Glucose is a type of sugar. It is your baby's most important source of energy. This pamphlet answers frequently asked questions you may have about your baby's blood glucose checks. It explains which babies need these checks and how checks are done. Normal blood glucose levels are listed. This pamphlet also gives information on preventing and treating low blood glucose levels. The French version of this pamphlet 1966, "Surveillance de la glycémie chez les nouveau-nés", is also available.

Babies with congenital heart defects may have poor feeding and weight gain because of congestive heart failure (CHF). Medications called diuretics may help reduce the amount of fluid in the veins and lungs.Increasing the calories in baby's milk, and finding ways to reduce baby's work of feeding can also help.

Small amounts of early breastmilk (colostrum) provides protection for babies born premature or ill. Colostrum is produced by the breast tissue in late pregnancy and provides baby’s first milk. Colostrum is rich in nutrients and contains antibodies that guard against disease. OIT is provided to all babies who are not feeding. It will be your baby’s first immunity that only you can provide.
