Legg-Calve-Perthes is a childhood condition of the hip joint, affecting the area where the thigh bone (femoral head) meets the pelvis in a ball-and-socket joint. This condition occurs when the thigh bone loses its blood supply, causing the bone to change shape. It is then unable to fit properly into the hip socket. The underlying cause of decreased blood flow to the thigh bone is unknown.

The pavlik harness is designed to gently position your child’s hips so they are properly aligned in the joint, all while keeping the hip joint secure. This technique is most commonly used for children who have unstable or dislocated hips. The harness itself acts to keep the knees bent (flexed) and the legs spread apart (abducted), which is the best position to allow for normal growth and development of the hip joint.
