Abstract
Adopting a truly global perspective and a practical approach to diabetes--including pathophysiology, genetics, regional peculiarities, management, prevention and best practices--this book is an excellent resource for clinicians and policy-makers working with patients in more austere settings. The global prevalence of diabetes is estimated to increase from 422 million in 2014 to 592 million in 2035. Sadly, low- and middle-economy countries are projected to experience the steepest increase, but even in developed economies, vulnerable demographic subgroups manifest disparities in diabetes prevalence, quality of care, and outcomes. This book extends coverage to those underserved and minority communities in the developed world. In a consistent chapter format, it discusses classification, pathophysiology, genomics, diagnosis, prevention and management of diabetes in economically challenged regions as well as underserved populations in affluent nations. Suggestions regarding future directions in the organization of diabetes care delivery, prevention and research priorities are also provided. The detailed identification of barriers to optimal care and the practical approach to the management and prevention of diabetes make Diabetes Mellitus in Developing Countries and Underserved Communities a valuable resource for clinicians, researchers and health policy leaders.

Abstract
This text was developed as a book aimed at surgeons and allied health professionals that provides an introduction to the unmet needs , epidemiological, socioeconomic and even political factors that frame Global Surgery. Following upon an understanding of these issues, the text is a practical guide that enables the reader on several levels: to work cross culturally , build relationships and negotiate the logistical challenges of bringing surgical care to low resource settings; to develop an approach to the management of various clinical conditions that would be unfamiliar to most "western" surgeons. Global Surgery is a recently coined term that encompasses many potential meanings. Most would agree that it focuses on the growing recognition of the crisis of access to quality surgical care in low resource settings. Such scenarios exist on every continent. Increasingly surgeons, allied health professionals (NGO), Public Health / Health Policy professionals as well as governmental and non-governmental organizations are engaging in this field. Many surgeons have an interest in Global Health and a desire to become involved but feel ill equipped to do so and unsure where to start. Global Surgery: The Essentials serves as a ready resource to equip surgeons to manage clinical scenarios that lie beyond the scope of their training or current practice but that they would reasonably be expected to encounter in the field.

Abstract
This book covers the complexity of diabetes and related complications and presents the socio-economic burden of the disease, taking into account the rising prevalence reaching pandemic proportions and the associated costs. Factors causing high diabetes prevalence and the influence of the pharmaceutical industry are evaluated and solutions for sustainable diabetes care with limited resources are provided, including national focus on providing cost-effective diabetes treatment, nutrition and physical activity, structured diabetes education and centralized National e-Health System. Moreover, elaboration of long-term efforts to curb the diabetes burden through prevention activities are presented in this book. Managing Diabetes in Low Income Countries represents an essential guide for diabetes care clinicians and researchers, medical students and clinicians in training, diabetes policy makers, regulatory authorities, international diabetes and patient organisations all of whom are involved in current clinical practice for diabetes management.

Abstract
Orthopaedic trauma represents 75% of the casualties in a disaster. Many of these patients will be cared for by international volunteers. Unfortunately, good intentions are not always matched by good preparation, often resulting in further complications for patients. This book has been written by a team of international experts with extensive experience of field missions to the most precarious and austere environments in the world, such as Afghanistan, Sierra Leone, Haiti, and Syria. After reading the text, volunteers will be able to face situations that are confusing, chaotic, and distressing with a greater sense of direction and confidence. Health care workers involved in the care of the traumatized patient will find in the book answers and guidance that will help them to negotiate their way through the myriad of unfamiliar cases they will face in the field. The text is divided into sections, each addressing a theme: definition of the austere environment, how best to prepare for missions, how to deal with injuries in austere conditions, how to ensure a positive legacy, and the need for cultural, political, and legal awareness. All of the most common orthopaedic presentations encountered in the austere environment are covered. In addition to evidence-based research, cases and actual experiences from the authors' missions are included to illustrate and bring to life key points.
Contents

Abstract
The second, fully updated edition of this book applies and contextualizes up-to-date information on pediatric surgery for low and middle-income countries (LMICs). The book is organized in general anatomic and thematic sections within pediatric surgery, such as urology, oncology, orthopedics and gastroenterology and includes chapters addressing the unique challenges and approaches for pediatric surgery in low-resource settings. Each chapter has dual authorship LMIC author providing context-specific insights and authors from high-income countries (HICs) contributing experience from well-resourced settings. Written in a reader-friendly format, this book has a uniform structure in each chapter, with introduction, demographics, etiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentations, investigations, management, outcome, prevention, ethics, evidence-based surgery and references. This comprehensive volume fills the gap between up-to-date pediatric surgical scholarship and knowledge developed and applied in HICs, and the practical needs of practitioners in low-resource settings. This is an indispensable guide for postgraduate surgical trainees in Africa and other LMICs as well as general surgeons practicing in Africa and other LMICs, who need to care surgically for children.

Abstract
This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. It constitutes a unique source of knowledge and guidance for all healthcare workers who care for patients with sepsis and septic shock in resource-limited settings. More than eighty percent of the worldwide deaths related to sepsis occur in resource-limited settings in low and middle-income countries. Current international sepsis guidelines cannot be implemented without adaptations towards these settings, mainly because of the difference in local resources and a different spectrum of infectious diseases causing sepsis. This prompted members of the Global Intensive Care working group of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) and the Mahidol-Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit (MORU, Bangkok, Thailand) - among which the Editors – to develop with an international group of experts a comprehensive set of recommendations for the management of sepsis in resource-limited settings. Recommendations are based on both current scientific evidence and clinical experience of clinicians working in resource-limited settings. The book includes an overview chapter outlining the current challenges and future directions of sepsis management as well as general recommendations on the structure and organization of intensive care services in resource-limited settings. Specific recommendations on the recognition and management of patients with sepsis and septic shock in these settings are grouped into seven chapters. The book provides evidence-based practical guidance for doctors in low and middle income countries treating patients with sepsis, and highlights areas for further research and discussion.
