Abstract
This resource supports evidence-informed approaches to improving the cultural competence of health service delivery. By reviewing the evidence from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the US, it provides readers with a clear and systematic overview of the interventions and indicators applied to enable health system agencies and professionals to work effectively in various cross-cultural health care situations. The book highlights the importance of cultural competence and describes the current situation in the studied countries; identifies effective approaches and strategies for improving the situation; reviews the indicators for measuring progress; assesses the health outcomes associated with cultural competence; summarizes the quality of the evidence; and presents an evidence-informed conceptual framework for cultural competence in health. Cultural competence is critical to reducing health disparities and has become a popular concept in these countries for improving access to high-quality, respectful and responsive health care. This book provides policy makers, health practitioners, researchers and students with a much needed summary of what works to improve health systems, services and practice.

Abstract
This book is unique in its global approach to applying the Guidelines for Culturally Competent Nursing Practice that were recently endorsed by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) and distributed to all of its 130 national nursing associations. The purpose of this book is to illustrate how these guidelines can be put into clinical practice and to show how practitioners from different countries with diverse populations can implement them. The first chapter provides the conceptual basis for Culturally Competent Health Care and describes how the guidelines were developed. Each of the next 10 sections presents a chapter describing a specific guideline followed by three or four chapters with detailed case studies to illustrate how the guideline was implemented in a particular cultural setting. All case studies follow a similar format and are written by international authors with clinical expertise and work experience in the culture being presented. This book will be useful for advanced practice nurses, healthcare students, clinicians, administrators, educators, researchers, and those who provide community health or population-based care.

Abstract
This text was developed as a book aimed at surgeons and allied health professionals that provides an introduction to the unmet needs , epidemiological, socioeconomic and even political factors that frame Global Surgery. Following upon an understanding of these issues, the text is a practical guide that enables the reader on several levels: to work cross culturally , build relationships and negotiate the logistical challenges of bringing surgical care to low resource settings; to develop an approach to the management of various clinical conditions that would be unfamiliar to most "western" surgeons. Global Surgery is a recently coined term that encompasses many potential meanings. Most would agree that it focuses on the growing recognition of the crisis of access to quality surgical care in low resource settings. Such scenarios exist on every continent. Increasingly surgeons, allied health professionals (NGO), Public Health / Health Policy professionals as well as governmental and non-governmental organizations are engaging in this field. Many surgeons have an interest in Global Health and a desire to become involved but feel ill equipped to do so and unsure where to start. Global Surgery: The Essentials serves as a ready resource to equip surgeons to manage clinical scenarios that lie beyond the scope of their training or current practice but that they would reasonably be expected to encounter in the field.

Abstract
This concise, easy-to-read book tackles the potentially awkward subject of culture in a direct, non-intimidating style. It prepares all health professionals in any clinical setting to conduct thorough assessments of individual from culturally specific population groups, making it especially valuable in today's team-oriented healthcare environment. The book is suitable for healthcare workers in all fields, particularly nurses who interact with the patients 24 hours a day, every day of the week. Based on the Purnell Model for Cultural Competence, it explores 26 different cultures and the issues that healthcare professionals need to be sensitive to. For each group, the book includes an overview of heritage, communication styles, family roles and organization, workforce issues, biocultural ecology, high-risk health behaviors, nutrition, pregnancy and child bearing, death rituals, spirituality, healthcare practices, and the views of healthcare providers. It also discusses the variant characteristics of culture that determine the diversity of values, beliefs, and practices in an individual's cultural heritage in order to help prevent stereotyping. These characteristics include age, generation, nationality, race, color, gender, religion, educational status, socioeconomic status, occupation, military status, political beliefs, urban versus rural residence, enclave identity, marital status, parental status, physical characteristics, sexual orientation, gender issues, health literacy, and reasons for migration. Each chapter offers specific instructions, guidelines, tips, intervention strategies, and approaches specific to a particular cultural population.

