- Cardiac implantable device (CIED) infections are a key issue since they have serious consequences in terms of morbidity, mortality and associated costs for healthcare systems. Such infections are highly complex, which has implications for prevention (several factors underlie its development), diagnosis (requiring patient specific integration of several elements), acute treatment (choice of the antibiotic, lead extraction procedure), as well as long-term management (CIED re-implantation strategy and follow-up). Dealing with CIED infections requires appropriate organization of healthcare provision, with the creation of integrated hub-spoke referrals, and it has prompted many of the recent developments in CIED technologies: leadless pacemakers, subcutaneous defibrillators, antibacterial envelops and lead extraction devices. This book systematically examines all aspects of this multifaceted condition, discussing each clinical and organizational issue in a separate self-contained chapter. It starts by reviewing the epidemiology/pathophysiology of CIED infections, and then addresses acute and long-term management. Offering a comprehensive overview of the prevention of infections, considering both current and future perspectives, the book also provides practical suggestions along with recommendations from the literature in the field. This is the first book entirely focused on CIED infections. - Cet appareil détecte et corrige les battements de cœur dangereusement rapides qui commencent dans la partie inférieure du cœur. Le présent livret traite de la façon dont votre cœur bat, des symptômes courants, de ce qu’est un défibrillateur cardioverteur implantable ou DCI (parfois appelé défibrillateur automatique implantable ou DAI), de son fonctionnement et des différents types de traitement. Vous apprendrez comment vous préparer pour l’implantation de l’appareil. Les soins que vous recevrez durant les premières 24 heures suivant la chirurgie y sont décrits, de même que les activités à éviter au cours des six à huit semaines qui suivront. Vous devrez porter un bracelet MedicAlert®. Les mesures pertinentes à prendre si vous recevez un choc sont précisées, de même que les soins se rattachant à l’incision et les signes d’infection. Il est aussi question de l’utilisation des appareils électriques. Appelez le 911 si vous ressentez les symptômes suivants : impression d’évanouissement imminent, étourdissements, palpitations ou battements de cœur très rapides.
- This is a French translation of the English pamphlet, 0241, "Living with your implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD)". This device finds and corrects dangerously fast heart rates that start in the bottom part of the heart. Topics include: how your heart beats, common symptoms, what an ICD is and how it works, and different treatment types. You will learn how to get ready to have the device inserted. Your care during the first 24 hours after surgery is described as well as activities to avoid in the next 6-8 weeks. You will need to have a MedicAlert® bracelet. The appropriate action to take if you ever receive a shock is given. Care of your incision and signs of an infection are listed. The use of electrical equipment is discussed. Call 911 if you have any of the following symptoms: feeling faint, dizziness, heart fluttering, or heart racing.
