- The purpose of the The Active Female: Health Issues Throughout the Lifespan, 2nd Edition is twofold: (1) to increase the awareness of wellness and fitness issues for active females and their family members; and (2) to provide an avenue for medical practitioners, allied health professionals, health educators, and certified individuals in sports medicine to gain critical, updated knowledge of a field specific to active females. Part I of the book offers a foundation to help the reader understand the interrelationship among body image concerns, the female reproductive cycle, and musculoskeletal anatomy/physiology of females that makes their health risks and concerns unique. Reproductive health is discussed by a prominent researcher in reproduction/endocrinology. An overview of the Female Athlete Triad which is a syndrome of three interrelated conditions (isordered eating, menstrual disturbances and bone loss) is presented in Part II. Physicians and certified professionals in sports medicine discuss the individual components of the triad, relating not only to the athletic female but also to the recreationally active woman throughout the lifespan. In Part III, Prevention and management of common musculoskeletal injuries is addressed by a female orthopedic surgeon who sub-specializes in treating female athletes. - Autophagy principally serves an adaptive function to protect organisms against diverse human pathologies, including cancer and neurodegeneration. Recent developments using in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo models show the involvement of the autophagy pathway in immunity and inflammation. Moreover, direct interactions between autophagy proteins and immune signalling molecules have also been demonstrated. Defects in autophagy - similar to cancer, neurodegenerative diseases and aging - through autophagy gene mutation and/or microbial antagonism, may underlie the pathogenesis of many infectious diseases and inflammatory syndromes. In spite of the increasing awareness of the importance of autophagy in these pathophysiological conditions, this process remains underestimated and is often overlooked. As a consequence, its role in the initiation, stability, maintenance, and progression of these diseases are still poorly understood. This book reviews the recent advances regarding the functions of the autophagy pathway and autophagy proteins in immunity and inflammation, focusing on their role in self-nonself distinction, their implications in innate and adaptive immune responses and their dysregulation in the pathology of certain inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.

- This book addresses conventional and minimally invasive surgery of the cervical spine to cater for both experts and young surgeons with less experience in this field of surgery. It is written by a group of highly trained specialists from all over the world, who present the requirements for the most advanced surgical techniques on the cervical spine. Most of the chapters concern the osteodiscoarthrosic pathology, the main condition responsible for chronic cervical and/or radicular pain. Step by step presentations of the most advanced MISS (endoscopy) and standard procedures such as ACDF (anterior cervical decompression and fusion), using cages or autologous bone, posterior approach to axis instability, minimally invasive stabilization systems, and cervical disc arthroplasty are examined for the treatment of the osteodiscoarthrosis. Looking towards the future, this book also includes chapters about the role of materials in cervical spine fusion and biomechanical engineering evaluation in cervical tribology. Considering the growing incidence of cervical spine discoarthrosis, the authors aim to provide an expert overview of cervical spine surgery to assist the medical community with treating this increasingly common pathology.
