Abstract
This book will enable the reader to gain a sound understanding of contemporary and futuristic evidence-based interventions and assessment procedures for pelvic floor disorders. It gathers the experiences of some of the most important experts on electrical stimulation techniques, offering a multidisciplinary and problem-oriented approach organized according to therapeutic goals. Interventions are recommended that are consistent with theory and display clinical efficacy for specific disorders, including urinary incontinence or retention, fecal incontinence, constipation, pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction, and neurological diseases involving the pelvic floor. All of the surgical or rehabilitative techniques requiring electrical stimulation for the treatment of these disorders are explored, and essential background information is provided on functional anatomy, neurophysiology, and concepts in electrotherapy. This volume will be a very useful tool for urologists, general or colorectal surgeons, gynecologists, and anesthesiologists, and also physiotherapists and alternative medicine practitioners (a specific chapter focuses on electroacupuncture).
Contents
1. Electrotherapy for Pelvic Floor Disorders: Historical Background -- 2. Functional Anatomy of the Pelvic Floor -- 3. Neurophysiology and Neurophysiological Evaluation of the Pelvic Floor -- 4. Basic Concepts in Electricity and Electrotherapy -- 5. Acupuncture for Pelvic Floor Disorders -- 6. Electrical Stimulation, Biofeedback, and Other Rehabilitative Techniques -- 7. Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) in Micturition Disorders -- 8. Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation -- 9. Tibial Nerve Stimulation -- 10. Abstract
Pelvic Floor Dysfunction: A Multidisciplinary Approach provides the most up-to-date and comprehensive aspects of evaluation and therapy of female pelvic floor dysfunction. The book is edited by well-known international surgeons who have clinical practices within one tertiary referral institution, the Pelvic Floor Center at Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston (Fort Lauderdale), Florida. All of the contributing authors are staff clinicians at the Cleveland Clinic in the Cleveland, Ohio, Weston, Florida, or Naples, Florida campuses. Recognized by clinicians worldwide for its excellence in this clinical area, Cleveland Clinic departments of Gynecology, Urology, and Colorectal Surgery have combined their expertise in producing this text. The importance of a team approach to the evaluation and management of Pelvic Floor problems is emphasized. Pelvic Floor Dysfunction: A Multidisciplinary Approach is focused on urinary incontinence and other voiding dysfunctions, fecal incontinence and other distal gastroenterologic problems, genital and rectal prolapse, and other recognized pelvic floor problems. Since the Pelvic Floor encompasses all the organs within the pelvic cavity, this work is essential reading for the practicing Gynecologist/Urogynecologist, Urologist, and Colorectal Surgeon.

Abstract
The second edition of Pelvic Floor Re-education provides a comprehensive overview of the subject, along with other aspects of the clinical assessment and management of pelvic floor disorders. Starting with the latest theories on the anatomy, pathophysiology, and possible causes of pelvic floor damage, the importance of pelvic floor evaluation is looked at in order to determine the type of treatment required. Practical techniques of muscle assessment and investigative methodologies are reviewed and up-to-date information on anatomy and physiology is discussed. An algorithmic approach takes the reader through the options for clinical evaluation and treatment. Several re-education techniques are assessed for pelvic floor dysfunction, including isolated muscle exercise, vagina cones, biofeedback control, and electrical stimulation. This practical book is invaluable reading for all healthcare professionals working with incontinent patients, particularly urogynecologists, obstetricians, gynecologists, and physiotherapists. It also provides a comprehensive but readable source for residents and trainees interested in the scientific and clinical fundamentals of pelvic floor re-education.
