Abstract
This book tells the intriguing and often colorful stories of the medical words we use. The origins of clinical and scientific terms can be found in Greek and Latin myths, in places such as jungles of Uganda and the islands of the Aegean Sea, in the names of medicine's giants such as Hippocrates and Osler, and in some truly unlikely sources. In this book you will learn the answers to questions such as: What disease was named for an American space flight? Do you know the echoic word for elephantine rumbling of the bowels? What drug name was determined by drawing chemists' notes out of a hat? What are surfer's eye, clam digger's itch, and hide porter's disease? This book can give you new insights into the terms we use every day in the clinic, hospital, and laboratory. Knowing a word's history assists in understanding not only what it means, but also some of the connotative subtleties of terms used in diagnosis and treatment. The Amazing Language of Medicine is intended for the enrichment of physicians, other health professionals, students, and anyone involved in clinical care and medical science.

Abstract
As a general introduction to the SNOMED CT clinical terminology code system, the book explains in simple terms a wealth of key aspects, including the fundamentals of SNOMED CT, the various ways in which it can be used, and the methods by which it may quickly be deployed for use within an electronic documentation system that deals with clinical and clinics-related data. Further considerations include how end users can employ the system, how healthcare IT designers and developers can build highly ergonomic systems, and how health informatics experts and clinical analysts can successfully harness the various features that the clinical terminology code system provides in order to unleash the hidden potentials of clinical data. The book brings together material from various sources, presenting it in an easy-to-follow manner and supplemented by analyses of a number of different (imaginary) scenarios including case summaries from the author's experience and knowledge. The book will greatly benefit all stakeholders involved: clinicians, nurses, paramedics, dentists, public health professionals, health informatics professionals and healthcare IT engineers involved in the design and development of information systems for healthcare. Students at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels seeking a practical introduction to SNOMED CT will find this book to be a valuable guide.
Contents
1. Overview of SNOMED CT -- 2. Need for Clinical Terminology -- 3. SNOMED CT History and IHTSDO -- 4. SNOMED CT Basics -- 5. Extending SNOMED CT -- 6. Enabling SNOMED CT -- 7. SNOMED CT Expressions -- 8. Clinical Analytics with SNOMED CT -- 9. Using SNOMED CT -- 10. SNOMED CT Tips and Tricks -- 11. Overall Assessment.

Abstract
This is more than just a book on medical terminology -- its organization emphasizes the clinical importance of the various systems of the human body. This is an update of the 2010 edition. The book has three parts: Introduction to Medical Terminology, Disease and Treatment, and Body Systems. The chapters begin with a case study followed by learning objectives, a pretest, and then chapter content. Chapters in the second two sections contain illustrated overviews of a specific organ system with definitions of key terms. Tables, images, drawings, terminology abbreviations, information boxes, and other useful learning tools are found throughout the text to reinforce learning. Chapters end with a review containing various exercises such as matching, word building, and other reinforcement tools. The book ends with nine appendixes (which include commonly used symbols, abbreviations and their meanings, word roots, suffixes, prefixes, and other useful tools) and answer key to chapter review sections. This is an outstanding medical terminology textbook. It presents not only the concepts of medical terminology, it also applies these concepts to the structure and function of the human body as well as body systems.--Doody's Expert Review.
