Abstract
This richly illustrated atlas provides a clear and comprehensive step-by-step description of surgical techniques for raising and setting free flaps from different donor sites, to reconstruct damage to the head and neck caused by cancer and trauma. Adopting a highly practical approach, the book describes the indications and technical aspects of each procedure with sets of in-vivo pictures clearly showing the surgical passages. In addition, it discusses microvascular techniques and explores different soft-tissue, perforator and bone flaps, including novel free tissue flaps, presented for the first time in the head and neck field. This book offers invaluable insights into free-flap harvesting and transferring techniques for both residents and experienced specialists in the field of otolaryngology, head and neck, maxillo-facial and plastic surgery.

Abstract
This volume presents a comprehensive overview of childhood trauma, considering the psychopathological definition and its neurobiological implications as well as its impact on different psychiatric disorders. The focus on childhood trauma rather than that occurring in adulthood is important due to its general “neuro-psyco-socio” and its specific biological implications, since trauma during childhood impacts directly on neurodevelopment. It has been suggested that early life stress increases vulnerability to psychiatric disorders; however, the exact mechanisms of this association are not yet completely understood. Although childhood trauma could be considered too unspecific to be an important risk factor for individual psychiatric disorders since it seems to occur across the board, it impacts differently on different psychiatric disorders, and it can modulate their clinical expression. Therefore, the assessment of early trauma needs to be included in the clinical evaluation of patients with psychiatric disorders. The volume will be an invaluable tool for psychiatrists, helping them to select suitable pharmacological, psychotherapeutic and rehabilitative treatments.

Abstract
This book describes in detail the specific aspects of ECG during childhood and adolescence, pursuing an accessible, didactic and easy-to-read approach. Instructive, self-contained and intelligently written, it succeeds in making this diagnostic tool, the interpretation of which is especially complex in younger patients, more comprehensible, while also offering a sound and extensive reference guide for all those who diagnose young patients with electrocardiography. Though ECG produces a relatively simple set of readings, its interpretation and diagnosis are complex. If misinterpreted, a "butterfly effect" of hidden, often neglected heart signals can lead to important and sometimes devastating consequences. Featuring an exceptionally wide range of ECG recordings and examples, the volume sheds new light on the importance of electrophysiological examinations for patients still in their developmental years and provides advice on the use of ECG in connection with recent regulations on the participation of children, adolescents and young athletes in sports. Thanks to the variety of scenarios described, from the most frequent to the most insidious, this work will appeal to a broad readership, from cardiologists and pediatricians to family physicians, anesthesiologists, doctors in sports medicine, students and nurses.

Abstract
This book is published open access under a CC BY 4.0 license.
This open access book examines the triangle between family, gender, and health in Europe from a demographic perspective. It helps to understand patterns and trends in each of the three components separately, as well as their interdependencies. It overcomes the widely observable specialization in demographic research, which usually involves researchers studying either family or fertility processes or focusing on health and mortality. Coverage looks at new family and partnership forms among the young and middle-aged, their relationship with health, and the pathways through which they act. Among the old, lifelong family biography and present family situation are explored. Evidence is provided that partners advancing in age start to resemble each other more closely in terms of health, with the health of the partner being a crucial factor of an individual’s own health. Gender-specific health outcomes and pathways are central in the designs of the studies and the discussion of the results. The book compares twelve European countries reflecting different welfare state regimes and offers country-specific studies conducted in Austria, Germany, Italy--all populations which have received less attention in the past--and Sweden. As a result, readers discover the role of different concepts of family and health as well as comparisons within European countries and ethnic groups. It will be an insightful resource for students, academics, policy makers, and researchers that will help define future research in terms of gender and public health.

Abstract
This book describes how different diagnostic techniques may facilitate the prenatal identification of orofacial malformations. The role of standard two-dimensional ultrasound is documented and explained, but detailed attention is also paid to the use of three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound, including the novel 3D reslicing technique, and to the value of complementary magnetic resonance imaging. The malformations considered include cleft lip, cleft lip and palate, ocular malformations, abnormalities associated with fetal aneuploidy, and tumors. These conditions are depicted in numerous high-quality images accompanied by thorough and informative descriptions of imaging findings. The excellence of the illustrative material and the caliber of the authors, who are leading international experts in the field, ensure that Prenatal Diagnosis of Orofacial Malformations will be an invaluable tool for obstetricians and gynecologists.

