Abstract
This book reviews the recent advances in understanding the pathophysiology and the fundamental diagnostic, clinical, and therapeutic aspects of arterial hypertension. It collates and updates the knowledge in this area and focuses on how to approach a patient with hypertension and cardiovascular disease. There is an overall emphasis on the deleterious consequences that hypertension has on the cardiovascular system, since hypertension often coexists with heart disease, arrhythmia and dyslipidemia, further increasing total cardiovascular risk. Each chapter adopts a concise approach to its topic and can therefore also be read as a standalone article. Hypertension and Cardiovascular Disease is a valuable text for scientists engaged in this complex field. It further serves to inspire young physicians, and emphasizes the need for scientific rigor to be applied to patient care as well as research.

Abstract
This new, revised and updated edition takes into account the most recent advances in the understanding of human pathophysiology. The book presents the complex basic principles of vascular hemodynamics and its pathophysiologie in a direct and effective way, stressing the importance of the mechanical properties of large arteries in the origin of blood pressure. The readily understandable text, supported by helpful images, describes the elements that define blood pressure and explains such important concepts as pulse wave velocity, central blood pressure, reflected waves, and pulse pressure amplification. Entirely new chapters are included on the sympathetic nervous system and arterial stiffness and on the role played by arterial stiffness in influencing blood pressure variability. The book will enable the physician to answer some of the key questions encountered when addressing the problem of arterial hypertension in everyday clinical practice: How is blood pressure generated? How should blood pressure values be interpreted? Is systolic blood pressure of greater importance than diastolic blood pressure?
Contents
1. Vascular Hemodynamics and Blood Pressure -- 2. Pulse Wave Velocity and Arterial Stiffness Assessment -- 3. Arterial Stiffness and Blood Pressure Variability -- 4 Central Blood Pressure: Part 1, pathophysiology -- 5. Central Blood Pressure: Part 2, Pulse Wave Analysis -- 6. Aortic Stiffness and Myocardial Ischemia -- 7. Arterial Stiffness in Chronic Kidney Disease -- 8. Pulse Wave Velocity and Pulse Wave Analysis in Experimental Animals.

Abstract
This new edition is devoted to a broad array of topics involving the circadian variation in cardiovascular diseases, with focuses on hypertension, stroke, and coronary disease. The volume covers clinical and device research related to home and ambulatory BP monitoring, as there have been significant advances in technology since the publication of the previous edition. In addition, there is an increased focus on the applicability of home and ambulatory BP monitoring in drug development in all therapeutic arenas. The text features contributions from chapter authors from around the world and who have great expertise in cardiovascular medicine, therapeutics, clinical trials, and evidence-based medicine. Blood Pressure Monitoring in Cardiovascular Medicine and Therapeutics, Third Edition is essential reading for a large audience, including those practicing cardiology and nephrology with a special focus in hypertension, geriatrics and internal medicine, clinical trialists, regulators in the US, Europe, and Japan, and physicians in training in cardiology, hypertension, pharmacology, nephrology and neurology.
