There is a particular focus on the available surgical and nonsurgical methods of retreatment designed to restore healthy periapical conditions. Alternatives to retreatment are also explored, including a conservative approach involving monitoring of the diseased tooth without intervention and the option of extraction and replacement with an implant or a fixed prosthesis. The goal of root canal treatment is to save the natural tooth even when tissue breakdown has resulted in pathological conditions of the pulp and periradicular tissue. However, population studies reveal that complete healing is often absent in root-filled teeth, and apical periodontitis is frequently observed in conjunction with root fillings of poor technical quality. Under these circumstances, questions arise as to how the apical periodontitis is impacting on the patient and how the condition should be tackled. Readers will find this well-illustrated book to be of great value in directing clinical practice.

- This book examines all aspects of the progress being made towards the development of highly specific and sensitive biomarkers that will overcome the shortcomings of clinical assessments in periodontics. The opening chapters present the basic anatomic features of periodontal tissues, outline the nature and pathogenic mechanisms of periodontal diseases, and discuss both conventional and novel methods of diagnosis with reference to their specificity and sensitivity. The potential role of biomarkers in periodontal diagnosis is then presented in the light of the published data. The biological samples in which potential biomarkers are sought are evaluated comparatively, drawing attention to their strengths and weaknesses, and the available technologies for biomarker studies are reviewed. The potential benefits of biomarkers are also discussed with regard to the possible bidirectional interactions between periodontal diseases and systemic health. Finally, the past, present, and future of periodontics are examined from a broader perspective. - Bisphosphonates are commonly prescribed to inhibit bone loss in patients with osteoporosis, as well as osteopenia, cancer, and Paget's disease of the bone. Recently, scientific literature has addressed a possible relationship between bisphosphonates and osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). It is important to note that though the risks for developing ONJ are much higher for cancer patients on intravenous bisphosphonate therapy (used to reduce bone pain), the occurrence of ONJ also in patients treated with oral BF for osteoporosis has been also highlighted, though rarely. On the basis of the large use of BF, of their pharmacokinetics, of the systemic and local risk factors, physicians prescribing them and dental surgeons should be well informed on the various aspects of the problem. Aim of this volume is to offer an update on the current status of prevention, and on the current conservative and surgical treatments. The multidisciplinary approach will be very much appreciated by GP's, the different specialists using bisphosphonates and by dental surgeons.
