Abstract
This contributed book is the first to focus on the Clinical Learning Environment and Supervision (CLES) framework. The origin instrument version of the CLES-scale has been published in Finland in 2002, and has generated wide European and International interest. The CLES network has pursued Europe-wide research. This book brings a unique perspective of students' clinical practicum in healthcare education and discusses how the national quality system can be used in the continual development of student supervisory systems. The book first presents the theoretical and practical principles of clinical learning, then defines the challenges of clinical learning for mentorship, clinical staff and nurse teachers. This volume also offers examples of the benefits and future perspectives of the CLES framework in healthcare education. It is aimed at researchers and clinical professionals who contribute to students' clinical learning at universities and healthcare organisations. It is especially suitable as a learning tool for clinical staff mentorship training courses and master's level healthcare education studies.
Contents
Introduction and concept definitions -- Part I: Clinical learning environment: theoretical and practical principles -- The main elements of clinical learning in healthcare education -- Methodological issues and development process of the CLES scales -- Country validation of the CLES-scale; linguistic and cultural perspectives -- The CLES scale as a national quality tool for clinical learning and teaching -- Part II: Ensuring the high quality of a clinical learning environment -- A good clinical learning environment as an organisational challenge -- Empowering the professionalization of nurses trough mentorship: implementation of the CLES framework in an international project -- Cooperation between the clinical staff and the clinical teacher -- Part III: The CLES framework: new perspectives and areas for development -- How can patient relationships and patient experiences be better utilised in student's clinical learning? -- New ways and environments of using the CLES framework -- Possibilities of e-learning and new information technologies in clinical teaching.

Abstract
The book presents five significant areas of learning within professional programmes of preparation most applicable to student nurses and midwives in their pre-registration education but also with relevance to other learners on healthcare related disciplines. This volume has emerged from several sources: the editor’s role as a Director for Learning and Teaching in Adult, Child Nursing and Midwifery and also from an EU funded project looking at quality benchmarks and assuring clinical learning environments (HEALINT). The Francis Report (Francis 2013) and the Shape of Caring Report (Willis 2015) highlighted challenges related to practice learning and mark a renewed focus in its overall significance (Morley et al 2017). In addition to discussions regarding models of support in practice, there is also a clear emphasis on the need for nurses to have the knowledge and skills to undertake more flexible roles and an increasing requirement for nurses to have higher order knowledge and skills at the point of registration, according to the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC 2017). The book will meet these new educational needs especially for educators working in Nurse and Midwife colleges. The new standards of proficiency for pre-registration nursing were published in 2018, with all higher education institutions (HEIs) approved to deliver the programme from September 2019. This creates a demand for a publication which explores the potential impact of a new education approach and issues with preparation (teaching and learning) for nurses and the breadth and dimensions of teaching and learning. NMC proposed roles of Practice Supervisor, Practice Assessor and Academic Assessor will not have a prescribed preparation programme and universities and practice partners will be seeking guidance and direction in developing local programmes of preparation.
Contents
1. Pedagogy for nursing: challenging traditional theories -- 2. Learning in partnership -- 3. Clinical learning environments -- 4. Supervising, supporting learning and coaching -- 5. Inclusive learning, diversity, and nurse education -- 6. Innovative approaches to nurse teaching and learning.
