Abstract
Few diseases have made more difference to our understanding of illness, the relation of the patient to the physician and other health care professionals, and the social context of disease than breast cancer. Breast cancer activism has provided a model of public policy advocacy for women, as well as for sufferers from other diseases, and even in causes unrelated to health. In many ways it has become emblematic of issues in women's health. This volume offers a discursive analysis of breast cancer. From multiple perspectives--historical, philosophical, psychological, socio-political--these essays explore the competing narratives that have made breast cancer a contested site. It addresses debates about the autonomy of the patient in relation to the authority of the physician, as well as the importance of patient narratives in understanding disease. It analyzes the relation between the community and medical practice, particularly with regard to the effect of breast cancer activists and feminists on the medical understanding and treatment of breast cancer. And, it questions the intersection of medical science with political institutions and agencies of public policy in determining priorities of research and strategies of treatment.

Abstract
Problem Solving in Endodontics, 5th Edition, by James L. Gutmann and Paul Lovdahl, offers updated techniques and an evidence-based approach to the most common procedures performed at chairside. Ideal for both endodontists and general dentists, this thoroughly revised reference combines the precision of quality endodontic care with achievable and pain-free outcomes for the patient. Each chapter has been carefully designed so that you'll quickly grasp the anatomy, the instruments needed, and what procedures should be performed -- all supplemented by boxed clinical case examples and tips. Going beyond problem solving, it also addresses the major issues in diagnostic, anatomic, restorative, periodontic, traumatic, and surgical aspects of tooth retention. Provides chairside guidance for the endodontic procedures most commonly performed by endodontists and general dentists. Entire text has expanded concepts that are verified in new drawings and clinically relevant cases. Integrates new technologies and materials into every chapter that when applied result in predictable and optimal outcomes. Establishes clear parameters for the retention of teeth. Correlates optimal patient outcomes with an evidence-based approach. Reflects the practical expertise of renowned endodontics authority and past President of the AAE, Dr. James Gutmann, and endodontics specialist, Dr. Paul Lovdahl

Abstract
Social psychiatry is a multidisciplinary field that analyzes mechanisms of mental health issues comprehensively to contribute to society using the findings. These findings include biological, psychological, and social aspects and are based on psychiatry and connected with a wide variety of academic fields, including psychology, sociology, law, economics, and religious studies. Epidemiological research in psychiatry is a field of study in patients with psychiatric disorders that investigates causes in order to develop clinical applications of the results, and to create applications to health services plans for individuals and/or communities. Written by a leading authority on social psychiatry and psychiatric epidemiology who has been residing in Nagasaki for most of his life, and also worked as a head of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Mental Health, it describes not only outstanding epidemiological studies and mental support reports for atomic bomb sufferers but also international collaborative projects on schizophrenia, affective disorders, and common mental disorders. This book provides a valuable resource not only for physicians and researchers in the field of psychiatry and mental health but for all those who work in the field of mental health.

Abstract
Ultrasound guidance of liver surgery is a very sophisticated approach that permits the performance of otherwise unfeasible operations, discloses the true extent of tumors, increases the indications for hepatectomy, and renders surgery safer. Despite this, it has remained relatively neglected in the literature over the past two decades, during which time much progress has been achieved. This is the first atlas on the subject, and it is comprehensive in scope. The state of the art in the use of ultrasound for resection guidance is carefully documented, and new techniques for exploration of the biliary tract and facilitation of transplant surgery are presented. Further important topics include the role of ultrasound in laparoscopic approaches, the use of contrast agents for diagnosis and staging, and developments in the planning of surgical strategy. The editor is a leading authority whose group has been responsible for a variety of advances in the field. He has brought together other experts whose aim throughout is to provide clear information and guidance on the optimal use of ultrasound when performing liver surgery. This atlas is intended especially for hepatobiliary surgeons but will also be of considerable value for general surgeons.

Abstract
This book explains the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an institution and provides understanding of its nomenclature, societal role, policies, goals and challenges. While many readers will have some knowledge of the FDA, few have an appreciation of the many specific areas of FDA authority. For example, how many realize that the US is one of only two countries which allow direct-to-consumer drug advertising, which is regulated by FDA? Or that FDA itself advertises to try to prevent young people from smoking cigarettes, and that all proprietary drug names must be approved by FDA? How many doctors or other readers are familiar with the formal definition distinguishing drugs from devices and the importance this has for development costs and for our knowledge about the ultimate products? How many know how much nutritional supplements are regulated by FDA? The FDA for Doctors is not for those looking for detailed instruction on dealing with the FDA or its operations. Rather, it is written by a doctor with doctors in mind, with the hope that the information in this book will make physicians, and other readers, more thoughtful and insightful, especially with regards to therapeutics and the many broad societal issues underlying FDA's activities. With over 40 years of experience as a clinical investigator in many trials done for FDA registration, the author has been a member of and chaired an FDA advisory committee, and has been a consultant to several divisions of the FDA. He has also had the opportunity to serve on the U.S. Senate Labor Committee, helping with its FDA oversight activities. In addition to a long academic medical career the author has been a consultant to and a full time employee of drug and device companies.

