Abstract
This book is designed to re-establish the position of the oral cavity and its mucosa at the forefront of defence and maintenance of homeostatic mechanisms that protect against disease not just locally but also systemically. The oral mucosa is a unique collection of tissues that constitutes a highly active environment with its own unique microflora and homeostatic interaction with the innate and adaptive immune responses. As an immune tissue the oral mucosa was somewhat neglected in the past owing to the tendency to assume similarity to the gut mucosa. More recently it has become apparent that the oral mucosa is a complex environment and, like the esophageal mucosa, has more in common with vaginal tissue than with the gut. Furthermore, the ability of the oral mucosa to act as an immune inductive site has made it an attractive area of research in terms of desensitization for allergic reactions and possibly autoimmune responses. In this book, recognized experts in the field provide up-to-date coverage of all aspects of the structure and function of the oral mucosa, reflecting important recent advances in knowledge, including at the molecular level.
Contents
1. Structure and Functions of the Oral Mucosa -- 2. Cell-Cell Interactions in the Oral Mucosa: Tight Junctions and Gap Junctions -- 3. Anchoring Junctions in the Oral Mucosa: Adherens Junctions and Desmosomes -- 4. Immunology of the Oral Mucosa -- 5. Mucosal Homeostasis of the Oral Mucosa -- 6. Wound Healing in the Oral Mucosa -- 7. Saliva and Gingival Crevicular Fluid: Contributions to Mucosal Defense -- 8. Oral Cancer: Recent Developments and Future Challenges -- 9. Epigenetics in the Oral Cavity -- 10. Infections of the Oral Mucosa and Immune Responses -- 11. Non-infectious Diseases of the Oral Mucosa: The Importance of Immune Functions -- 12. Abstract
This book provides a comprehensive overview of oral signs of a broad spectrum of systemic diseases including gastrointestinal, hematologic, and endocrine, in addition to infectious, nutritional, autoimmune, genetic and connective tissue diseases. An overview of associated key signs and salient features to look for on oral exam is provided as well as other clinical manifestations, differential diagnoses, and treatment recommendations. The mouth is an important anatomical location with a role in many critical physiologic processes that are frequently involved in conditions that affect the skin or other organ systems. In many instances, oral manifestations of a disease precede the appearance of other stigmata. Therefore, early recognition of oral signs and symptoms associated with underlying systemic diseases can be invaluable to the clinician in establishing a diagnosis and prompt initiation of therapy. This book, written for dermatologists, dentists, otolaryngologists, and oral medicine specialists, offers a structured approach to the therapy and management of diseases affecting the oral mucosa.
Contents
1. Introduction -- 2. Oral Signs of Gastrointestinal Disease -- 3. Oral Signs of Hematologic Disease -- 4. Oral Signs of Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases -- 5. Oral Signs of Nutritional Disease -- 6.
