- Pope John Paul II surprised much of the medical world in 2004 with his strongly worded statement insisting that patients in a persistent vegetative state should be provided with nutrition and hydration. While many Catholic bioethicists defended the Pope's claim that the life of all human beings, even those in a persistent vegetative state or a coma, was worth protecting, others argued that the Pope's position marked a shift from the traditional Catholic teaching on the withdrawal of medical treatment at the end of life. The debate among Catholic bioethicists over the Pope's statement only grew more intense during the controversy surrounding Terry Schiavo's death in 2005, as bioethicists on both sides of the debate argued about the legitimacy of removing her feeding tubes. This collection of essays by some of the most prominent Catholic bioethicists addresses the Pope's statements, the moral issues surrounding artificial feeding and hydration, the refusal of treatment, and the ethics of care for those at the end of life.

This first volume describes the physics and chemistry required for a sound understanding of modern ophthalmology. The text guides the reader from short descriptions of historical background and basic introductions to recent aspects that are relevant in daily clinical practice. The eye is the organ that recognizes light, and most examinations and many treatments rely on light. Therefore, the book starts with an extensive discussion of the nature of light, the interaction of light with matter, and the way in which light is used in ophthalmic examinations and treatments. After describing traditional methods of imaging, particular emphasis is placed on modern instrumentation such as OCT. This topic is complemented by discussion of other techniques including ultrasound, X-rays, and MRI. A comprehensive overview is devoted to the interaction between light and tissues in different types of laser treatment. The chemistry section focuses on compounds particularly relevant to the eye, such as oxygen and water. Special attention is also devoted to the origin and consequences of oxidative stress. Finally, the physical behavior of chemical compounds, such as gas or silicone oil, in the eye is explained. The complex material is made easy to understand through the use of many examples taken from the field of ophthalmology. The text is complemented by about 450 figures. This volume will be a great asset both to residents preparing for their basic science examination and to experienced professionals, including ophthalmologists and optometrists.

Ce dépliant donne des conseils pour boire de l’eau de façon sécuritaire entre les repas et réduire les risques d’étouffement.
- This pamphlet is a French translation of "Drinking Water Between Meals" pamphlet 1159. Some people have problems swallowing thin liquids. This means that some liquids may go into their airway instead of their stomach. This is called aspiration. Aspiration is the word used when food or drink goes ‘down the wrong way’. Sometimes aspiration can increase the chance of getting pneumonia (lung infection). It can also be very unpleasant and cause coughing. It may be hard to drink enough thick liquids to stay hydrated. To make sure you get enough liquids, you may be able to drink water between meals. This pamphlet gives guidelines for drinking water safely between meals for people with swallowing problems so that there is less chance of choking.

Since the publication of the first edition, climate change has been increasingly acknowledged as being directly related to the prevalence and incidence of respiratory morbidity.