Abstract
This book argues that in order to be truly effective, public health must embrace a group of reasoning strategies that have traditionally been characterized as informal fallacies. It will be demonstrated that these strategies can facilitate judgements about complex public health issues in contexts of uncertainty. The book explains how scientists and lay people routinely resort to the use of these strategies during consideration of public health problems. Although these strategies are not deductively valid, they are nevertheless rationally warranted procedures. Public health professionals must have a sound understanding of these cognitive strategies in order to engage the public and achieve their public health goals. The book draws upon public health issues as wide ranging as infectious diseases, food safety and the potential impact on human health of new technologies. It examines reasoning in the context of these issues within a large-scale, questionnaire-based survey of nearly 900 members of the public in the UK. In addition, several philosophical themes run throughout the book, including the nature of uncertainty, scientific knowledge and inquiry. The complexity of many public health problems demands an approach to reasoning that cannot be accommodated satisfactorily within a general thinking skills framework. This book shows that by developing an awareness of these reasoning strategies, scientists and members of the public can have a more productive engagement with public health problems.

Abstract
This compelling title is a comprehensive, practical guide for current and aspiring leaders in academic medical centers (AMC). Offering both a broad overview of the dynamics of the AMC and a detailed "how-to" set of instructions for the wide-ranging situations that demand skilled leadership, this expertly designed volume is filled with meaningful examples and insights. Learning to Lead in the Academic Medical Center: A Practical Guide consists of five parts. The first three sections are narrative and intended to help the reader become a better leader. The first section looks at the AMC as a social system and emphasizes an understanding of group dynamics. The second section discusses the critical role of personality, while the third covers all the necessary leadership skill sets such as negotiation, persuasion, conflict resolution, running a meeting, and so on. The fourth section is a fascinating series of case vignettes to solve based on the material that preceded it. The final section provides a set of highly instructional solutions to those cases. An indispensable reference authored by three highly accomplished leaders in the field, Learning to Lead in the Academic Medical Center: A Practical Guide will be of great interest to all physicians and trainees who seek a comprehensive yet handy resource on the need-to-know basics of success in the AMC environment.

Abstract
This ground breaking title presents the many different neurologic syndromes and vastly expanding data in the brain sciences from an evolutionary, or neuro-archeological, perspective, as well as a clinical one. The neuro-archeological perspective offers a more thorough picture of the field--providing hindsight that leads to great insight and foresight. It thus provides the reader with the core foundational aspects of many perplexing neurologic syndromes. Authored by a noted authority in cognitive neurology and including ample tables, diagrams and images, the book covers the full range of behavioral neurological, psychological and neuropsychiatric syndromes, as well as their underlying disease states, relevant neuropsychological tests and contemporary neuroimaging, both structural and functional. The evolutionary approach offers a comprehensive, novel, and completely updated overview of each topic. An invaluable title unlike any other in the field, Cognitive, Conative and Behavioral Neurology: An Evolutionary Perspective is a landmark resource and will be of great interest to neurologists, psychiatrists, neuroscientists, and trainees in all fields.

Abstract
From epidemiology and pathogenesis to disease management, this book reviews our current understanding of and provides up-to-date information of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). A subtype of Idiopathic Interstitial Pneumonias (IIP), IPF is one of the most elusive and intractable respiratory disease to date and its triggering factors remain unclear. However, new developments such as serum markers that are highly specific to IPF (i.e. KL-6, SP-A, and SP-D), the establishment of systematic diagnostic imaging (HRCT) and accumulated reports of treatment using an antifibrotic agent (pirfenidone) are slowly improving our understanding of the disease. Edited by an established authority in the field and written by experts, this book will be valuable to not only to beginning learners but also to physicians, instructors and researchers whose work involves IIPs. With each chapter exploring critical questions, with unresolved issues and future prospects, the book offers a valuable resource for understanding issues such as the newly proposed entity of interstitial pneumonia with emphysema (combined pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema: CPFE) and the mechanism of how so many IIP sufferers develop lung cancer.
Contents
Part I. Definition, Epidemiology, and Pathogenesis -- 1. Definition of IPF -- 2. Epidemiology and Risk Factors of IPF -- 3. Acute Exacerbation of IPF -- 4. Pathogenesis of IPF -- Part II. Diagnosis -- .5 Specific Serum Markers of IPF -- 6. High-Resolution Computed Tomography of Honeycombing and IPF/UIP -- 7. Pathology of IPF -- 8. Differential Diagnosis of IPF -- Part III. Management and Prognosis -- 9. Pharmacotherapy of IPF Using Antifibrotic Compounds -- 10. Pharmacotherapy of IPF (Corticosteroids, Immunosuppressants, Etc.) -- 11.
