Abstract
Patient empowerment as a key component in the future of healthcare systems is the focus of this concise in-depth analysis. It begins by defining patient empowerment as a collaborative partnership linking patients, providers, and systems, and examines the roles of health literacy, provider-patient and system-patient communication, and patient-centered care in the empowerment process. Models of positive and negative empowerment identify optimum conditions when patient and provider participate in service design and delivery as well as pitfalls and risks to patient and system when goals and input are mismatched. The book also translates concepts into practice with guidelines for empowerment strategies at the provider and organization levels to improve patient outcomes and system sustainability. Included in the coverage: Empowering healthcare organizations to empower patients; A re-design of the patient-provider partnership; Patient empowerment: a requisite for sustainability; The risks of value co-destruction in service systems; The need for enlightening and managing the dark side of patient empowerment; Disentangling the relationship between individual health literacy and patient empowerment. Straightforwardly written as a call for proactive change, The Bright Side and the Dark Side of Patient Empowerment is an illuminating text for scholars interested in patient empowerment and patient engagement, policymakers and managers operating in the healthcare field, and healthcare and social care providers.

Abstract
Written and edited by leading international authorities in the field, this book provides an in-depth review of knowledge of complications of CSF shunting, with emphasis on prevention, identification, and management. It covers the full range of shunt-related complications and the various associated adverse consequences that remain common despite significant improvements in imaging techniques and therapeutic methods. The chapters are organized into three parts: introduction, complications of extrathecal CSF shunt devices, and complications of endoscopy. In addition to providing clinicians and investigators with the most pertinent current evidence, the book looks forward to future areas of hydrocephalus research and to innovative therapeutic philosophies. This comprehensive reference book will be an ideal source for neurosurgeons seeking both basic and more sophisticated information and procedures relating to the complications associated with CSF shunting. It will also contribute in overcoming the problem of lack of knowledge of basic fluid dynamics and workings of the shunts: knowledge that is essential for optimal care of hydrocephalic patients.

Abstract
This handy book offers a complete overview of current minimally invasive techniques for the management of endocrine diseases of the neck, reflecting how, in the past few years, the development of various ultrasound-guided procedures and endoscopic/video-assisted surgical techniques has changed the approach to thyroid and parathyroid diseases. The book opens by describing the main diagnostic tools for thyroid, parathyroid, and cervical lymph nodes, focusing especially on the new technologies for tissue characterization. The different minimally invasive treatment procedures involving either a percutaneous approach (ethanol injection, laser thermal ablation, radiofrequency thermal ablation, high-intensity focused ultrasound) or minimally invasive surgery are then described in detail. The volume is intended for all clinicians and surgeons with an interest in the field of endocrinology and neck surgery. It provides a synthetic but clear description of the various available techniques from a technical point of view and discusses the main issues concerning each of them, permitting comparative evaluation in order to identify the best option in a particular case. It also reports the evidence available in the current literature.

Abstract
This book documents the state of the art in pediatric neurosurgery with the intention of providing a comprehensive guide to the management of the full range of pediatric neurosurgical disorders that will aid in the delivery of optimal care. Detailed practical instruction, taking into account recent advances, is provided on the neurosurgical treatment of congenital brain malformations, cerebrovascular diseases, head injuries and spinal trauma, infections, functional disorders, congenital and developmental spinal disorders, and brain and spinal tumors. Pearls and pitfalls are highlighted, and attention drawn to the most useful tips and tricks. Information is also included on relevant related topics, including the principles of neuroimaging, the physiological responses of newborns, infants, and children to neurosurgical trauma, preoperative evaluation, anesthesiology and intensive care, and other forms of therapy. The authors are renowned experts in the field, and the text is supported by a wealth of high-quality images. Handbook of Pediatric Neurosurgery will be of value for neurosurgeons of all levels of experience, as well as for pediatricians, neuroradiologists, neuropathologists, and neuro-oncologists.
