Abstract
This book critically examines the many complex entanglements between AIDS activism and HIV science. It takes readers on a medical anthropological expedition across time and space that highlights the stakes from the perspective of those most affected by the epidemic. Author Robert Lorway reveals how early in the HIV epidemic, amid inadequate government leadership, communities of people living with and directly affected by HIV and AIDS rose to become a vital force at the forefront of prevention responses. Yet now, more than three decades later, HIV prevention and treatment is increasingly being placed under the jurisdiction of clinical, epidemiological, and management scientific expertise. In this kind of context, where does activism figure into the possibility of more democratized collaborations between affected communities, scientists, and policy makers? Coverage draws upon the findings from an array of community research projects conducted in Canada, India, and Kenya over a 22-year period. It weaves together rich, original data sources that range from in-depth qualitative interviews, field notes, and primary and secondary archival document retrievals in these three regions. Offering a rich diversity in perspectives, this book tackles the broader themes related to global health policy, science, and transnational activism at the same time as it highlights the experiences and local arenas where debates about activism and science play out. In the end, Lorway questions the growing expectation for affected communities themselves to produce sound evidence to legitimize their advocacy projects. He calls for the planners and implementers of biomedically oriented HIV research and interventions to more meaningfully engage with communities in ways that de-monopolize decision making as a matter of ethics and improved scientific practice.

Abstract
Sleep-related abnormalities occurring as a result of allergic disorders can impact an affected individual’s health and overall well-being in a myriad of ways. This comprehensive book thoroughly covers the management of allergic and sleep disorders, providing a detailed discussion on how these co-occurring, often overlapping conditions can be treated in a personalized and patient-oriented manner. Allergy and Sleep: Basic Principles and Clinical Practice takes care to include a wide range of multidisciplinary perspectives required to effectively assess and manage allergy and sleep disorders, from allergists, sleep medicine specialists, otolaryngologists, and dermatologists, to primary care physicians, pharmacists, psychologists, and other researchers. Allergy and Sleep begins with a thorough grounding on the science of sleep, allergy, immunology, circadian rhythms and circadian immunology. Part II addresses assessment and treatment of common allergic diseases with comorbid sleep components, in a practical, easy-to-use case-based format. Later sections closely examine sleep-related disturbances commonly associated with asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic disease; providing treatment guidelines, and detail various approaches to management throughout the patient’s lifespan. This resource concludes with a review of disease, sleep and circadian-specific therapeutics. Written by experts in their respective fields, Allergy and Sleep: Basic Principles and Clinical Practice is an ideal resource and important reference for any clinician working with patients suffering from sleep-related abnormalities due to allergic disorders.

Abstract
Surgery for head neck cancer has evolved greatly in the recent years. Appropriate surgical resection with negative margins still remain corner-stone in achieving good oncological outcome. This atlas proposes a new concept of "The Compartment Surgery" to achieve negative margins in third dimensions which is the problem area in majority of cases. Reconstructive techniques have evolved vastly in the recent years with use of microvascular free flaps and this has significantly improved the functional outcome. Performing each step in appropriate manner cumulatively enables us to perform more complex procedures. Theme of this atlas revolves around this fact. This atlas on head and neck cancers takes a fresh stylistic approach where each surgical procedure is described in a step-wise manner through labeled high-resolution images with minimal incorporation of text. This allows the surgeons to rapidly revise the operative steps of a procedure within minutes just before they start a surgery. Head and neck has multidimensional anatomy and surgical treatment requires specific approach for each subsite. This operative atlas covers the entire spectrum of common, uncommon and rare cancers of the head and neck area. Each subsite is addressed in a separate chapter with further subdivisions for surgery of tumors with varying extent. Each procedure is demonstrated with photographs of each surgical step and line diagrams. Commonly used flaps (regional and free flaps) are demonstrated in separate chapter for reconstruction. With over 1000 images, and coverage of both the ablative and reconstructive surgical procedures, this is a technique-focused atlas in comparison to the available comprehensive texts. There are two chapters on very advanced cancers, and surgery in resource constrained surgical units making the book relevant to a wide range of cancer surgeons and fellows-in-training in varied clinical settings.

Abstract
This new atlas, the fourth of a successful series, is a completely revised and updated edition of a previously published FDG PET-CT atlas. In the past few years, considerable progress has been made in the field of PET-CT imaging, and this new edition takes full account of these recent developments. Furthermore, its educational mission has been broadened: beyond serving as a straightforward guide to FDG PET-CT imaging it now encompasses the integrative use of contrast-enhanced CT and MRI. The new edition also includes non-oncological indications for FDG PET-CT. The atlas aims to help imaging practitioners to recognize physiological and benign pathological FDG uptake and illustrates in a case-based, practical manner the PET-CT appearances of all the major tumors and infectious, inflammatory, and neurodegenerative disorders. The main clinical applications are covered, and learning points and pitfalls are clearly articulated. The consistent, user-friendly format facilitates image interpretation and allows rapid review of key information needed for FDG PET-CT imaging.

