Abstract
This is the first time a book about laparoscopy in emergency abdominal surgery has been published. Numerous articles have been published in specific surgical journals, but, until now, there has not been a book that collates all the aspects of this little-known field. The aim of this volume is to achieve a complete and easy presentation of all the implications associated with laparoscopy in emergency abdominal surgery. The book should be a manual that can be easily consulted by digestive, general, and specialized surgeons, especially in an emergency. The authors' contributions are founded on evidence-based medicine, which give the book scientific credibility, but this is coupled with their experience of daily practice, which adds an important complementary dimension to evidence-based medicine. This is balanced by an emphasis on clarity and accessibility, because the ultimate aim of the book is educational. We hope this book will be frequently consulted, in depth, not only by specialist practitioners, but also by undergraduate students, new graduates and surgeons in training.

Abstract
Just a few years ago, dire predictions of escalating technology costs and adverse demographics informed a downbeat view of the future of medicine in which struggling governments would fall behind in their public commitments to healthcare. This volume is part of today's more optimistic assessment in which huge efficiencies can be wrought through 'personalized' medicine: patients, for example, have no need to visit clinics when biochemical monitoring can be achieved in the comfort of their own homes, the results sent wirelessly, in real time, to the specialist's database. With contributions spanning the experiences of 15 nations from the USA to Turkey, Taiwan and the UK, the contents of this book show what is possible in implementing personalized medicine in a heterogeneous set of contexts. Today's burgeoning use of advanced early and predictive diagnostics, targeted prevention and personalized medical approaches will accelerate as advances in patient profiling and innovative bio/medical technologies come on stream. They could enable many of tomorrow's elderly to reach 100 years of age in good physical and mental health, as actively contributing members of society. The scope of coverage in this volume provides a comprehensive and unrivaled review of historical, cultural, demographic, ethnic, socio-economic, political, and other aspects of personalized medicine. It shows that reaping the benefits of this kind of medical care requires careful regulations in healthcare and skilful political planning.

Abstract
The treatment of liver diseases comprises a significant component of the practice of any general surgeon, whether working in an academic, a general, or a community hospital. With the rapid expansion in knowledge and technology, the liver has also been approached laparoscopically in specialized centers, with well-recognized advantages for patients. This book aims to communicate the large body of experience that has now been accumulated in minimally invasive liver surgery, with comprehensive and up-to-date information on the newest techniques. After a concise description of the main tools and technology necessary to carry out safe laparoscopic and/or robot-assisted liver surgery, individual operative techniques are explained and illustrated. Each chapter includes introductory information, a summary of indications and contraindications, and a detailed description of surgical procedure, including potential complications of both the surgery and the postoperative care. Special efforts have been taken to ensure that the illustrations are accurate and informative. The text is supplemented by a DVD of different procedures as performed by leading European liver surgeons.

Abstract
Defining organs at risk is a crucial task for radiation oncologists when aiming to optimize the benefit of radiation therapy, with delivery of the maximum dose to the tumor volume while sparing healthy tissues. This book will prove an invaluable guide to the delineation of organs at risk of toxicity in patients undergoing radiotherapy. The first and second sections address the anatomy of organs at risk, discuss the pathophysiology of radiation-induced damage, and present dose constraints and methods for target volume delineation. The third section is devoted to the radiological anatomy of organs at risk as seen on typical radiotherapy planning CT scans, with a view to assisting the radiation oncologist to recognize and delineate these organs for each anatomical region head and neck, mediastinum, abdomen, and pelvis. The book is intended both for young radiation oncologists still in training and for their senior colleagues wishing to reduce intra-institutional variations in practice and thereby to standardize the definition of clinical target volumes.

Abstract
This book comprises proceedings from the Third International Conference on Advances in Nutrition and Cancer, held in Naples in May 2012. This highly multidisciplinary meeting analyzed "nutrition and cancer" from different perspectives and on the basis of distinct and up-to-date experimental approaches. Knowledge on the relation between lifestyle, diet, and cancer is explored in a number of contributions, and the role of dietary intervention in cancer patients is discussed. Issues of vital interest to the research community, such as epidemiological and experimental oncology (genetics, epigenetics, and the mechanisms of action of natural compounds in the diet), receive detailed consideration. A further key topic is the emerging molecular technologies (the "omics") that can cast light on the interplay between nutrition and human malignancies. Chapters take the form of reviews that include sections presenting expert opinions. Advances in Nutrition and Cancer will be an invaluable source of topical information for all researchers and clinicians with an interest in this field.

