Against this background, there is an increasing need for medical thoracoscopy performed by pulmonologists, which may be video assisted and has the advantage of being very cost-effective. This book is a comprehensive and up-to-date guide to thoracoscopy for pulmonologists that documents the considerable progress in endoscopic telescopes and instrumentation. Clear practical guidance is provided on technique, and diagnostic, therapeutic, and interventional applications of thoracoscopy are all carefully examined with the aid of high-quality illustrations. Although medical thoracoscopy is much less invasive than VATS and thoracotomy, complications can occur in a small number of cases; these are discussed and advice on prevention is provided. - Abstract
- This Atlas is illustrated with rich pictures of cardiac surgical specimens. It not only contains normal heart specimens but also dissects those specimens, taking pictures from various angles to create a three-dimensional representation. It also includes reviews of the specimens' pathological reviews. Chapter 1 through 10 introduce the normal anatomy of the cardiac chambers and surgical approaches to the heart, while chapter 11 through 28 describe 18 kinds of congenital heart defects. There are a total of over 1,000 images and illustrations in this book, which will be of great interest not only to the surgeons, but also to the cardiologists, anaesthesiologists and surgical pathologists. Editor Xiaodong Zhu is professor and former dean of Fuwai Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Science and Peking Union Medical College. He is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

- This book reviews recent important advances in the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in order to analyze neurodegeneration within the retina through the quantification of axonal loss. Detailed information is provided on the role of OCT as a promising tool for the evaluation of disease progression in numerous neurodegenerative disorders and as a biological marker of neuroaxonal injury. The disorders considered include multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, intracranial hypertension, Friedreich's ataxia, schizophrenia, hereditary optic neuropathies, glaucoma, and amblyopia. Individual chapters are also devoted to OCT technique, new OCT technology in neuro-ophthalmology, OCT and pharmacological treatment, and the use of OCT in animal models. As well as being a valuable tool for diagnosis of many retinal diseases and monitoring of surgical and medical treatment, OCT allows study of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) containing the axons of the retinal ganglion cells, which form the optic nerves, chiasm, and optic tracts. Since retinal axons are nonmyelinated until they penetrate the lamina cribrosa, the RNFL is an ideal structure for visualization of any process of neurodegeneration, neuroprotection, or regeneration. It is for this reason that OCT has been applied in various areas of neurology over the past decade, becoming a hot topic and generating great enthusiasm among neurologists and ophthalmologists. By documenting the ability of OCT to provide key information on CNS diseases, this book illustrates convincingly that the eye is indeed the "window to the brain".

A wide range of mental disorders are considered in the book, each portrayed by a distinguished clinician. Each chapter begins with the description of a paradigmatic case study in order to introduce the reader directly to the patient's lived world. The first-person perspective of the patient is the principal focus of attention. The essential, defining features of each psychopathological phenomenon and the meaning that the patient attaches to it are carefully analyzed in order to "make sense" of the patient's apparently nonsensical experiences. In the second part of each chapter, the case study is discussed within the context of relevant literature and a detailed picture of the state of the art concerning the psychopathological understanding of the phenomenon at issue is provided. An Experiential Approach to Psychopathology, and the method it proposes, may be considered the result of convergence of classic phenomenological psychopathological concepts and updated clinical insights into patients' lived experiences. It endorses three key principles: subjective phenomena are the quintessential feature of mental disorders; their qualitative study is mandatory; phenomenology has developed a rigorous method to grasp "what it is like" to be a person experiencing psychopathological phenomena. While the book is highly relevant for expert clinical phenomenologists, it is written in a way that will be readily understandable for trainees and young clinicians.
