Abstract
This comprehensive, up-to-date text, which brings together the key practical elements of the rapidly evolving field of sperm DNA and chromatin abnormalities, is divided thematically into five main sections. Part I discusses human sperm chromatin structure and nuclear architecture, while part II presents laboratory evaluation of sperm DNA damage, including SCSA, SCD, TUNEL and Comet assays, and cytochemical tests. Biological and clinical factors in the etiology of sperm DNA damage are discussed in part III, including oxidative stress, abortive apoptosis, cancer, and environmental and lifestyle factors. Part IV presents clinical studies on the utility of sperm DNA damage tests, both with natural and ART-assisted pregnancies, and debates the clinical utility of such tests. Finally, part V discusses current treatment options, such as antioxidant therapy, varicocelectomy, advanced sperm processing techniques and the use of testicular sperm. We are now beginning to better understand the unique organization of the sperm chromatin, as well as the nature and etiology of sperm DNA damage. Abstract
Superficial radiation has been utilized by dermatologists for skin cancer and inflammatory diseases since the early 1900s. This textbook is the progeny of multiple previous editors from 1926 on dedicated to its safe and effective usage of radiation therapy. The rapid advancements in the field of Radiation Oncology, including electron beam therapy and tomotherapy, alongside the introduction of corticosteroids for dermatologic disorders and advancement in cutaneous surgery, have until recently eclipsed the utilization of this safe and effective modality. Abstract
In this book, leaders in the field explore our current understanding of thrombosis and hemostasis in cancer and address key questions on the subject. Among the topics discussed are the mechanisms that cancers use to activate the coagulation system, and those by means of which an activated coagulation system can lead to more aggressive cancer growth. Clinical chapters examine the role of thrombosis prophylaxis and treatment, central line-associated thrombosis, and cancer-associated hemorrhage. Subsequent chapters deal with the management of chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia, anticoagulation in the presence of brain metastases, and other unique challenges in the interaction of thrombosis and hemostasis in cancer. It has been 150 years since Armand Trousseau first described the well-known association between cancer and an increased risk of thrombosis, which may be considered the first paraneoplastic syndrome ever identified. More recently, numerous studies have indicated that activation of the coagulation system by cancer not only increases the likelihood of thrombosis, but is also associated with a more aggressive cancer phenotype. By familiarizing readers with the latest developments in this complex and challenging field, the book offers a valuable resource for scientists and clinicians alike.
