Abstract
The vector-borne Zika virus joins avian influenza, Ebola, and yellow fever as recent public health crises threatening pandemicity. By a combination of stochastic modeling and economic geography, this book proposes two key causes together explain the explosive spread of the worst of the vector-borne outbreaks. Ecosystems in which such pathogens are largely controlled by environmental stochasticity are being drastically streamlined by both agribusiness-led deforestation and deficits in public health and environmental sanitation. Consequently, a subset of infections that once burned out relatively quickly in local forests are now propagating across susceptible human populations whose vulnerability to infection is often exacerbated in structurally adjusted cities. The resulting outbreaks are characterized by greater global extent, duration, and momentum. As infectious diseases in an age of nation states and global health programs cannot, as much of the present modeling literature presumes, be described by interacting populations of host, vector, and pathogen alone, a series of control theory models is also introduced here. These models, useful to researchers and health officials alike, explicitly address interactions between government ministries and the pathogens they aim to control.

Abstract
This book reviews the various emerging infectious diseases that show a significant association with uveitis, describing and explaining their ocular manifestations with the aid of color illustrations. In addition, it presents brief reports of further emerging infections that are associated with uveitis in rare cases. The coverage is wide ranging, encompassing diverse emerging bacterial, viral, parasitic and fungal infections. Individual chapters are also devoted to important re-emergent diseases such as syphilis and tuberculosis, with the focus on new data on epidemiology, diagnosis and management. Emerging infectious diseases are defined as “those whose incidence in humans has increased within the past two decades or threatens to increase in the near future”. Emergence may be due to the spread of a new agent, to the recognition of an infection that has been present in the population but has gone undetected, or to the realization that an established disease has an infectious origin. This book will be an invaluable source of information on all aspects of uveitis in these diseases.

Abstract
The book begins with a review of zoonotic pandemics of the past: the "Black Death" or bubonic plague of the Middle Ages, the Spanish Influenza pandemic (derived from avian influenza) of the early 20th century, to the more modern pandemic of AIDS/HIV infection, which originated in Africa from primates. However, the majority of chapters focus on more recent zoonoses, which have been recognized since the late 20th century to the present: SARS and MERS coronaviruses New avian influenza viruses The tick-borne Henan fever virus from China The tick-borne Heartland virus from the United States Recently recognized bacterial pathogens, such as Streptococcus suis from pigs. In addition, reemergence of established zoonoses that have expanded their niche are reviewed, such as the spread of Zika virus and Chikungunya virus to the Western Hemisphere, and the emergence and spread of Ebola virus infection in Africa. A chapter is also devoted to an overview of the mechanisms and various types of animals involved in the transmission of diseases to humans, and the potential means of control and prevention. Many endemic and sporadic diseases are still transmitted by animals, through either direct or indirect contact, and zoonoses are estimated to account for about 75% of all new and emerging infectious diseases. It is predicted by public health experts that the next major pandemic of infectious disease will be of animal origin, making Emerging Zoonoses: A Worldwide Perspective a crucial resource to all health care specialists by providing them with much needed information on these zoonotic diseases.
Contents
1. Pandemic zoonoses from the Middle-Ages to the 20th Century -- 2. Animals and mechanisms of disease transmission -- 3. Swine and avian influenza outbreaks in recent times -- 4. Emerging animal coronaviruses: first SARS and now MERS -- 5. Emergence of new tickborne infections -- 6. Chikungunya virus and Zika virus expansion: an imitation of Dengue virus -- 7. Ebola and Marburg: out of Africa -- 8. Hepatitis E: a zoonosis -- 9. Zoonotic malaria: plasmodium knowlesi -- 10. Zoonotic streptococci: a focus on Streptocccus suis -- 11. New and emerging parasitic zoonoses.

"Health issues have long occupied top headlines in Canadian media, and no journalist has written on public health with more authority or for as many years as André Picard. Matters of Life and Death collects Picard's most compelling columns, covering a broad range of topics including Canada's right-to-die law, the true risks of the Zika virus, the financial challenges of a publicly funded health system, appalling health conditions in First Nations communities, the legalization of marijuana, the social and economic impacts of mental illness, and the healthcare challenges facing transgender people. The topic of health touches on the heart of society, intersecting with many aspects of private and public life-human rights, aging, political debate, economics and death. With his reporting, Picard demonstrates the connection between physical health and the health of society as a whole, provides the facts to help readers make knowledgeable health choices, and acts as a devoted advocate for those whose circumstances bar them from receiving the care they need. Providing an antidote to widespread fear-mongering and misinformation, Matters of Life and Death is essential reading for anyone with an investment in public health topics-in other words, everyone."-- Provided by publisher.

