Abstract
Intended as a companion to the recently published, Evidence-Based Cosmetic Breast Surgery (978-3-319-53957-7), Evidence-Based Body Contouring Surgery and VTE Prevention once again concentrates on the science, relying on data rather than expert opinion. In his familiar detail-oriented style, Eric Swanson critically evaluates popular body contouring procedures such as liposuction, abdominoplasty, arm lifts, thigh lifts, and buttock fat transfer. The source material is published in the major peer-reviewed plastic surgery journals. The conclusions frequently challenge conventional wisdom. Fat redistribution theory is dispelled. A unique chapter titled "The Metabolic Effect of Liposuction" reveals some surprising positive effects of liposuction. The limitations of alternative nonsurgical treatments are the subject of a chapter titled "Evaluating New Technologies." A novel chapter describes SAFE (Spontaneous breathing, Avoid gas, Face up, Extremities mobile) anesthesia as a replacement for traditional general endotracheal anesthesia Çô lowering risk, minimizing blood loss, and reducing recovery times. The last two chapters will have many readers reconsidering traditional methods of venous thromboembolism (VTE) prevention. Chapter 12 exposes the shortcomings of risk prediction methods and routine anticoagulation. The final chapter describes the use of ultrasound for VTE surveillance. These chapters will likely find an audience among surgeons from all specialties and anesthesiologists. For scientifically inclined readers, whether seasoned surgeons or residents, this unique resource may well lead to evidence-based changes in their practices.

Abstract
This book addresses placement and retrieval of inferior vena cava (IVC) filters. Until 2010, utilization of IVC filters had been increasing since their introduction in 1967. Studies in the early 2000’s, however, identified that prolonged caval interruption with IVC filters were fraught with complications including filter fracture, migration, and caval thrombosis. This subsequently led the FDA to issue an advisory recommending judicious placement and timely retrieval of IVC filters by treating physicians. This safety advisory ultimately created a heightened awareness by medical professionals and the general public regarding the negative consequences surrounding long-term caval filtration. Subsequently, IVC filter placements decreased nationally while retrievals conversely increased in the post-FDA advisory era. During this same time period, interest in complex IVC filter retrieval also increased as a method to manage patients identified to have or be at risk for complications secondary to prolonged filter implantation. Given these established trends and interest surrounding advanced techniques in IVC filter retrieval, this book addresses these topics in a reader-friendly, case-based format. Chapters focus particularly around the recognition and management of filter-related complications. Additionally, advanced techniques employed by experienced operators for complex filter retrieval are also discussed. For completeness, the book also includes a review of indications and appropriate methods for IVC filter placement. This book is unique in that, at present, descriptions of complications and advanced techniques utilized for complicated IVC filter removal consist mainly of case reports and case series scattered throughout the literature. This publication serves to compile these sources into a single comprehensive entity for physicians treating patients with IVC filters. Chapters are organized to begin with a few introductory paragraphs highlighting the relevant literature (and providing references for in-depth reading) followed by several cases demonstrating tips, tricks, and procedural pitfalls. When possible, each case will include a step-by-step description of the technique being described. This is an ideal guide for interventional radiologists, interventional cardiologists, and vascular surgeons that perform or are interested in performing filter retrieval beyond standard techniques.
Contents
1. Current Data and Trends on Inferior Vena Cava Filter Placement and Retrieval -- 2. IVC Filter Placement: Accepted and Relative Indications -- 3. Inferior Vena Cava Filter Placement: Anatomical Evaluation and Approach to Variant Anatomy -- 4. IVC Filter Retrieval: Routine Approach -- 5. Complex Filter Retrieval Planning -- 6. Filter Strut Penetration: Does It Matter? -- 7. Retrieval of Filters with Embedded Apices -- 8. Filter Strut Incorporation: Tools for Success and Improved Procedural Safety -- 9. Mechanism and Approach to Fractured Filters -- 10. IVC Filter Migration and Misplacement -- 11. IVC Filter Retrieval: Unusual Circumstances -- 12. Permanent Inferior Vena Cava Filters: Special Considerations -- 13. Management of the Acute Thrombus-Bearing IVC Filter -- 14. Management of Filter-Related Chronic Iliocaval Occlusion.

Abstract
Thromboembolism in Orthopedic Surgery reviews the main topics in thromboprophylaxis around orthopedic surgery, from a general view of the problems with the disease and highlighting them in orthopedics to the new specific protocols involving, for example, new oral anticoagulants. The wide scope of this book covers topics ranging from The prevalence of the venous thromboembolism in each procedure and the risk factors to bear in mind in each one. The diagnosis and treatment of venous thromboembolism. The methods for thromboprophylaxis. Anaesthetic implications for thromboprophylaxis and, also, main implications of the application of antithrombotic protocols in the anaesthetic practice are covered. An approach based on dividing the orthopedic procedures according to their own thrombotic risk was used, thus providing seperate protocols for each thromboprophylaxis: high risk, day surgery procedures and "special" surgical procedures. Finally, we review the problems involving the perioperatory management of antiaggregated and anticoagulated patients, with a special part in hip fracture surgery. The multicisciplinary approach and contributions from a panel of expert internationalá authors have come together to create an excellent teaching rescource, and essential guid to improving the application of thromboprophylaxis in orthopedic surgery.
