- Regional cancer therapies remain important options in the management of malignant disease, in spite of the venue of more targeted agents for systemic therapies. New technologies and better guidance systems for radiofrequency ablation and intrastitial laser therapies, highly selective intravascular approaches with improved catheters and guidance systems, improved agents for embolizations, and new vasoactive drugs for isolated limb and liver perfusions are just a few of the new developments in a field that is alive and progressing. Regional Cancer Therapy, so well put together by the editors Peter M. Schlag and Ulrike S. Stein, presents an overview of today's realities and tomorrow's possibilities. Regional cancer therapy models provide ways to make new discoveries about tumor biology and new agents that may be used regionally as well as systemically. This book should therefore be of interest to all clinicians and scientists with an interest in tumor biology as well as clinical advances. The treatment of malignant tumors has been substantially improved in recent years due to developments in clinical medicine and technology as well as by advances in molecular biological research. Given the increasing evidence that the patients who may benefit from this treatment modality avoid potential lethal course of these diseases, the book explores the application of these approaches to a number of types of malignancy. The first chapters explore Benign Multicystic Mesothelioma and Pseudomyxoma Peritonei arising from unusual primaries. The monograph includes up-to-date information on etiology, pathogenesis and diagnostics of malignant mesothelioma and pseudomyxoma peritonei, as well as detailed description of surgical and combined treatment of patients with these diseases. The book comprises a large illustrative material presented by schemes and original micrographs that represent pathological and immunohistochemical specific features of these malignancies, demonstrate the stages of surgical operations and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, and show the results of experimental studies. The book includes validated discussion on etiology and pathogenesis of malignant mesothelioma and pseudomyxoma peritonei, differential diagnosis and treatment of these diseases. The scope is really extensive and involves, for instance, a description of the technique of cytoreductive surgeries and regimens of intraperitoneal hyperthermic chemoperfusion, whereas a particular section discusses experimental ground for optimal regimens of hyperthermia, local chemotherapy and adoptive immunotherapy by cytokine induced killers. The final section presents the most recent data about perspective approaches for immunotherapy of malignant mesothelioma and pseudomyxoma peritonei with cell based technologies and target drugs including inhibitors of immune checkpoints. - This book encompasses all areas for mesothelioma care, treatment, and research. Using nurses, social workers, surgeons, oncologist, radiologist and pain specialist to give the reader a comprehensive overview of mesothelioma treatment. Indeed, mesothelioma is a cancer that mainly affects the pleura and peritoneum, usually caused by exposure to asbestos. The number of individuals diagnosed with mesothelioma is increasing world-wide, particularly in developing countries where the use of asbestos remains uncontrolled. In spite of advances in chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgical approaches, mesothelioma remains resistant to treatment. According to the International Mesothelioma Interest group, overall survival has not improved; median survival times vary from one month to eighteen months. A small number of patients remain asymptomatic or with minimal symptoms for extended periods, and fewer live three years or more. Mesothelioma is often associated with difficult, intractable symptoms, particularly pain and difficulty breathing. Especially poor prognoses have been reported for those diagnosed with sarcomatoid rather than epithelioid histology, or with advanced disease, poor performance status, or pain and loss of appetite. Despite substantial progress of the last two decades improving the quality of life of patients with cancer, many mesothelioma patients still experience physical, psychological, social, and financial burdens. The development of multimodality treatment and mesothelioma centers has given renewed hope to patients. This book serves as a unique tool for medical professional while providing care for mesothelioma patients.