Abstract
This book is intended to sensitise psychotherapists, to strengthen practitioners’ intercultural competence and to encourage them to form psychotherapeutic relationships with people with an immigration background who are suffering from mental health problems. In this context, intercultural psychotherapy refers to the therapeutic work between psychotherapists and patients who hail from different cultural contexts, which often considerably hampers language- and culture-based understanding. In the current context of globalisation and growing crises around the world, an increasing number of people with a migration background require psychotherapeutic treatment as a result, intercultural psychotherapy may well become the rule rather than the exception. Psychotherapists are therefore challenged to adapt to such a context. Overcoming these barriers requires certain competencies such as working with a qualified interpreter. Contributions from international experts from the field of intercultural psychotherapy provide vital insights into the theory and practice of intercultural work with patients suffering from conditions such as PTSD, depression, anxiety, personality disorders and schizophrenic disorders. These interdisciplinary specialists describe their work, share valuable lessons learned, and put forward concrete recommendations.

Abstract
This open access book offers essential information on values-based practice (VBP): the clinical skills involved, teamwork and person-centered care, links between values and evidence, and the importance of partnerships in shared decision-making. Different cultures have different values; for example, partnership in decision-making looks very different, from the highly individualized perspective of European and North American cultures to the collective and family-oriented perspectives common in South East Asia. In turn, African cultures offer yet another perspective, one that falls between these two extremes (called batho pele). The book will benefit everyone concerned with the practical challenges of delivering mental health services. Accordingly, all contributions are developed on the basis of case vignettes, and cover a range of situations in which values underlie tensions or uncertainties regarding how to proceed in clinical practice. Examples include the patient’s autonomy and best interest, the physician’s commitment to establishing high standards of clinical governance, clinical versus community best interest, institutional versus clinical interests, patients insisting on medically unsound but legal treatments etc. Thus far, VBP publications have mainly dealt with clinical scenarios involving individual values (of clinicians and patients). Our objective with this book is to develop a model of VBP that is culturally much broader in scope. As such, it offers a vital resource for mental health stakeholders in an increasingly inter-connected world. It also offers opportunities for cross-learning in values-based practice between cultures with very different clinical care traditions.

Abstract
This title is an easy-to-read guide outlining specific differences in communication, clinical therapies, medications, protocols, and other critical approaches to the care of African Americans. The book discusses a wide range of disorders impacting African Americans and takes a comprehensive and evidence-based approach to the clinical support of providers that see African American patients. Recording the worst medical outcomes of any racial/ethnic group in America, African Americans have the highest mortality, longest hospital length of stay, worst compliance with medications and referrals, and the lowest trust of the healthcare system. Indeed, there are countless well-designed studies that validate verified differences in the clinical care of a number of pervasive diseases in African Americans, including hypertension, heart disease, kidney disease, obesity, cancer, and more. Despite the widespread acknowledgement of the existence of health disparities among racial/ethnic groups, the overall outcomes for African Americans are still the most shocking. From high infant mortality to death by almost any cause, African Americans have the worst data of any other racial or ethnic group. Patient-Centered Clinical Care for African Americans, a highly practical and first-of-its-kind title, illuminates these alarming issues and represents a major contribution to the clinical literature. It will be of significant interest to all physicians, clinicians, and allied health personnel.

Abstract
This book provides a comprehensive review of the complex, growing mental health challenges faced by culturally diverse populations of children and adolescents. Suicide Among Diverse Youth: A Case-Based Guidebookáis the first book of its kind, and is designed specifically to bridge the knowledge and skills gap encountered by most clinicians dealing with youth from diverse cultural backgrounds, particularly those different than that of the clinician. The title begins with two introductory chapters, which cover cultural aspects of suicidality among youth, culturally informed treatment of suicidality with diverse youth, and exampl es of preventative approaches. These are followed by population specific chapters which cover a broad spectrum of diverse populations, including underserved ethnic and racial populations in the United States, LGBTQ youth, as well as various immigrant populations from Eastern European and Middle Eastern countries. These case-based chapters are structured in a cohesive, easy-to-read format that promotes ease of reference, beginning with a clinical case report, review of literature, unique characteristics and risk factors associated with suicidality, and evidence-based practice provided by the authors from their considerable experience. The authors are often from the same ethnic, racial, or cultural group that they discuss in their writings; providing experiential knowledge where scientific knowledge is lacking. Suicide Among Diverse Youth: A Case-Based Guidebook is a unique resource that offers the clinical material needed to treat diverse adolescent patients with sensitive, intersectional, and culturally-informed care, and will provide an indispensable resource for medical professionals working with, and caring for these patients.
