Abstract
The perfect execution of a minimally invasive operative technique is only part of the equation for ensuring a favorable surgical outcome. It is also essential to have a complete understanding of the entire spectrum of perioperative care, including preoperative evaluation, technique selection, and postoperative management. Further, it is important to understand the physiologic impact of the C02 pneumoperitoneum. The SAGES Manual of Perioperative Care in Minimally Invasive Surgery provides strategies for successful patient management before, during and after laparoscopic surgery. This easy-to-read manual includes comprehensive and authoritative coverage of perioperative concepts and strategies that not only optimize outcomes but also ensures quality patient care beyond the operating room: guidelines for preoperative evaluation of healthy and complex patients strategies for successful outcomes, including OR setup, patient positioning, anesthetic considerations, exposure technique, port closure method, and hernia prevention multiple port arrangements for most operations and port placement schemes that take into account the B.M.I. of the patient managing trocar placement-related bleeding, prophylaxis against DVT, prevention of intraoperative hypothermia and subcutaneous emphysema when to convert to an open procedure physiologic, immunologic, and oncologic implications of CO2 pneumoperitoneum, prevention of port-site tumors, minimizing the risk of gas embolism postoperative considerations including fluid replacement, ambulation and early postoperative performance criteria The SAGES Manual of Perioperative Care in Minimally Invasive Surgery is written by recognized experts and reflects the Society's commitment to surgical education.

Abstract
The translation of new molecular understanding of disease into clinical practice in gastroenterology is a special challenge. The Falk Symposium No. 160, entitled "Pathogenesis and Clinical Practice in Gastroenterology", held 15-16 June 2007 in Portorož, Slovenia, provided a stimulating framework to bridge discussions from bench to bedside. The proceedings of the symposium are contained in this book, and the unifying theme is the growing understanding of inflammation as a driving force in chronic disease leading to disability and malignancy. Aspects of early detection--endoscopically or via molecular markers--are covered as well as in-depth discussions of the validation of new findings in clinical practice. Whilst on a molecular basis gastroenterologists and hepatologists try to shed light on the same intracellular pathways, clinical implications such as surveillance of cancer in IBD or chronic hepatitis with cirrhosis have to be tailored to specific needs. New therapeutic agents--approved or on the horizon of early clinical studies--will dramatically change the options of patients with chronic disease such as Crohn's disease, viral hepatitis or hepatocellular carcinoma.

Abstract
This updated and revised edition of the classic bedside pocket reference remains the gold standard in critical care medicine. The new edition maintains Dr. Marik's trademark humor and engaging writing style, while adding numerous references to make this book the most current and thorough treatment of evidence-based critical care available. The handbook enables the clinician to find the evidence to support or refute an intervention and to help choose the most appropriate, cost-effective treatment. The analysis of treatment strategies is presented by organ system, and the handbook also covers miscellaneous ICU topics (such as sedation, toxicology, radiology, and sepsis) based on the most frequently found and difficult to solve problems in ICU patient management.

Abstract
As aging trends in the United States and Europe in particular are strongly suggestive of increasingly older society, it would be prudent for health care providers to better prepare for such changes. By including physiology, disease, nutrition, pharmacology, pathology, radiology and other relevant associated topics, Geriatric Gastroenterology fills the void in the literature for a volume devoted specifically to gastrointestinal illness in the elderly. This unique volume includes provision of training for current and future generations of physicians to deal with the health problems of older adults. It will also serve as a comprehensive guide to practicing physicians for ease of reference. Relevant to the geriatric age group, the volume covers epidemiology, physiology of aging, gastrointestinal physiology, pharmacology, radiology, pathology, motility disorders, luminal disorders, hepato-biliary disease, systemic manifestations, neoplastic disorders, gastrointestinal bleeding, cancer and medication related interactions and adverse events, all extremely common in older adults; these are often hard to evaluate and judge, especially considering the complex aging physiology. All have become important components of modern medicine. Special emphasis is be given to nutrition and related disorders. Capsule endoscopy and its utility in the geriatric population is also covered. Presented in simple, easy to read style, the volume includes numerous tables, figures and key points enabling ease of understanding. Chapters on imaging and pathology are profusely illustrated. All chapters are written by specialists and include up to date scientific information. Geriatric Gastroenterology is of great utility to residents in internal medicine, fellows in gastroenterology and geriatric medicine as well as gastroenterologists, geriatricians and practicing physicians including primary care physicians caring for older adults.

Abstract
Biomaterials for Surgical Operation offers a review of the latest advances made in developing bioabsorbable devices for surgical operations which include surgical adhesives (sealants), barriers for the prevention of tissue adhesion, polymers for fractured bone fixation, growth factors for the promotion of wound healing, and sutures. Over the years, many descriptions of biomaterials have appeared in academic journals and books, but most of them have been devoted to limited clinical areas. This is in marked contrast with this volume which covers a wide range of bioabsorbable devices used in surgery from a practical point of view. The currently applied polymeric devices are critical in surgery, but all involve serious problems due to their poor performance. For instance, fibrin glue, the most widely used surgical sealant, can produce only a weak gel with low adhesive strength to tissues, accentuating the limited effectiveness of current treatment options. Likewise, the currently available barrier membranes cannot fully prevent tissue adhesion at the acceptable level and are, moreover, not easy to handle with endoscopes due to their poor mechanical properties. Biomaterials for Surgical Operation is aimed at those who are interested in expanding their knowledge of how the problems associated with the currently used devices for surgical operation can be solved. It primarily focuses on the absorbable biomaterials which are the main components of these medical devices.

Surgery needs skill. Skill needs knowledge. Knowledge of tricks, moves, and tools. This book is about such knowledge. Expert authors have contributed technical pearls, gained by years of experience. The short "how-I-do-it" chapters offer the reader a quick and effective guide that will be invaluable when addressing any penetrating injury. The book is not intended to serve as a comprehensive volume of pathophysiology and management in trauma; rather the goal is to provide practical solutions on how to treat injuries surgically. It describes the steps that you must take when, in the middle of the night, confronted with devastating bleeding, you will have only one chance to save a life!

Abstract
The volume is authored by a colorectal surgeon with long-standing clinical and scientific experience and is devoted to the management of complications following surgery of the anorectum and the pelvic floor. It is aimed not only at general surgeons, perineologists and, of course, proctologists, but also at gastroenterologists, endoscopists, radiologists and physiotherapists, i.e. those who may be involved in both diagnosis and cure whenever an adverse event, either unpredictable or potentially preventable, causes an intra- or postoperative, early or late, mild or life-threatening complication. Severe bleeding, dehiscence, perforation, anorectal stricture, fecal incontinence, and even caval vein thrombosis, fatal Fournier gangrene and pneumomediastinum may occur after anal surgery. The incidence, pathogenesis prevention and treatment of such events are discussed in detail in 10 chapters with 30 tables, 200 illustrations and more than 1000 references. Both conventional procedures and recent innovations are reported. "Unforgettable clinical cases (complications with litigation)" and "Tips and Tricks" are sections increasing the appeal of this book. The approach is "evidence-based" and holistic, focusing on anorectal problems while taking into consideration whole body-mental unity'showing, for example, that a non-healing perineal wound may be due to hypo-pituitarism, and failure after a re-intervention may be related to psychological distress.
