Jaundice is a condition that causes the skin to appear yellow. It occurs when bilirubin builds up in the blood. During phototherapy to treat jaundice, your baby's skin is exposed to special light. The skin absorbs the light and changes the bilirubin so that his body can more easily get rid of it in stool and urine.
