Abstract
In Vivo Models of Inflammation provides the biomedical researcher in both the pharmaceutical industry and academia with a description of the state of the art animal model systems used to emulate diseases with components of inflammation. This second edition acts as a complement to the first edition by describing and updating the standard models that are most utilized for specific disease areas. In addition, new models are included exploring emerging areas of inflammation research. The format is designed with the laboratory in mind: Both volumes provide detailed descriptions of the methodologies and uses of the most significant models. This includes current information regarding agents that demonstrate efficacy, those that do not and those that can be used as standard controls. The focus remains on those models that serve as pre-clinical correlates to human disease as well as those that represent components of the inflammatory response. Pioneering ideas and provocative comments about future directions are meant to challenge the status quo and stimulate new thinking. Therefore, new approaches to the development of future models in selected therapeutic areas have been highlighted. The focus on novel technologies that are vital for innovative in vivo research has been expanded to include chapters on the use of transgenic and gene transfer technologies, nanotechnology, and stem cells. This up-to-date reference manual helps to select the best animal model for a specific question. At the same time, this set of books continues to acknowledge the solemn responsibility in vivo research carries with it and extends the coverage of animal respect and welfare when used in experimental settings. Chapters describing current regulations in the United States, United Kingdom, and Japan address these concerns. Thus, the ultimate aim of this set of books is to provide current best practices for obtaining the maximum information from in vivo experimentation, while preserving the dignity and comfort of the animal.

Abstract
When Puberity is Precocious: Scientific and Clinical Aspects provides a unique continuum of expertise, looking at puberty from anthropologic, epidemiologic, clinical, and molecular perspectives. The volume addresses broad pubertal changes in the general population while at the same time providing in depth information about specific disorders of puberty and the latest management changes. The text is divided into seven parts. The first is an in-depth investigation into neuroendocrine control of puberty, the second looks at secular trends and the onset of puberty, and the third provides an examination into isolated breast development. The fourth section covers adrenal abnormalities and puberty, the next two sections include chapters on gonadotropinÇÖs effects, and the final section is a looks at environmental effects on puberty. Comprehensive and timely, When Puberity is Precocious: Scientific and Clinical Aspects will become an essential reference for endocrinologists and internists with an interest in precocious puberty.

Abstract
Pope John Paul II surprised much of the medical world in 2004 with his strongly worded statement insisting that patients in a persistent vegetative state should be provided with nutrition and hydration. While many Catholic bioethicists defended the Pope's claim that the life of all human beings, even those in a persistent vegetative state or a coma, was worth protecting, others argued that the Pope's position marked a shift from the traditional Catholic teaching on the withdrawal of medical treatment at the end of life. The debate among Catholic bioethicists over the Pope's statement only grew more intense during the controversy surrounding Terry Schiavo's death in 2005, as bioethicists on both sides of the debate argued about the legitimacy of removing her feeding tubes. This collection of essays by some of the most prominent Catholic bioethicists addresses the Pope's statements, the moral issues surrounding artificial feeding and hydration, the refusal of treatment, and the ethics of care for those at the end of life.

Abstract
Ocular Disease-a newly introduced companion volume to the classic Adlers Physiology of the Eye-correlates basic science and clinical management to describe the how and why of eye disease processes and the related best management protocols. Editors Leonard A. Levin and Daniel M. Albert-two of the world's leading ophthalmic clinician-scientists-have recruited as contributors the most expert and experienced authorities available in each of the major areas of ophthalmic disease specific to ophthalmology: retina, cornea, cataract, glaucoma, uveitis, and more. The concise chapter structure features liberal use of color-with 330 full-color line artworks, call-out boxes, summaries, and schematics for easy navigation and understanding. In print and online at expertconsult.com, this comprehensive resource provides you with a better and more practical understanding of the science behind eye disease and its relation to treatment. Includes access to the fully searchable text online at expertconsult.com, along with images and references. Covers all areas of disease in ophthalmology including retina, cornea, cataract, glaucoma, and uveitis for the comprehensive information you need for managing clinical cases. Presents a unique and pragmatic blend of necessary basic science and clinical application to serve as a clinical guide to understanding the cause and rational management of ocular disease
