Abstract
This book offers up-to-date information on the recording and analysis of respiratory sounds that will assist in clinical routine. The opening sections deliver basic knowledge on aspects such as the physics of sound and sound transmission in the body, a clear understanding of which is key to good clinical practice. Current techniques of breath sound analysis are described, and the diagnostic impact of advances in the processing of lung sound signals is carefully explained. With the aid of audio files that are available online, detailed guidance is then provided on differentiation of normal and abnormal breath sounds and identification of the various sounds, including crackles, wheezes, other lung sounds, cough sounds, and sounds of extrathoracic origin. The book is of high educational value and represents an excellent learning tool at pre- and postgraduate levels. It will also appeal to researchers as it provides comprehensive summaries of knowledge in particular research fields. The editors bring high-level expertise to the subject, including membership of the European Respiratory Society Task Force on the standardization of categories and nomenclature for breath sounds.
Contents
1. Introduction -- Part I. General Consideration -- 2. The Stethoscope: Historical Considerations -- 3. Clinical Usefulness of Breath Sounds -- 4. Breath Sounds in Epidemiology -- 5. Abstract
This well-illustrated book provides detailed guidance on all aspects of physical examination in patients requiring emergency or intensive care. After an introductory section covering basic principles and the recognition of pre-terminal signs, the approach to examination of individual organ systems is clearly explained. Examination schemes are then presented for particular conditions or settings, including respiratory distress, shock, neurological disease, trauma, suspected infection, and cardiac arrest. The skill of physical examination has become the forgotten art of medicine in both undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Furthermore, most books on the topic have so far focused on examination practices applicable to non-critically ill patients. In emergency and intensive care medicine, however, a different approach and sometimes also different examination techniques are required due to the life-threatening disease process. In summarizing knowledge and providing guidance on physical examination in this specific subgroup of patients, this book will meet the needs of all physicians and allied health care professionals involved in the care of critically ill patients.
Contents
Part I. General approach to the critically ill patient -- Basic principles -- The first impression -- Checking vital functions -- Recognizing pre-terminal signs -- Part II. Examining single organ systems -- The airway and lungs -- The circulation -- The brain -- The abdomen -- The liver -- The hydration status and the kidneys -- The neuromuscular system and spinal cord -- The coagulation -- Part III. Systematic examination schemes -- The patient in respiratory distress -- The patient in shock -- The patient with neurological disease -- The patient with severe trauma -- The patient with a suspected infection -- The patient in cardiac arrest -- The intoxicated patient -- During the ICU ward round -- Part IV. Appendix. Dermatological pearls.

Abstract
This richly illustrated book presents a straightforward non-instrumental method of clinical facial analysis in preparation for aesthetic surgery, orthognathic surgery, and orthodontic treatments. The opening chapters discuss various practical aspects of facial examination and photography. The role of precise and standardized three-dimensional photographic documentation of the face is highlighted, and a lighting technique developed by the authors is presented. Analysis of different regions of the face and dentofacial deformities is then discussed in a series of detailed chapters. At the end of each of these chapters, multiple-choice checklists are included that will help the reader to perform step-by-step regional analysis. Further chapters consider the aging face and post-treatment follow-up. Exercises on clinical photography and analysis are provided, and advice and quotations from experts are also included. Important features of the book are its multidisciplinary approach and the emphasis placed on the relationship between different parts of the face. This second edition has been thoroughly updated and includes a new chapter on recording and documentation relating specifically to aesthetic facial surgery.
Contents
Introduction: Facial Analysis. What, Why, When & How -- Approaching the Patient for Direct and Photographic Facial Analysis -- Lighting Techniques for Clinical Facial Photography -- Views of Clinical Facial Photography -- The "Facial Points of Interest" -- Basic Facial Analysis -- Eyebrows, Eyes and Forehead Analysis -- Nasal Analysis -- Lips, Teeth, Chin, and Smile Analysis -- Dentofacial Deformities -- The Aging Face -- Continuing Facial Analysis -- Aesthetic Facial Surgery: First Consultation Notes, Essential Medical History & Clinical Diary -- Exercises on Clinical Photography and Analysis -- Suggested Reading -- Surround Yourself with Experts (and other important advice for a constructive and creative surgical practice) -- Appendix: "Beauty is compound".

Abstract
This book elucidates the principles of sound clinical examination in ophthalmology. Based on the author’s extensive teaching experience, it makes the case for arriving at a diagnosis through detailed clinical examinations, including history taking, knowledge of clinical epidemiology, and using only the most relevant clinical tests. Starting with basic chapters on relevant statistics and clinical epidemiology, the book covers history-taking, visual function assessment, slit lamp examination, and examinations of each important field (e.g. the lids, orbit, cornea, iris and pupil, glaucoma patients, sclera, lens, posterior segment, pediatric patient and neuro-ophthalmology) in separate chapters. Full of practical tips on examining patients at the clinic, the book also describes the rationale behind each clinical test and its interpretation. It is also hoped that teachers who come across this book will evaluate students on the basis of these relevant clinical examinations rather than quizzing them on esoteric clinical tests that are not routinely used and are of little clinical value. This book is intended to help all ophthalmologists, beginners and veterans alike, improve their clinical examination thinking and skills.
Contents
1. Introduction -- 2. Overview of Statistics and Epidemiology for Clinical Diagnosis: Connecting the Dots -- 3. History Taking: The Most Important Clinical Test -- 4. Visual Function and Its Assessment -- 5. Evaluating Refractive Error and Prescribing Glasses -- 6. The Slit Lamp Examination -- 7. Examination of Lids, Adnexa and Orbit -- 8.
