- The second volume in the Health Services Research series provides a series of perspectives on comparative effectiveness research. Motivated by concern from the general public, governments in virtually all countries with developed and rapidly developing economies have been actively seeking and promoting ways of improving the patient experience of health care, improving the health of populations, and reducing the per capita cost of health care. While comparing treatment outcomes is not a new concept, appreciation of its potential application has grown in recent years. In addition to traditional health sciences methods, modern approaches to comparative effectiveness research now include greater emphasis on social sciences frameworks such as economics, ethics, and implementation science. Moreover, a key feature of the modern approach to comparing treatment outcomes is a focus on the individual patient through explicit consideration of inter-patient variability and patient-reported outcomes. Comparative Effectiveness Research presents a series of chapters of relevance including introductions to areas that are being incorporated when comparing treatments, country-specific applications, patient-centred approaches, and modern methods. Included are chapters on the following areas that are being considered in treatment comparisons: ethics, economics and costs, implementation science, modern payment schemes (coverage with evidence development), and priority setting. Country-specific examples include an overview chapter on national approaches from various countries in Europe, Australia, and Canada, as well as specific chapters on comparative effectiveness research in Brazil and in the United States. The focus on the individual patient is described through chapters on patient-centred comparative effectiveness research, individualized treatment, the link with personalized medicine, and incorporating patient and public input for treatment. Methodological chapters include overviews of data sources, study designs, new statistical methods of combining results, the link with evidence-based medicine, specific issues when comparing drug and non-drug technologies, and dissemination of results.

- While there is not one global definition of the term "food poverty", the evidence from the chapters in this book suggest food poverty can be seen from three perspectives: 1) the causes and constraints facing both individuals, households, communities and policy makers, 2) constrained choices or the "lived experience" and 3) the health impacts or outcomes. As a working definition of food poverty, this approach suggests that where constraints are such that it is not possible for individuals or households to consume a nutritionally adequate diet, they could be considered to be in food poverty. The modern food system has introduced new complexities to food insecurity with the growth of micro-nutrient inequalities. As a result of growing levels of poverty and inequality, hunger and obesity are not being faced by two different groups, but often by the same group. While the developed world faces a problem with overconsumption and chronic diseases, the developing world is addressing the double burden of hunger and over-consumption. Even in the developed world, nation states are facing the rise of modern malnutrition, which includes both over-consumption and the re-emergence of hunger: over-consumption combined with austerity. The volume undertakes a critical examination of food poverty and food security by addressing topics such as tensions over the role of the state, the movement towards rights and responsibilities around food, and the rising tide of food poverty. Auth ors also cover possible solutions at both national and city state levels. The editors conclude with a chapter that draws together the issues and locates solutions within a food policy framework of the total food system. These studies help reveal the complexities of food insecurity within a global context, with the goal of clarifying taken for granted assumptions in present discourses.

Available evidence suggests that worldwide every 10 seconds one patient dies of diabetes and its severe complications. The outlook is even more bleak with the prediction of half of a billion diabetic patients by the year 2030. The cost-impact of the disease poses a major challenge for both developed and developing countries and their economies. Thus, it is high time to reconsider and revise the current strategies in diabetes care. Accordingly, a paradigm shift from reactive to perspective medicine has become a timely consideration. This shift is based on the concept of Predictive, Preventive and Personalized Medicine (PPPM). The rationale for PPPM relates to the recognition that prediction of persons at high risk for the disease (i.e., diabetes mellitus) should help devise strategies to prevent its target organ complications, and create effective treatments tailored to the individual patient, thereby reducing morbidity, and associated costs, and mortality. The current book entitled 'New Strategies to Advance Pre/Diabetes Care: Integrative Approach by PPPM' is intended to serve as a reference source for researchers and the healthcare industry with a special emphasis on health promotion in the general population and help design innovative strategies to prevent the onset of diabetes mellitus and its secondary complications.

- Degenerative conditions of the knee place an increasing burden on health economies and lead to pain and functional loss for sufferers. Although arthroplasty may not offer a level of functional restoration that meets all patients’ expectations, joint preservation through osteotomy is a viable option in younger, more physically active patients. This volume is a comprehensive technical guide to performing knee-preserving surgery to treat degenerative conditions and malalignment-associated knee instability.