Abstract
Prostate cancer is the most common neoplasm in men and its management is very complex, in terms of both diagnosis and treatment. In recent years the value of multidisciplinary management within a prostate cancer unit has been increasingly recognized. Such a multidisciplinary approach within a specialized unit involves a variety of specialists, including urologists, oncologists, radiotherapists, radiologists and pathologists. This book describes in detail the advantages of multidisciplinary management of prostate cancer. It opens by explaining the nature of the required multidisciplinary team and the potential benefits of the prostate cancer unit as a structure for the delivery of specialist multidisciplinary care. Epidemiological aspects favoring multidisciplinary management are described and each element of care within the context of the prostate cancer unit is then discussed; also has been described the role of advanced imaging (Multiparametric MRI) in the management of PCa. Early diagnosis, risk classification, treatment decision making, surgery, radiotherapy, medical therapies and health care support are all fully considered. This book will be informative and enlightening for all who are involved in the management of patients with prostate cancer.

Abstract
This handy volume focuses on the evaluation and treatment of a wide range of sports injuries, in relation to the Tanner stage of sexual development in young athletes. Recognized leaders in each subspecialty illustrate their own treatment preferences, and a series of detailed chapters address the injuries likely to be encountered in different parts of the body, including the spine, shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand, hip, knee, ankle, and feet. Among the topics that receive particular attention are epiphyseal-physeal injuries, the still controversial issue of capsular ligament tears and the impact of their treatment on joint and bone development, and stress syndromes of the musculoskeletal system. Helpful algorithms covering the diagnosis and treatment of ligament tears are included, and advice is provided on when to return an athlete to training. One chapter is devoted to non-sports-related pathologies that have to be considered in the differential diagnosis of sports injuries in adolescents.

Abstract
This book aims to provide clinicians and other practitioners and professionals with up-to-date information on how to evaluate and manage headaches in children and adolescents, highlighting the most recent recommendations. Unlike in other books on the subject, detailed attention is devoted to the various comorbidities commonly associated with headache, including psychiatric comorbidities such as depression, anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and learning disabilities and medical conditions such as epilepsy, vascular disorders, brain tumors, atopic disease, and obesity. The intimate link between these conditions and headache is explained with a view to enabling the reader to recognize their presence and, on that basis, to institute the most effective pharmacological or non-pharmacological treatment strategy. Moreover, knowledge of the comorbidities associated with headache will help readers to understand more fully the causes of this serious disorder and also its consequences, e.g., for school performance, relationships, and daily activities. The authors are all international experts who care for children with headache or the other described disorders.

In this book, a distinguished group of clinicians provide straightforward, focused answers to the questions most commonly confronted by a multidisciplinary team when caring for patients with rectal cancer. The format of the book is designed to aid optimal decision making in a multidisciplinary setting with respect to key issues in imaging, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and surgery, all of which are considered in detail. Helpful guidance is also offered on risk factor identification, pathology procedures and their prognostic value, and multidisciplinary team management. The authors have been carefully selected for their expertise, and most have been involved in the management of the more significant trials published in Europe during the past decade. In an era in which all patients are entitled to access healthcare systems that deliver the highest quality of treatment within a safe environment, together with appropriate advice, support, and long-term follow-up, the multidisciplinary team is of central importance. This successful book, in its revised and updated second edition, is designed to provide all the guidance likely to be required by members of the multidisciplinary team at various stages of the pathway of care for patients with rectal cancer.

Abstract
This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the surgical treatment of pelvic organ prolapse, focusing especially on issues that continue to arouse controversy. In the first section, leading experts present detailed information on the surgical anatomy, pathophysiology, and epidemiology of prolapse and also the impact of concomitant functional disorders. The second section focuses on diagnostic work-up and the third is dedicated to the various treatment options aimed at resolution of the condition. The closing chapters discuss outcome measures and analyze the effects of prolapse surgery on urinary, bowel, and sexual symptoms. In 1966 Richard TeLinde stated that, "Every honest surgeon of extensive and long experience will have to admit that he is not entirely and absolutely satisfied with his long-term results of all his operations for prolapse and allied conditions." Although many uncertainties in the field have since been resolved, some major issues still require clarification. Often it can be difficult to find the right balance between treatment effectiveness in the long term and risk reduction, including with respect to complications. This book will help trainees and less experienced surgeons to make appropriate treatment choices and achieve optimal outcomes.
