Abstract
This book goes beyond the traditional approaches to drug use and discusses the issue from a societal perspective, integrating contributions from different disciplines such as psychology, public health, anthropology, law, public policies and sociology to address specifically the social aspects of the phenomenon. Given its complexity, drug use demands a multidisciplinary approach from many different perspectives, but despite the vast literature about the topic, the majority of the books are restricted either to a purely medical perspective (focused mainly on treatment techniques) or to a criminological perspective (focused mainly on drug trafficking and organized crime). The social approach adopted in this volume challenges this dichotomy and analyzes both the social contexts to which drug use is related and the social and political consequences of the attitudes and policies adopted by governments and other social groups towards drug users, addressing topics such as: Drugs and poverty; Drugs and gender; Drugs and race; Drugs and territory; Stigmatization of drug use; Prohibitionism. Given its broad and innovative approach, Drugs and Social Context - Social Perspectives on the Use of Alcohol and Other Drugs will be of interest for researchers, clinicians and other health professionals, since the study of the social aspects of drug use is central to everyone who deals with the issue.
Contents
Drugs and society -- 1. The context of drug use in the consumer society -- 2. The stigmatization of drug use as mechanism of legitimation of exclusion -- 3. Social effects of prohibitionism in the Americas and new drug policies -- Social issues -- 4. Drugs and poverty: interfaces of oppression in the capitalist world -- 5. Drugs and gender -- 6. Drugs and race -- 7. (Des)Occupation of urban and rural spaces, gentrification and drug use.

Abstract
Harm reduction is an increasingly recognized approach to the management of substance abuse and other behaviors that may pose serious health risks. Rather than defining drug use as a disease or a moral failing, harm reduction proponents stake out a humane and practical alternative: meeting clients "where they are at" to help them understand the risks involved in their behaviors and make appropriate decisions about their own treatment goals. The first major text on harm reduction, this timely volume explains the model's rationale and examines a range of applications in diverse communities. Insight is also offered into the often contentious philosophical and policy-related debates surrounding this growing movement. Up-to-date and informative, this book provides indispensable information for front-line drug and alcohol treatment providers, AIDS educators, and community health activists. Students and professionals in public health, clinical and health psychology, psychiatry, primary care, counseling, and social work will also find it an invaluable resource, as will readers interested in drug policy and the law.
Contents
I. Overview of harm reduction -- Highlights of harm reduction : a personal report from the first national harm reduction conference in the United States -- Harm reduction around the world : a brief history -- Basic principles and strategies of harm reduction -- II. Applications to addictive behaviors and high-risk sexual behaviors -- Harm reduction for alcohol problems : expanding access to and acceptability of prevention and treatment services -- Harm reduction, nicotine, and smoking -- Harm reduction strategies for illicit substance use and abuse -- Harm reduction and HIV/AIDS prevention -- III. Matching strategies to diverse ethnic communities -- Bringing harm reduction to the Black community : there's a fire in my house and you're telling me to rearrange my furniture? -- Alcohol use and harm reduction within the Native community -- IV. Can harm reduction play a role in U.S. drug policy? -- Harm reduction and public policy.