Abstract
This well-illustrated book provides step-by-step guidance on the various techniques--microlaryngoscopic, fiberoptic endoscopic, and transcutaneous--that can be employed for the purpose of injection laryngoplasty, a surgical procedure in which a foreign material is injected into the vocal fold. The anatomy and function of the region are first explained, with identification of the causes and means of evaluation of glottic and neoglottic insufficiency. Advice is then provided on the choice of material for injection laryngoplasty, including absorbable and long-lasting options, on the basis of careful analysis that takes into account both the recent literature and the authors' own experiences. Detailed descriptions of the surgical indications and different procedures follow, and for ease of reference, clear flow charts on diagnosis and indications are also included. The book concludes with chapters on the use of injection laryngoplasty specifically in the pediatric population and on postoperative care and speech therapy following the procedure. Injection Laryngoplasty will provide valuable assistance to all surgeons wishing to perform this kind of surgery.
Contents
1. Introduction to Injection Laryngoplasty -- 2. Anatomy-Physiology of the Glottic and Neoglottic Region -- 3. Glottic and Neoglottic Insufficiency: Causes, Functional Problems and Evaluation -- 4. Abstract
This book covers a wide array of hematologic problems commonly encountered in the daily practice of critical care and emergency medicine. Unfortunately, the symptoms and signs associated with underlying hematologic disorders are frequently rather unspecific and confounding; furthermore, the clinical course of patients admitted to intensive care units with such disorders can be fulminant, warranting prompt diagnosis. This book recognizes the importance of accurate and speedy interpretation of symptoms in that the text is symptom oriented rather than disease oriented. Put another way, the reader confronted with a particular clinical problem or symptom will be guided step by step to the possible underlying disorder(s). The scenarios considered include critical illness in patients with anemia, leukopenia, leukocytosis, abnormal platelet count, and severe transfusion reactions. For each circumstance, factors relevant to symptom interpretation are fully discussed. In addition, helpful diagnostic algorithms are presented in the form of flow charts that will assist in decision making regarding the need for further investigations. The closing chapter is devoted to the drug-induced hematologic disorders. Although the book is intended mainly for intensivists, other specialists will find much information of value for their daily practice.

Abstract
One of the main problems concerning therapeutic tools for the treatment of parasitic diseases, including leishmaniasis, is that some field parasites are naturally resistant to the classical drugs; additionally, current therapies may select parasites prone to be resistant to the applied drugs. These features are (at least partially) responsible for the disappointing persistence of the disease and resultant deaths worldwide. This book provides a comprehensive view of the pathology of the disease itself, and of parasitic drug resistance, its molecular basis, consequences and possible treatments. Scientists both from academic fields and from the industry involved in biomedical research and drug design, will find in this book a valuable and fundamental guide that conveys the knowledge needed to understand and to improve the success in combating this disease worldwide.

Abstract
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become one of the most powerful diagnostic tools in modern medicine, with a number of well-known advantages in terms of image quality, functional imaging options, and patient safety. The idea of using this enormous potential also for interventional purposes may seem obvious, but it took major efforts by engineers, physicists, and clinicians to come up with dedicated interventional techniques and scanners, and improvements are still ongoing. Since the inception of interventional MRI in the mid-1990s, the numbers of settings, techniques, and clinical applications have increased dramatically. This state of the art book covers all aspects of interventional MRI. The more technical contributions offer an overview of the fundamental ideas and concepts and present the available instrumentation. The richly illustrated clinical contributions, ranging from MRI-guided biopsies to completely MRI-controlled therapies in various body regions, provide detailed information on established and emerging applications and identify future trends and challenges.

Abstract
This mini-encyclopedia aims to provide a survey of the wide range of interventions available for treating schizophrenia at a level appropriate for non-specialists who are beginning their engagement in the area and for others as a source of reference for the specialist. The pharmacological options are considered alongside psychosocial management approaches and the advantages and disadvantages of each treatment modality are outlined. The entries are written by leading experts, including basic and clinical scientists in academia and industry, and include descriptions of many relevant fundamental psychological and biological processes of the disorder. The volume owes much to the Encyclopedia of Psychopharmacology edited by Ian Stolerman IP (published by Springer-Verlag in 2010), from which some entries are reproduced. Where entries deal with pharmacological interventions, the aim is to provide detailed information on the neuropsychopharmacology of the substances from domains such as clinical, experimental, and molecular pharmacology, insofar as they impact upon understanding of schizophrenia. Articles on non-drug interventions review the most recent evidence base related to commonly applied psychotherapeutic and rehabilitative measures. Other essays focus upon the key concepts and research methods used in the field, describing the main features of investigative techniques and outlining their roles, the types of information obtained and why they are needed; the advantages and limitations of a technique may also be summarized. The essays are complemented by many short definitions of important terms; in the interest of ease of reading, these definitions are not assigned to named authors; they are typically related to specific essays that they cross-reference and relevant authorship details can be found in the latter.
