This is a multi-specialty book on the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of CNS metastases of the brain and spine. Written by renowned experts in their fields, the book covers essential contemporary topics in CNS metastases care. The book is divided into seven parts that begin with chapters that cover the fundamental biology of disease so that subsequent chapters on imaging, diagnosis, treatment, and palliation can be properly contextualized. This text also provides a framework for understand…
In this thesis, a tracking system was developed by modifying an add-on collimator, the Siemens Moduleaf, for realtime applications in radiotherapy. As the add-on collimator works almost completely autonomously of the linear accelerator (LinAc), no modifications to the latter were necessary. The adaptations to the Moduleaf were mainly software-based. In order to reduce the complexity of the system, outdated electronic parts were replaced with newer components where practical. Verification was pe…
The articles in this volume cover the various options of the optimal management of brain tumors, vascular lesions, and functional disorders. They provide a good balance between microneurosurgery and radiosurgery, presenting also alternative surgical and radiosurgical treatment options with discussions on their advantages and disadvantages. The presentation of multiple treatment methods will help to provide better service to patients. Some papers, specifically highlighting alternative treatment …
This handbook concisely summarizes state-of-the-art information about stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), including the history and development of these modalities, the biologic rationale for these technologies, typical practices, and reported results. Developed as a companion to Handbook of Evidence-Based Radiation Oncology, Second Edition, edited by Eric Hansen and Mack Roach, III, it is organized by disease site and presents treatment techniques and rec…
This handbook summarizes the data and techniques for hypofractionation and stereotactic radiation in a clinically-accessible way. Hypofractionated radiation therapy, which consists of larger-dose radiation treatments that are given over a shorter time period compared to conventional radiation fraction sizes, is used to treat a variety of cancers, including prostate, breast, lung, and colorectal. Conventional radiation therapy and hypofractionated radiation therapy have different effectiveness r…
This book provides the reader with a detailed update on the use of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) in patients with lesions of the brain and other parts of the body. The aim is not simply to explain the application of SRS and document its value with reference to the author's own clinical experiences and other published evidence, but also to contextualize the technology within a new strategic concept of cancer care. When embedded within an appropriate conceptual framework, technology becomes piv…
Principles and Practice of Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), Second Edition aims to serve as the definitive reference textbook for SRS practitioners. It provides a theoretical basis for the use of therapeutic SRS including imaging techniques and radiobiology. The bulk of the textbook contains chapters that are comprehensive in scope on all diseases that are treated by SRS. Lastly, it addresses administrative and technical aspects of running an SRS unit. Each chapter provides an expansive treatme…
This book offers a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in the practice of radioguided surgery. The opening section is devoted to the basic physics principles for detection and imaging, radiation detection device technology, principles of surgical navigation, radionuclides and radiopharmaceuticals, and radiation safety. A series of chapters then address the clinical application of radioguided surgery for a variety of malignancies, including breast cancer, melanoma and other cutaneous …
This book provides a radiotherapy perspective on the management of brain metastases with case-based discussion. This management has been rapidly evolving in the face of changing technology, progressing systemic therapy, and paradigm changes that all impact practice. These changes can be difficult, and this text gives a practical approach to help practitioners and trainees understand these changes and incorporate them into their practices. The work has two main sections: Clinical and Technical. …
You have agreed to have stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy (SABR) for your prostate cancer. It is also called stereotactic radiation therapy. This is a focused type of radiation that gives a high dose of radiation in 5 treatments. The information in this pamphlet supports the teaching you will get from your radiation therapy team. The pamphlet explains how prostate SABR works, how to get ready for treatment, what will happen during your treatment sessions, and what to expect after your tre…
This pamphlet describes Stereotactic Body radiation therapy: how to prepare for treatment, what will happen during treatment, and what will happen after treatment.
Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) has emerged as an innovative treatment for various primary and metastatic cancers, and the past five years have witnessed a quantum leap in its use. This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the physical/technological, biological, and clinical aspects of SBRT. It will serve as a detailed resource for this rapidly developing treatment modality. The organ sites covered include lung, liver, spine, pancreas, prostate, adrenal, head and …
This practical guide covers the basic aspects of stereotactic radiotherapy systems and treatment. As an emerging field, stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) offers image-guided radiation that is directed at extremely well-defined tumor targets within the body, delivering very high doses of radiation. Indications for SBRT have expanded extensively in recent years from intracranial treatment to extracranial, leading to the development of a thriving subspecialty within radiation oncology. The exp…
Your doctor has talked to you about stereotactic radiation therapy. This therapy allows high dose radiation beams to be focused on a small area. This pamphlet explains how to get ready for your treatment, what will happen during your treatment, how many treatments you will need, and what will happen after your treatments are finished. The phone number for the Patient Line at the QEII Cancer Centre is given.
This book is a comprehensive review of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT): its physics, clinical evidence, indications, and future directions. The utilization of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is increasing internationally because of several factors. First, it offers patients a local treatment option that has demonstrated effectiveness similar to traditional surgery without the morbidity of general anest…
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among North American and European men, but its treatment continues to be problematic owing to serious side-effects, including erectile dysfunction, urinary incontinence, and potential lower GI complicatons. Robotic radiosurgery offers a novel, rapid, non-invasive outpatient treatment option for prostate cancer that combines robotics, advanced image-guided motion detection, and automated real-time corrective spatial positioning with submillimeter precisi…
