Abstract
This book provides a broad international perspective on the psychological trauma faced by children and adolescents exposed to major disasters, and on the local public health response to their needs. An outstanding quality of the book is that it draws upon the experience of local researchers, clinicians, and public mental health practitioners who dedicated themselves to these children in the wake of overwhelming events. The chapters address exemplary responses to a wide variety of trauma types, including severe weather, war, industrial catastrophes, earthquakes, and terrorism. Because disasters do not recognize geographic, economic, or political boundaries, the chapters have been selected to reflect the diverse global community’s attempt to respond to vulnerable children in the most challenging times. The book, thus, examines a diverse range of healthcare systems, cultural settings, mental health infrastructure, government policies, and the economic factors that have played an important role in responses to traumatic events. The ultimate goal of this book is to stimulate future international collaborations and interventions that will promote children’s mental health in the face of disaster.

Abstract
The World Trade Center attacks. A typhoid outbreak in Eastern Europe. Hurricane Katrina. While each is a unique disaster, devastating events such as these are united both by their causes, and by the wide-ranging, and long-lasting health consequences that characterize their aftermath. Many of these consequences can be controlled or avoided. The Causes and Behavioral Consequences of Disasters brings a public health perspective to the fields of disaster preparedness and disaster response. Arguing that local context shapes the conditions for disasters, the authors study cases from the Cuzco, Peru, earthquake of 1950 to the Columbine school shooting to form the basis for a contextual model of disasters and population behavior following disasters. These models illustrate how the local context, careful pre-event planning, and coordinated post-event response strategies can minimize the initial damage and negative aftereffects of these events. This groundbreaking volume: Systematically reviews a half-century of disasters worldwide. Analyzes societal and environmental vulnerabilities and protective factors that can influence the course of disasters. Provides comprehensive models for causes of, and behavioral responses to, disasters, using in-depth examples from the U.S. and abroad. Applies both models to the World Trade Center attacks, with implications for the public health field. The Causes and Behavioral Consequences of Disasters will further professional discussion and understanding among a wide range of professionals and students across public health, mental health, education, health administration and policy, social work, and the social sciences.

Abstract
This book focuses on mental health issues arising in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Three years after the 11 March 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, tsunamis, and Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident, roughly 130,000 individuals continue to face enormous burdens as a result of mandatory evacuation. Many evacuees still live in temporary housing, and returning home remains a distant dream as they wait for the decontamination of the danger zone to be completed. However, the plant recovery process is still evolving, and the complete cleanup will take decades. Beyond all of these hardships, many evacuees are also mourning the loss of their loved ones. The compound disaster with its many uncertainties poses and will continue to pose serious emotional and social challenges. People affected by the nuclear disaster have been facing serious psychological challenges from ongoing fear of radiation exposure. Furthermore, there is continuing debate between various stakeholders on the options for disaster responses. This situation in turn produces adverse public responses, such as discrimination and stigmatization of the evacuees and scapegoating of the authorities and nuclear plant workers. Mental Health and Social Issues Following a Nuclear Accident addresses these issues and their impacts, pursuing both evidence-based and narrative-based approaches. It also contrasts the Fukushima findings with those of other nuclear disasters, namely, Three Mile Island and Chernobyl.
Contents
1. Godzilla mon amour: the Origins and Legacy of Nuclear Fear in Japan -- 2. Unforeseeable Accidents from the Point of View of the Legal System -- 3. Report on Fukushima Counseling Support Professional Team: Interdisciplinary Team Approach for Psychosocial Care of Evacuees -- 4. Societal and Ethical Aspects of Radiation Risk Perception -- 5. Thinking Across Disaster -- 6. Emotional Consequences of TMI and Chernobyl: Lessons Learned for Fukushima -- 7. 3/11 and 9/11: A Multi-faceted Investigation of a Survivor Exchange Program -- 8. Psychosocial Responses to Disaster and Exposures: Distress Reactions, Health Risk Behavior, and Mental Disorders -- 9. Psychosocial Challenges of the Fukushima Nuclear Plant Workers.

Abstract
This unique title richly tells the stories of partnership and collaboration. The narrative voice of each chapter derives from the people who tell their story -- immigrants, survivors of torture, mental health experts, urban people, rural people, teachers, doctors, attorneys, students, and international leaders. These authors provide emotionally powerful tales that move, affect, and encourage readers. The collection of narratives is inspired by these individuals, who believe that collaboration can bring authentic mutualism, promise-keeping, and innovation to address the hardest problems we face as a world community. Partnerships for Mental Health: Narratives of Community and Academic Collaboration is about the stories of innovation and collaboration occurring between community and academic partners who have undertaken among the very hardest of problems, such as the care of veterans with ravaging posttraumatic stress disorder; the care of homeless individuals with HIV, addiction, and mental illness; the care of caregivers for Hispanic family members with Alzheimer's disease; the prevention of illness in impoverished vulnerable youth; and the rescue of profoundly mentally ill earthquake survivors. In addition, this title not only also tells the story of identity formation of early-career physicians with a calling to work with distinct populations for whom suffering and stigma are immense, but also the stories of the special bonds that develop and are strengthened between community members and academic colleagues and, ultimately, between friends. A truly indispensable contribution to the literature, this captivating and novel title illustrates and inspires collaboration in order to bring about better health outcomes for people affected by mental health issues in communities throughout the world.

This book documents how nurses have shown their dedication, courage, expertise and compassion in helping communities prepare for, respond to and recover from disastrous events. It aims to inspire and equip nurses and other health professionals to help people in disaster-affected areas and contribute to community resilience. The last decade (2005-2015) has been characterized by a number of overwhelming natural disasters - tropical storms, floods, earthquakes, tsunamis; and threats of emerging infectious diseases - SARS, MERSCoV and Ebola around the world. Countries from the Asia Pacific region, such as Australia, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, India, Japan, Nepal, Philippines, Solomon Islands, South Korea, Thailand and Vanuatu, have borne the brunt of the devastation caused by these catastrophic events. Nurses from these countries have stepped in providing emergency care in hospitals and in the field, addressing public health needs in evacuation centers, supporting epidemiologic surveillance and conducting health education, training and research, to help save lives and support communities build back better.

Abstract
The lessons from this book help surgeons prepare for emergency events that require disaster preparedness usually handled by the United States military, including chemical attacks and massive casualty events. Written by experts in the field perspectives that come from various combat zones and disaster sites, this book highlights the pitfalls to avoid, the organization that is essential for success, and the tips to help perform surgery in the most austere conditions. The book will address situations where surgeons may have to operate on wanted criminals, operate wearing chemical protective equipment, operate in a collapsed building, or even remove an unexploded device. The book includes cases from the battlefield that are designed to guide surgeons facing these scenarios in the civilian world. There are also chapters detailing the lessons learned from the Boston Marathon Bombing, airline disasters, and the Oklahoma City bombing. Unlike any other current text, Surgery During Natural Disasters, Combat, Terrorist Attacks, and Crisis Situations is an excellent resource for all surgeons who might be faced with these events.
