Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency is a worldwide problem and many associations with diseases are being discovered. Recently, there has been an interest in the role that vitamin D plays in the inception and progression of lung disease. Vitamin D and the Lung: Mechanisms and Disease Associations delivers a concise, evidence-based review of the evidence for a role of vitamin D in various lung disorders. Divided into three sections, the first section of the book delivers a review of how vitamin D deficiency emerged in human populations, and gives a perspective on how humans evolved to maximize the efficiency of production of vitamin D. The second section of the book reviews aspects of vitamin D mechanisms on different immune cells, lung tissue, and genetics that have potential impact on lung disease. The third section follows with chapters on associations of vitamin D with the risk for viral infections, asthma and allergies, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, tuberculosis, and finally, lung cancer with an emphasis on ongoing research and clinical issues and needs for future research in each field. Written by an international group of expert authors, Vitamin D and the Lung: Mechanisms and Disease Associations is an essential text for researchers in the respiratory field and practicing clinicians including internists, pulmonologists, and primary care personnel.

Abstract
As a result of the rapidly growing rate of obesity worldwide, clinicians are struggling to provide the best strategies for treating obese patients with concomitant pulmonary conditions. Obesity does not simply change the epidemiology of pulmonary disease; obesity has a profound impact on the pathophysiology of common pulmonary diseases. Obesity affects the severity of asthma, response to treatment, and is likely a major modifier of the phenotype of asthma. Obesity also appears to affect response to pathogens, and as such has a major influence on response to pneumonia, and has a significant impact on outcomes pertaining to acute lung injury in the intensive care unit. Obesity and Lung Disease: A Guide to Management is the first text in the field to cover the full range of issues related to managing obese patients with pulmonary problems. All the relevant conditions, in the context of obesity, are covered, including airway inflammation, sleep apnea, asthma, pulmonary hypertension, obesity hypoventilation, as well as others. Written by an international group of experts, this important new volume is an invaluable resource for all clinicians and scientists concerned with the challenging problems surrounding obesity and lung diseases.

Abstract
This book addresses the pulmonary and non-pulmonary manifestations related to exposure to airborne hazards after the collapse of the World Trade Center. Leading experts consider both short and long term effects on survivors, first responders, and residents of surrounding areas and offer clinical practice guidelines for treatment. Respiratory complications are the most obvious manifestation, but the text additionally covers oncology, psychiatry, and other organ systems for both adults and children. Knowledge of the medical ramifications from the World Trade Center collapse has broad scientific applicability to occupational and environmental medicine, preventive medicine, and epidemiology. With the advent of bioterrorism since 9/11, understanding prevention, treatment, monitoring, and basic and clinical research aspects of particulate matter air pollution is relevant and critically important to being a medical provider. This book will prove useful to pulmonologists, primary care providers, epidemiologists, psychiatrists, occupational and environmental specialists, allergists, immunologists, toxicologists and public policy experts.
