- Antimicrobial resistance is now a general problem. Many of us have elderly relatives who died from a drug-resistant infection, and some of us have suffered from a resistant urinary infection that likely came from intestinal bacteria following antibiotic consumption. Antimicrobial Resistance in the 21st Century provides a broad introduction to the subject in which the situation with problematic pathogens is detailed, the biology of resistance is described, and gaining approval for new antibiotics is discussed. Some topics are immediately practical, such as watching for resistant pathogen sub-populations in cultures taken from patients; other topics point to future research efforts that may lead to new antimicrobials and ways to stimulate the action of existing ones. Overall, Antimicrobial Resistance in the 21st Century provides an update for physicians, serves as a starting point for graduate students interested in solving the resistance problem, and may serve as a text for a course on resistance. Lay readers familiar with microbiology will gain an appreciation for a medical issue that promises to be one of the most important of our time.

The currently available equipment and equipment anticipated in the near future is covered. The second section summarizes current clinical applications of advanced imaging and visualization in the OR. Also explored is the evidence suggesting that predisposition to increasingly common afflictions such as asthma and multiple sclerosis is influenced, in combination with our genetic composition, by early life exposure to environmental microbes and the time of onset of common viral infections. Chapters provide the most recent information on these disorders with regards to epidemiology, current concepts on pathogenesis and mechanisms of their biology, recent research and data on the role of microbes, analysis of their validity, and conclusive remarks and areas for future research. The Role of Microbes in Common Non-Infectious Diseases is an excellent resource for both physicians and investigators from a broad range of disciplines that will help to stimulate new concepts of disease pathogenesis, and lead to the unraveling of their mechanisms of diseases and to novel treatments. - This text provides a comprehensive textbook summarizing the presentation, workup, and surgical solutions for common emergencies in the cancer patient. The use of medications (antibiotics, hormones, and biologic therapies) and interventional radiologic procedures as adjuncts or as replacements for the surgical solutions are discussed. The text covers emergencies that result as adverse effects for the systemic and local treatments for cancer, emergencies that result from mechanical issues with the cancer and those that result from surviving major extirpative surgery. Diagnosis and treatment of patients' immune-compromised or thrombocytopenic status from chemotherapy is discussed, as is surgical treatment in patients with prior complex surgical therapy or radiation treatment. Finally, the text covers alternatives to surgery, including new interventional radiologic and endoscopic procedures. Surgical Emergencies in the Cancer Patient will be of great value to healthcare professionals at all levels who are involved in the treatment of emergencies in the cancer patient.
