Abstract
Atlas of Conducted Electrical Weapon Wounds and Forensic Analysis provides a comprehensive publication on the subject of Conducted Electrical Weapon (CEW) wounds and signature markings created by this class of weapon. This volume will serve as a very useful resource for all professions tasked with assisting persons that have allegedly been subjected to a CEW exposure. The volume provides an introduction to basic CEW technology and the types of CEWs currently available. It also serves as a comprehensive pictorial atlas of signature markings that CEW exposures make in the immediate and more remote post-exposure periods. Also, it discusses the ability of forensic specialty examinations of the CEW itself to aid in the determination of whether the alleged CEW exposure is consistent with the objective evidence and the subjective statements. Finally, this text addresses the important and growing area of factitious CEW markings that will be useful for consideration by investigators and litigators. Atlas of Conducted Electrical Weapon Wounds and Forensic Analysis provides an objective atlas of evidence for reference that will benefit those professionals who often must make diagnostic, treatment or legal judgments on these cases including Emergency and Primary-Care Physicians, Medical Examiners, Forensic Pathologists, Coroners, Law Enforcement Investigators, and Attorneys.
Contents
1. The Conducted Electrical Weapon: Historical Overview of the Technology -- 2. Physics of Electrical Injury -- 3. Conducted Electrical Weapon Deployed Probe Wounds -- 4. Conducted Electrical Weapon Drive-Stun Wounds -- 5. Histopathology of Cutaneous Conducted Electrical Weapon Injuries -- 6. Extended Range Conducted Electrical Weapon Wounds -- 7. Factitious Conducted Electrical Weapon Wounds: Injuries and Considerations -- 8. Legal Aspects of Conducted Electrical Weapon Injuries, Wounds, and Effects -- 9. Abstract
Basic Principles of Forensic Chemistry is designed to provide a clear and concise understanding of forensic chemistry. The text begins with an introduction to the basic principles of chemistry and expands through organic chemistry into forensic investigation. The detailed chapters focus on both the theoretical and practical aspects of forensic chemistry with emphasis on controlled substance testing and identification. Leading experts in the field contribute general examination techniques followed by applications to more specific models. In addition, the text contains a comprehensive collection of information and data on controlled substances commonly encountered in forensic investigation including; detailed structural analysis, physical and physiological effects, functional group reactivity, and results of analytical examination. Also illustrated is arguably the greatest challenge to the forensic chemist: the investigation and processing of clandestine laboratory operations. The Forensic Chemistry Laboratory Manual is included on a CD-ROM and contains a collection of practical exercises designed to support theoretical principles covered in the text. This provides the student with valuable hands-on experience while adding clarity and continuity to the topics of discussion. Essential and comprehensive, Basic Principles of Forensic Chemistry provides the fundamental knowledge required for a rewarding journey into the field of forensic chemistry.
Contents
I. Introduction to forensic chemistry -- Introduction -- Atomic structure -- Molecules -- Organic chemistry -- II. Tools of forensic chemistry -- Forensic language -- Forensic documentation -- Chemical screening -- Microcrystal techniques -- Chemical extractions and sample properties -- Chromatography and mass spectrometry -- Infrared spectroscopy -- III. Examination of drugs/narcotics -- Cannabis -- Phenethylamines -- Tertiary amines -- Tryptamines -- Anabolic steroids -- Miscellaneous controlled substances -- IV. Forensic medicine
Abstract
Increased public awareness of traumatic brain injuries has fueled a number of significant developments: on the one hand, more funding and more research related to these injuries and their resulting deficits; on the other, the possibility of higher stakes in personal injury suits - and more reasons for individuals to feign injury. Expanding both the conceptual and clinical knowledge base on the subject, the second edition of Detection of Malingering during Head Injury Litigation offers the latest detection tools and techniques for veteran and novice alike. As in its incarnation, this practical revision demonstrates how to combine clinical expertise, carefully-gathered data, and the use of actuarial models as well as common sense in making sound evaluations and reducing ambiguous results. And, the book navigates the reader through the many caveats that come with the job, beginning with the scenario that an individual may be malingering despite having an actual brain injury. Professional neuropsychologists and forensic psychologists will appreciate this new edition of Detection of Malingering during Head Injury Litigation as an invaluable source of refinements to their craft, and improvement as an expert witness.
