The first section of the book describes the essential anatomy and physiology/pathophysiology. It also includes evaluation of common presentations of venous diseases such as extremity edema and lower extremity ulceration with a summary for work up that includes conditions that can mimic venous diseases. The organization of the book follows the basic pathophysiology of venous disorders with chapters addressing special conditions of common interest such as pelvic congestion syndrome, thoracic outlet syndrome, and May-Thurner syndrome. There is emphasis on novel treatment modalities and emerging technologies through dedicated chapters to anticoagulant agents, emerging modalities to treat superficial venous reflux and venous stent technology. The various technical maneuvers for manual control of hemorrhage, debridement-resection as well as formal lobectomy of the liver, the identification of biliary tract injuries and other miscellaneous techniques, such as balloon tamponade of missile tracts, are discussed in complete detail. The book also sketches the role of liver transplantation surgeons in the acute trauma setting. The final chapters focus on the urgent problem of teaching operative techniques to young trauma surgeons in an era of dwindling surgical experience. - The management of venous pathology has been revolutionized by technological advancements. Venous disease is now managed with a wide variety of techniques that collectively allow physicians to diagnose and treat venous problems in ways that few surgeons would have anticipated even a decade ago. Techniques include laser ablation, radiofrequency ablation, chemical ablation (sclerotherapy), high ligation with or without stripping, ambulatory phlebectomy, powered phlebectomy, subfascial endoscopic perforator surgery, three-dimensional venography, and intravascular ultrasound. All of these topics are covered in this comprehensive, up-to-date textbook, which guides the practitioner through every aspect of care of the venous patient and includes essential background information on anatomy and pathophysiology. This book is exceptional in that it is based entirely on the curriculum designed for board certification by the American College of Phlebology (ACP). A further unique aspect of the text is the integration of ultrasound and various other imaging modalities, that play a fundamental role in diagnosis and management.
