Abstract
Vascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide. Distinguished clinical and surgical approaches have attempted to overcome its morbidity and mortality; still 17.9 million people die every year due to vascular affections. Stem cell therapy has emerged as a promising therapeutic strategy. Stem cells synthesize and secrete cytokines that promote cell recruitment, immunomodulation, extracellular matrix remodeling, angiogenesis, and neuroregeneration, all of which promote regeneration. Besides that, stem cells are also capable of differentiating in various cell types, being employed in tissue engineering. Preclinical and clinical investigations have reported efficacy of stem cell therapy for various vascular diseases. Even though results are encouraging, the studies demonstrate variation in stem cell type and origin, route and protocol for administration, and concomitant use of other treatment strategies, impairing easy interpretation of results and clinical application. The purpose of this book is to compile and comprise the current state of the evidence regarding stem cell therapy for each vascular disease, elucidating possible clinical applications. More than an objective guide for readers on the use of this novel treatment strategy, this publication will advocate for stem cell therapy use and development and will be of significant interest to physicians in a wide range of disciplines as well as researchers.

This book, written by a team of international experts, concisely reviews the rationale and clinical application of image-guided total marrow irradiation, a rapidly emerging area in radiation oncology and hematopoietic cell transplantation. The aim is to provide the practicing radiation oncologist, hematologist, medical physicist, and bone marrow transplant researcher with a fundamental understanding of key aspects and an appreciation of the increasing significance of total marrow irradiation as conditioning for bone marrow transplantation. Detailed attention is paid to the impacts of recent advances in radiation therapy technology, functional PET and MRI, and understanding of the response of bone marrow to radiation. This excellently illustrated monograph summarizes the updated fresh information on the theoretical, practical, and rapidly extended facets of gamma correction 99mTc-hydroxymethylene diphosphonate pinhole bone scan (99mTc-GCPBS) to MRI, CR, and MDCT. Basically, 99mTc-GCPBS is able to precisely visualize and quantitate callused trabecular microfracture (CTMF) which is as little as 200 µm in size. The extended gamma correction images can very neatly demonstrate CTMF on MRI, conventional radiography (CR), and multidetector computed tomography (MDCT). Whenever appropriate, histological correlation is provided in conjunction with fine gamma corrected images. In this setting, ACDSee 10 gamma correction MRI and CR have been found to offer a highly useful option that deserves wider clinical interest. In practice, gamma correction MRI, CR, and MDCT can distinctly visualize CTMF so that CTMF can be precisely measured simply using an optic lens. By comparison, the naïve MRI, for example, shows CTMF which measures as big as 2 mm in size. Furthermore, 99mTc-GCPBS can now differentiate bone marrow edema from hemorrhage using the visuospatial mathematic method, which includes the ImageJ of the NIH.

Adolescent females experience a variety of blood disorders that are often unique to this patient population. As they go through puberty, they are uniquely poised to encounter various bleeding and thrombotic disorders once they attain menarche, start to have menstrual bleeding, and require hormonal therapy. This may in turn lead to other medical conditions, such as anemia and iron deficiency. Pregnancy encountered by some adolescents can pose hematologic challenges specifically in regards to bleeding and thrombotic disorders. In addition, adolescent females are at risk to develop immune mediated hematologic disorders, such as immune thrombocytopenia, auto-immune hemolytic anemia, and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, as well as vitamin deficiencies due to pernicious anemia. Sickle cell disease, thalassemia and bone marrow failure disorders in the adolescent female poses unique challenges that need to be addressed with special care and attention. Knowledge about these various blood disorders in adolescent females is crucial for the treating physician in order to accurately diagnose and optimally manage these teenagers. Otherwise, it can affect their overall health, causing hematologic and gynecologic issues, poor quality of life, neurocognitive impairments, and poor psycho-social development, all of which can lead to various complications immediately and into adulthood. This book provides a comprehensive, state-of-the art overview of blood disorders in female adolescents. The text follows the WHO (2016) classification in essence but the material is organized in a fashion most useful to a practicing surgical pathologist.