Abstract
This book provides a practical, multidisciplinary approach to support a broad range of health professionals, social workers, public health workers and others tasked with providing health and care to young adults. The continuum of life begins with the health and wellness of parents prior to conception, followed by embryonic and fetal development, and continues throughout life. Each person’s life stages prepare them for the next and determine their health outcome and wellbeing over time. The text highlights the importance of promoting health throughout the lifespan, the influence of intergenerational health, and the concept of the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease in epigenetic processes and embryology. Authors underscore the importance of advancing health equity and lift up some of the ethical considerations in this work. The authors explore specific interventions in four major categories: Lifestyle, Infections, Nutrition, and Contraception / Pregnancy Planning (LINC). Preconception care is defined by the World Health Organization as the provision of biomedical, behavioural and social health interventions to women and couples before conception. Preconception care includes evidence-based interventions to improve health status, to reduce behaviours, individual and environmental factors that contribute to poor health outcomes. This book offers readers evidence-based guidance regarding fertility awareness and sperm health, genetic counselling and lifestyle assessments, as well as mental wellbeing, alcohol, tobacco and pharmacotherapy, and specialist care for those with chronic conditions, including a review of medications. It also covers relevant infections, including HIV and the Zika virus, as well as different types of environmental and occupational exposure. The book employs a framework focusing on health promotion, the social determinants of health, and the science behind preconception care. Strategies for improving preconception and interconception health, including examples from around the globe, are described in detail.

Abstract
This book focuses on how to formulate a mental health response to a massive infectious disease outbreak, including a pandemic outbreak. The book combines an emergency mental health response utilized by disaster psychiatry with clinical aspects and expertise on infectious diseases mental health developed by consultation-liaison psychiatry, making it an excellent resource for tackling each stage of an infectious outbreak crisis quickly and thoroughly. The book opens by contextualizing the issues with a historical overview of pandemics ranging from plagues of ancient times, through Black Death in the Middle Ages, Spanish flu pandemic of 1918, to outbreaks of modern times, including HIV, Ebola, and Zika. The text acknowledges the new infectious disease challenges presented by climate changes and bioterrorism and considers how to implement systems to prepare for these issues from an infection and social perspective. The manuscript then delves into the mental health aspects of these crises, including community and cultural responses, emotional epidemiology, and mental health concerns in the aftermath of a disaster. Finally, the text considers medical responses to situation-specific trauma, including quarantine and isolation-associated trauma, the mental health aspects of immunization and vaccination (including vaccine hesitancy), survivor mental health, and support for healthcare personnel, thereby providing guidance for some of the most alarming situations facing the medical community organizing a mental health response to an infectious outbreak. Written by experts in the field, Psychiatry of Pandemics is an excellent resource for infectious disease specialists, psychiatrists, psychologists, immunologists, hospitalists, public health officials, nurses, disaster mental health workers, and all medical professionals who may work with patients in an infectious disease outbreak.

Abstract
This book addresses the most important postnatal features of Zika virus infection, providing important information on its epidemiology, pathology, clinical aspects, imaging and laboratory diagnosis. Since the report of a Zika virus infection epidemic in Northeastern Brazil in 2015, the world has paid close attention to this emergent disease. Historically, this has been the third outbreak of Zika infection described (preceded by outbreaks in Micronesia and French Polynesia), but for the first time the association with congenital microcephaly and other neurological co-morbidities in infants from women infected with the Zika virus was observed. Since then, government bodies, public health agencies, medical societies and scholars have joined forces to understand this disease, and to promote its prevention and management. Currently, the relationship between Zika virus and microcephaly is well established, as well as the most characteristic findings of congenital Zika syndrome (e.g. microcephaly, arthrogryposis, ophthalmologic and hearing abnormalities). Also, the spectrum of the disease's severity has broadened, with less severe cases (without microcephaly) being recently recognized. Even so, there is currently a dearth of material on Zika virus infection for healthcare professional around the world. Addressing that gap, Zika In Focus: Postnatal Aspects aims to help the medical community worldwide by presenting the most important features of Zika virus infection from a postnatal perspective. It is intended to all professionals and researchers interested in this condition, especially paediatricians, radiologists and neurologists, offering them a practical guide to recognizing congenital Zika syndrome in its many aspects and focusing on the radiological pattern of lesions that can be found from the mild to the most severe cases.
