Abstract
The second volume in the Health Services Research series provides a series of perspectives on comparative effectiveness research. Motivated by concern from the general public, governments in virtually all countries with developed and rapidly developing economies have been actively seeking and promoting ways of improving the patient experience of health care, improving the health of populations, and reducing the per capita cost of health care. While comparing treatment outcomes is not a new concept, appreciation of its potential application has grown in recent years. In addition to traditional health sciences methods, modern approaches to comparative effectiveness research now include greater emphasis on social sciences frameworks such as economics, ethics, and implementation science. Moreover, a key feature of the modern approach to comparing treatment outcomes is a focus on the individual patient through explicit consideration of inter-patient variability and patient-reported outcomes. Comparative Effectiveness Research presents a series of chapters of relevance including introductions to areas that are being incorporated when comparing treatments, country-specific applications, patient-centred approaches, and modern methods. Included are chapters on the following areas that are being considered in treatment comparisons: ethics, economics and costs, implementation science, modern payment schemes (coverage with evidence development), and priority setting. Country-specific examples include an overview chapter on national approaches from various countries in Europe, Australia, and Canada, as well as specific chapters on comparative effectiveness research in Brazil and in the United States. The focus on the individual patient is described through chapters on patient-centred comparative effectiveness research, individualized treatment, the link with personalized medicine, and incorporating patient and public input for treatment. Methodological chapters include overviews of data sources, study designs, new statistical methods of combining results, the link with evidence-based medicine, specific issues when comparing drug and non-drug technologies, and dissemination of results.

Abstract
Adopting a truly global perspective and a practical approach to diabetes--including pathophysiology, genetics, regional peculiarities, management, prevention and best practices--this book is an excellent resource for clinicians and policy-makers working with patients in more austere settings. The global prevalence of diabetes is estimated to increase from 422 million in 2014 to 592 million in 2035. Sadly, low- and middle-economy countries are projected to experience the steepest increase, but even in developed economies, vulnerable demographic subgroups manifest disparities in diabetes prevalence, quality of care, and outcomes. This book extends coverage to those underserved and minority communities in the developed world. In a consistent chapter format, it discusses classification, pathophysiology, genomics, diagnosis, prevention and management of diabetes in economically challenged regions as well as underserved populations in affluent nations. Suggestions regarding future directions in the organization of diabetes care delivery, prevention and research priorities are also provided. The detailed identification of barriers to optimal care and the practical approach to the management and prevention of diabetes make Diabetes Mellitus in Developing Countries and Underserved Communities a valuable resource for clinicians, researchers and health policy leaders.

Abstract
While there is not one global definition of the term "food poverty", the evidence from the chapters in this book suggest food poverty can be seen from three perspectives: 1) the causes and constraints facing both individuals, households, communities and policy makers, 2) constrained choices or the "lived experience" and 3) the health impacts or outcomes. As a working definition of food poverty, this approach suggests that where constraints are such that it is not possible for individuals or households to consume a nutritionally adequate diet, they could be considered to be in food poverty. The modern food system has introduced new complexities to food insecurity with the growth of micro-nutrient inequalities. As a result of growing levels of poverty and inequality, hunger and obesity are not being faced by two different groups, but often by the same group. While the developed world faces a problem with overconsumption and chronic diseases, the developing world is addressing the double burden of hunger and over-consumption. Even in the developed world, nation states are facing the rise of modern malnutrition, which includes both over-consumption and the re-emergence of hunger: over-consumption combined with austerity. The volume undertakes a critical examination of food poverty and food security by addressing topics such as tensions over the role of the state, the movement towards rights and responsibilities around food, and the rising tide of food poverty. Auth ors also cover possible solutions at both national and city state levels. The editors conclude with a chapter that draws together the issues and locates solutions within a food policy framework of the total food system. These studies help reveal the complexities of food insecurity within a global context, with the goal of clarifying taken for granted assumptions in present discourses.

