Abstract
This book will help the reader to recognize, diagnose, and efficiently treat most of the acute abdominal disorders that may be encountered in the pregnant patient, whether associated with or incidental to the pregnancy. A wide range of conditions are addressed, including some which are very rare as well as those more frequently seen, such as acute appendicitis and acute cholecystitis. The principles underlying diagnosis and therapy are clearly explained. Particular features in the clinical presentation of pregnant patients are highlighted, and specific diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms and protocols, described. Attention is drawn to the diagnostic difficulties that may arise from atypical presentations in these patients and to restrictions on the use of certain diagnostic imaging studies. The text is complemented by more than 200 figures relevant to clinical practice. Acute Abdomen During Pregnancy is designed to meet the needs of both the gynecologist and the general or abdominal surgeon, who together form the multidisciplinary team mandatory for effective treatment that will safeguard mother and baby.
Contents

Surgery -- Acute Appendicitis -- Acute Biliary Tract Diseases -- Acute Pancreatitis -- Nontraumatic Gastroduodenal Perforations -- Symptomatic Abdominal Wall Hernias -- Symptomatic Diaphragmatic Hernia -- Intestinal Obstruction -- Acute Inflammatory Bowel Disease -- Spleen -- Abdominal Trauma -- Miscellaneous Conditions -- Part II. Abstract
A description of our current understanding of antiepileptic drug use during pregnancy, this book includes chapters on the impact of seizures on the mother and developing child, changes in maternal physiology during pregnancy and its impact on drug disposition, and the pharmacokinetic differences between the various anti-seizure medications. It also deals with the possible harmful effects of antiepileptic drug exposure during pregnancy on the physical and intellectual development of the fetus. Clinicians have to balance the potential adverse effects of the medicine for the fetus and mother-to-be against the risks that uncontrolled seizures hold for both when treating pregnant women with antiepileptic drugs. Only recently have enough scientific data emerged to provide a rational basis for treatment decisions that take in both aspects. This work provides a single, accessible, and up-to-date resource for busy clinicians.
Contents
1. Introduction -- 2. Antiepileptic drugs and becoming pregnant -- Part I: Antiepileptic Drug Pharmacokinetics in Pregnancy -- 3. Antiepileptic drug disposition and pregnancy -- 4. The older antiepileptic drugs -- 5. Commonly used newer antiepileptic drugs -- 6. Antiepileptic drugs sometimes used in pregnancy -- Part II: Antiepileptic Drugs and the Foetus -- 7. Antiepileptic drugs, epileptic seizures and the foetus -- 8. Antiepileptic drugs and foetal malformations - a possible class effect -- 9. Particular antiepileptic drugs and foetal malformations -- 10. Antiepileptic drugs, cognition and neurodevelopment -- Part III: Antiepileptic Drug use and Pregnancy -- 11. Antiepileptic drug therapy: management issues and pregnancy -- 12. Antiepileptic drugs and pregnancy: the future.

In the western world, the risk of cardiovascular disease in pregnancy has grown due to the increasing age at the first pregnancy and the worldwide obesity epidemic leading to early diabetes and hypertension. As a result more women are requiring drug therapy during pregnancy and some data has shown an altered pharmacodynamic profile in pregnant women when compared to the non-pregnant population. Cardiac Drugs in Pregnancy presents up-to-date research for the treatment of cardiovascular disease during pregnancy, and discusses the most important indications of drug usage in pregnancy and postpartum. The book aims to assess the potential risk of drugs and their possible benefit against each other, making it an essential read for a wide range of health professionals involved in cardiac drug therapy in pregnancy.
