If you catch DKA early, you may be able to treat it successfully at home. DKA can become severe (very bad) or even life-threatening. If this happens, go to the Emergency Department right away. This pamphlet gives tips on how to check for ketones, what to do if you are sick, getting enough fluids, and preventing hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).