By discussing many key research issues, would-be and early-stage academics will not only be better informed about the world of biomedical research, but will learn a basic set of instructions to help jumpstart their careers. Biomedical Research: An Insider's Guide is divided into five sections. The first focuses on decision points regarding whether or not to enter research and if so what type: basic, clinical, or translational. The second section focuses on the practicalities of pursuing medical research, including institutional review boards and animal care committees as well general suggestions regarding idea generation and collaboration. The third section covers a core aspect of research: writing--detailing the evolution of both grants and papers. The fourth section addresses a range of issues, including conferencing to patents to working with industry to obtaining philanthropic support. The final section deals with all-important broader life issues from job choices to being a mentor to thoughts on how to keep the big picture front and center. An invaluable resource that offers insightful, practical advice, Biomedical Research: An Insider's Guide reveals how biomedical research can be both challenging and truly rewarding.

Abstract
Addressing all aspects of brain death and thoroughly detailing how a potential organ donor should be maintained to ensure maximum use of the organs and cells, The Brain-Dead Organ Donor: Pathophysiology and Management is a landmark addition to the literature. This first-of-its-kind, multidisciplinary volume will be of interest to a large section of the medical community. The first section of the book reviews the historical, medical, legal, and ethical aspects of brain death. That is followed by two chapters on the pathophysiology of brain death as investigated in small and large animal models. This includes a review of the many hormonal changes, including the neuroendocrine- adrenergic storm', that takes place during and following the induction of brain death, and how they impact metabolism. The next section of the book reviews various effects of brain death, namely its impact on thyroid function, the inflammatory response that develops, and those relating to innate immunity. The chapters relating to assessment and management of potential organ donors will be of interest to a very large group of transplant surgeons and physicians as well as critical care and neurocritical care physicians and nurses. Neurologists, endocrinologists, neurosurgeons, and pathologists will also be interested, especially in the more basic science sections on various aspects of brain-death and hormonal therapy. Organ procurement organizations and transplant coordinators worldwide will also be interested in this title. Other chapters will be of interest to medical historians, medico-legal experts, and ethicists.

Abstract
In our complex, fast changing society, health is strongly influenced by the continuously changing interactions between organisations and their employees. Three major fields contribute to health-oriented improvements of these interactions: occupational health, organizational health and public health. As currently only partial links exist amongst these fields, the book aims to explore potential synergies more systematically. Considering the high mental and social demands in a service and knowledge sector economy, the first part of the book focuses on work-related psychosocial factors. As a large proportion of inequalities in health in developed countries can be explained by inequalities in working conditions, those psychosocial factors with a particularly high public health impact are highlighted. As addressing these psychosocial factors requires to involve the organization as the key change agent, the second part covers approaches to improve public health through organizational level health interventions. The last section takes a look into the future of occupational, organizational and public health: what are the future challenges regarding occupational health and how can they be tackled within and beyond the organizational level. Overall, this integrating book will help to broaden the evidence-base, legitimacy and efficacy of occupational- and organizational-level health interventions and thus increase their public health impact.

Abstract
This textbook on burn care is focused specifically on the needs of a surgeon. It provides a "how to do" text that presents the practical strategies for initial resuscitation, skin grafting, burn-specific critical care and ultimately guide the surgeon for the best outcomes for the burn surgeon. It provides the reader with basic pathophysiology but avoids a detailed review of the molecular science of burns. Guidelines for basic care with the chapters covering the timeline used for each patient spanning from initial resuscitation (ABCs) to managing their re-socialization are provided. The text covers the key components to the initial management of the burn patient including airway, breathing and circulation. The reader is introduced to the metabolic changes of a major burn and how nutrition and pharmacologic manipulation affects these systemic effects of a burn injury. The management of burn sepsis as well as the basic concepts of wound healing of the different depths and severity of burns are covered. Another chapter covers the basic techniques of skin grafting, rehabilitation and reconstruction with a focus to optimize the cosmetic and functional outcome of the burn. Special chapters cover management of outpatient burns and pediatric injuries. Special burns, electrical, chemical, cold injuries and finally the treatment of other diseases that lead to massive skin loss are covered. Special considerations for pain, scar management, psychosocial recovery, intentional burns, burn prevention and disaster preparation complete the text. Burn Care for General Surgeons and General Practitioners provides a reference for general and plastic surgeons who are planning a career in burns. The textbook will also be a straightforward resource for the general or plastic surgeon who takes care of burns as part of their practice.

Abstract
This book presents a comprehensive compendium of case studies to inform clinicians how to optimally deploy the major clinically utilized biomarkers in cardiology. Biomarkers now play an integral role in the treatment and management of patients with congestive heart failure and acute ischemic heart disease because they provide crucial information about the status of individual patients. For that reason, it is important for clinicians to understand the basis for the use of these markers. Every reader may not have the laboratory and/or clinical expertise to understand all the details associated with the use of these markers, which is why this book takes a case oriented approach and by doing so provides a practical resource to guide the clinician through the options available. Cardiac Biomarkers discusses how to use these biomarkers optimally and, in particular, how to understand when values provide actionable information.
