchers at the Johns Hopkins Center for Tuberculosis Research. The easily accessible text offers infectious disease specialists, pulmonologists, and other healthcare workers an excellent quick reference tool, with full color tables and figures enhancing the text further. Tuberculosis is a life-threatening lung infection that affects people of all ages. It is the second biggest cause of death from infectious diseases and is the most common cause of death amongst patients with HIV/AIDS. Education on the recognition of tuberculosis and the subsequent treatment of the disease is empirical to the prevention of wide-spread resistance. There is a lack of knowledge on how to treat coinfected and comorbid patients, this handbook offers the latest medical guidance and treatment options to equip physicians to manage such patients.
Contents
Overview of tuberculosis -- Pathology and clinical features of pulmonary tuberculosis: primary infection and progressive pulmonary tuberculosis -- Treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis -- Extrapulmonary tuberculosis -- Public health issues -- Management of pulmonary tuberculosis in special populations -- Emerging therapies -- Conclusions and future directions.

Abstract
Inflammatory breast cancer is a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer that occurs in women of all ages, and, rarely, in men. Variable disease presentation means that this disease is often undetected and patients with this diagnosis have a poor prognosis. Inflammatory Breast Cancer brings together the existing clinical information on inflammatory breast cancer. The content covers epidemiology, risk factors, diagnosis, histopathology and staging, therapy and management of patients with this disease. Recent advances in therapy have improved the prognosis of this type of cancer considerably, making this text a timely addition to the literature. This book is an essential tool for medical, surgical and clinical oncologists specialising in breast cancer, who will inevitably encounter this rare but pernicious disease.
