Abstract
Compartment syndrome is a complex physiologic process with significant potential harm, and though an important clinical problem, the basic science and research surrounding this entity remains poorly understood. This unique open access book fills the gap in the knowledge of compartment syndrome, re-evaluating the current state of the art on this condition. The current clinical diagnostic criteria are presented, as well as the multiple dilemmas facing the surgeon. Pathophysiology, ischemic thresholds and pressure management techniques and limitations are discussed in detail. The main surgical management strategy, fasciotomy, is then described for both the upper and lower extremities, along with wound care. Compartment syndrome due to patient positioning, in children and polytrauma patients, and unusual presentations are likewise covered. Novel diagnosis and prevention strategies, as well as common misconceptions and legal ramifications stemming from compartment syndrome, round out the presentation. Unique and timely, Compartment Syndrome: A Guide to Diagnosis and Management will be indispensable for orthopedic and trauma surgeons confronted with this common yet challenging medical condition.
Contents
Diagnostic Dilemma for Orthopaedic Surgeon -- Legal Aspects of Compartment Syndrome -- Pathophysiology of compartment syndrome -- Determining Ischemic Thresholds Through Our Understanding of Cellular Metabolism -- Pressure Measurement: Surrogate of Ischaemia -- Limitations of Pressure Measurement -- Fasciotomy: Upper Extremity -- Compartment Syndrome of the Lower Extremity -- Fasciotomy Wound Management -- Foot Compartment Syndrome Controversy -- Management of Missed Compartment Syndrome -- Compartment Syndrome Due to Patient Positioning -- Acute Compartment Syndrome in Children -- Compartment Syndrome in Polytrauma Patients -- Unusual Presentation of Compartment Syndrome -- Common Misperceptions Among Health Care Professionals -- Novel Modalities to Diagnose and Prevent Compartment Syndrome.

Abstract
This book describes both the technologies used in the discovery of melanoma biomarkers and the clinical application of these biomarkers for diagnosis and staging of disease, determination of prognosis, treatment planning, monitoring of response to therapy, identification of novel therapeutic targets and drug development. A broad range of biomarkers (DNA/chromosomal, mRNA, microRNA, mitochondrial DNA, epigenetic and protein) is outlined. As therapies for melanoma become increasingly more target specific, the identification, validation and use of biomarkers will invariably play a greater role in the management of patients with this disease. Diagnostic and Prognostic Biomarkers and Therapeutic Targets in Melanoma is an essential resource for oncologists, dermatologists, dermatopathologists, general pathologists with an interest in melanoma, and melanoma researchers.

Abstract
This unique text fills a major gap in the emergency services literature by surveying the research on fire and rescue service management in the UK. An extensive evidence base focuses on organizational culture, leadership skills, standards, and accountability, emphasizing the services' dual roles as first responders and guardians of public safety and prevention. The implications for international public health and safety programs are made clear as the services' recent history illustrates the complex challenges typical of functioning within local and national political contexts. Chapters take on a broad range of management, leadership, service delivery, and staffing concerns, including: Evolution and adaptation of fire and rescue services during periods of expansion and austerity; Civil protection as a local and national priority; Structural issues: assessments and improvements, collaborations with other services; Emerging social concerns: diversity, gender equality, the aging worker population; The concepts and consequences of heroes and heroism; Future directions for governance, transparency, and accountability. Fire and Rescue Services complements the earlier volumes in the Leadership & Management of Emergency Services series with equal parts realism and vision. It should interest a wide audience of public policymakers, public managers, and emergency service personnel, as well as academics and researchers.
Contents

Abstract
This book provides a broad overview of quality health care for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). It focuses on providing the reader a practical approach to dealing with the health and well-being of people with IDD in general terms as well as in dealing with specific conditions. In addition, it offers the reader a perspective from many different points of view in the health care delivery system as well as in different parts of the world. This is the 3rd, and much expanded edition, of a text that was first published by Rubin and Crocker in 1989 (Lea and Fibiger). The second edition was published by Rubin and Crocker in 2006 (Paul Brookes) and has been used as a formal required text in training programs for physicians, nurses and nurse practitioners as well as by administrators who are responsible for programs serving people with IDD. This book is considered the "Bible" in the field of health care for people with IDD since 1989 when the first edition came out.

Abstract
"One in ten adults over 65 has some form of mild cognitive impairment or MCI--thinking problems that go beyond those associated with normal aging, but that fall short of the serious impairments experienced by people with Alzheimer's Disease and other dementias. This is the first book written specifically for individuals with MCI, for their loved ones, and for the health care professionals who treat them. Written by three clinicians and researchers who have devoted their careers to MCI patients, this book provides up-to-date and reliable information on the nature of this disorder, how it may affect people, and what can be done about it. The authors explain how MCI is diagnosed and treated and they offer advice on how to improve cognitive health through diet and exercise, through social engagement, and through the use of practical, effective memory strategies. Throughout, case studies illustrate the real-life issues facing people living with MCI. The book includes "Questions to Ask Your Doctor," recommended readings and links to relevant websites, and worksheets to guide readers through healthy lifestyle changes"-- "This book is for individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), their loved ones, and the health care professionals with whom they navigate their journey with MCI. Provided are up-to-date scientifically substantiated knowledge about what MCI is, how it affects people, and how to take a proactive approach to health and wellbeing for living with MCI"--
Contents
Section one: What is mild cognitive impairment? -- Defining mild cognitive impairment -- How mild cognitive impairment differs from normal aging -- How mild cognitive impairment differs from dementia -- Possible outcomes of mild cognitive impairment -- Risk factors for mild cognitive impairment and dementia -- Section Two: How is mild cognitive impairment identified and managed? -- How mild cognitive impairment is diagnosed -- Treatment of mild cognitive impairment -- The personal impact of mild cognitive impairment -- Living effectively with mild cognitive impairment -- Taking charge of mild cognitive impairment -- Section Three: What can be done to improve prognosis? -- Healthy diet: feed your body, fuel your brain -- Exercise: jog your memory -- Cognitive engagement: getting your brain in gear -- Social engagement: a good friend is good medicine -- Memory strategies: techniques to improve everyday remembering.