Abstract
Over the last 30-40 years, information technology (IT) has revolutionized professional life for millions of people around the world. IT has reduced the need for bulk storage of paper records by organizations, has enabled automation of tasks that were previously repetitive and labor-intensive, and carry them out in a fast and accurate way, has enabled economies of scale, improved efficiencies and enabled new ways of working that were hitherto impossible. In parallel with the rise of IT during the last 40 years, the role of the pharmacist--and the society in which pharmacists work--has changed considerably. Pharmacists are no longer principally compounders of medicines, but they are still responsible for ensuring that the patient receives the correct medicine, ensuring that the patient understands why they should take their medicine, and helping the patient with taking the medicine and being concordant with therapy. Information Technology in Pharmacy: an Integrated Approach provides a concise and practical general introduction to pharmacy IT, discusses issues surrounding the adoption of technology and how technologies may be utlilized by the pharmacy profession to exercise new professional roles and achieve new professional aspirations. This book will be of prime interest to practicing pharmacists at all levels, pharmacy students and pharmacy educators, but also to health informaticians, hospital and health care system administrators.

Abstract
The writings of earliest civilizations reveal that diabetes mellitus has afflicted man for a very long time. Unfortunately, however, we are now experiencing a world-wide pandemic of the disease which has not been adequately addressed. Available evidence suggests that worldwide every 10 seconds one patient dies of diabetes and its severe complications. The outlook is even more bleak with the prediction of half of a billion diabetic patients by the year 2030. The cost-impact of the disease poses a major challenge for both developed and developing countries and their economies. Thus, it is high time to reconsider and revise the current strategies in diabetes care. Accordingly, a paradigm shift from reactive to perspective medicine has become a timely consideration. This shift is based on the concept of Predictive, Preventive and Personalized Medicine (PPPM). The rationale for PPPM relates to the recognition that prediction of persons at high risk for the disease (i.e., diabetes mellitus) should help devise strategies to prevent its target organ complications, and create effective treatments tailored to the individual patient, thereby reducing morbidity, and associated costs, and mortality. The current book entitled 'New Strategies to Advance Pre/Diabetes Care: Integrative Approach by PPPM' is intended to serve as a reference source for researchers and the healthcare industry with a special emphasis on health promotion in the general population and help design innovative strategies to prevent the onset of diabetes mellitus and its secondary complications.

Abstract
Degenerative conditions of the knee place an increasing burden on health economies and lead to pain and functional loss for sufferers. Although arthroplasty may not offer a level of functional restoration that meets all patients’ expectations, joint preservation through osteotomy is a viable option in younger, more physically active patients. This volume is a comprehensive technical guide to performing knee-preserving surgery to treat degenerative conditions and malalignment-associated knee instability. Drawing on their extensive experience of these procedures, the authors provide valuable insights into identifying patients who may benefit, as well as planning and performing the procedures with a high degree of precision, and explaining the results that can be achieved. This book both initiates novices and provides technical tips for experienced surgeons, and as such is an indispensible resource for all clinicians who treat patients with knee conditions.

Abstract
There is now considerable experience of implementing electronic prescribing systems in hospitals in the United States, the United Kingdom and other healthcare economies, with clear evidence that a well-designed electronic prescribing system can improve patient safety and quality of care. There is therefore likely to be an exponential growth in the significance of electronic prescribing over the next ten years. This second edition of Principles of Electronic Prescribing discusses the basic principles of design and implementation of secondary care electronic medicines management systems, and how their design and configuration can impact on benefits realization, hospital workflow and clinical practice. It will therefore be of considerable interest to all involved in the management of these systems, from healthcare administrators to pharmacists to the clinicians prescribing these medicines.

Abstract
This book explores the pivotal role played by technology over the past decade in advancing global public health and health care. At present, the global community faces unprecedented healthcare challenges fueled by an aging population, rising rates of chronic disease, and persistent health disparities. New technologies and advancements have the potential to extend the reach of health professionals while improving quality and efficiency of service delivery and reducing costs within the public and the private health systems. The chapters highlight the barriers faced by the global healthcare workforce in using technology to promote health and human rights of communities. As a resource on the evolution of technology as a valuable and integral component in the promotion and practice of public health and health care, with a focus on SDG 3 targets, Technology and Global Public Health should engage students, instructors, practitioners, and other professionals interested in public health, universal health care, health technology, digital health, and health equity.
