Abstract
Worldwide, infectious disease remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality. In developing countries, infection accounts for a substantial proportion of all recorded deaths. Likewise, in developed countries, pneumonia alone results in a large number of deaths. Along with bacteria, parasites and rickettsial organisms, viruses are responsible for many of the infections afflicting the human host. In the past decade alone, viruses that primarily target the lung have caused major respiratory illnesses including outbreaks of severe adult respiratory distress syndrome (SARS) and H1N1 influenza. This book is distinctive in that the entire spectrum of viral disease of the lung is conveniently compiled within a single volume. The epidemiologic, ultrastructural, immunologic, clinical and histopathologic features of well-known viral pathogens and newer emergent infectious agents are discussed. The book is organized in a classic fashion, starting with introductory material and sections on lung defenses and the taxonomic classification of pneumotropic viruses. The various acute viral pneumonias are then considered in a standard format in the main body of the book. Subsequent sections are devoted to the human immunodeficiency virus, viral lung disease in children and other viral-linked tumoral and nontumoral lung conditions. A chapter is also included on animal lung diseases caused by viruses. The text is supplemented by numerous color images.

Abstract
This book is intended for medical students and surgical trainees such as surgical residents and fellows. It provides a practical preparation guide for common surgical procedures. Operations are divided into twelve sections that cover commonly performed general surgery operations such as bariatric, breast, cardiothoracic, colorectal, minimally invasive, and more. The chapters included in these sections aim to assist residents and fellows in facilitating memorization of the operation sequence and movements required to perform a given task. It will also help enhance skill development in the operating room. Written by residents and highly experienced attending surgeons, Mental Conditioning to Perform Common Operations in General Surgery Training: A Systematic Approach to Expediting Skill Acquisition and Maintaining Dexterity in Performance provides a comprehensive systematic approach to performing surgical procedures.

Abstract
Echocardiography has become an invaluable tool in intensive care medicine because of its ease of use and instantaneous provision of precise information on cardiovascular functional anatomy at the bedside. This book contains all the information that readers will require in order to perform echocardiography and lung ultrasound, and to interpret the findings correctly, permitting optimal guidance of the hemodynamic management of unstable patients. Furthermore, lung ultrasound is dealt with for both diagnosis and treatment of respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation. After an introductory chapter on the essential physics of ultrasonography, standard echocardiographic examination via both the transthoracic and the transesophageal approach is described. In the third section, the functional anatomy of all normal and pathologic thoracic structures as observed on echocardiography is presented in detail. A wide range of basic and advanced applications of echocardiography in the emergency and intensive care setting are then described. A final supplementary section considers further applications of ultrasound in the intensive care unit, such as ultrasound-guided vein cannulation, Doppler renal evaluation, transcranial Doppler, and lung and pleural ultrasound. This superbly illustrated book has been specifically designed to meet the needs of all intensivists, emergency physicians, and anesthesiologists who intend to use ultrasound extensively to guide optimal management of the critically ill.

Abstract
The second edition of this superbly illustrated book equips practitioners with all the information that they will require in order to perform echocardiography appropriately and to interpret findings correctly. After clear exposition of fundamentals of the examination technique via both the transthoracic and the transesophageal approach, the functional anatomy of all normal and pathologic thoracic structures as observed on echocardiography is presented in detail. A wide range of basic and advanced applications of echocardiography in the emergency, perioperative, and intensive care settings are then described. A final supplementary section considers further applications of ultrasound in the ICU, such as in patients with respiratory failure, trauma, or venous thrombosis. This edition has been extensively revised and updated and includes entirely new chapters on various techniques and applications. It will be a tremendous aid to current best practice for all intensivists, emergency physicians, and anesthesiologists who intend to use echocardiography and ultrasound for diagnosis and guidance of optimal management in the critically ill.
