Abstract
Leonardo's heart studies represent the pinnacle of his anatomical endeavours. In his work on the heart, his use of ingenious diagrams as well as detailed representational drawings is cleverly combined with carefully crafted verbal descriptions of complicated physiological concepts. Some of his thinking, developed through drawing, was so advanced that only now with the advent of accessible technology and advances in modern knowledge of the heart, it is possible to re-interpret Leonardo's conclusions and to point out how accurate his logical reasoning and pure observation really was. Several of his ideas continue to sit well alongside our modern understanding of cardiac physiology and heart function. This book will feature all of Leonardo's drawings on the heart and its physiology, accompanied by translations of his accompanying notes. The veracity of Leonardo's work is proven against contemporary dissections of cardiac structure and wherever possible, his illustrations are compared with contemporary images generated by magnetic resonance scanners and high definition ultrasound. It represents the only modern interpretation of Leonardo's works by a practicing clinician and anatomist in a way that is meaningful to cardiology and medical specialists as well as art historians, and the general public.
Contents
1. The Making of a Master: Leonardo, His Life and Times -- 2. Leonardo: Anatomist or Natural Philosopher? -- 3. Leonardo's Use of Drawing -- Leonardo Da Vinci Drawings -- 4. Leonardo's Heart -- 5. Leonardo: A Personal Legacy -- 6. Leonardo Scholarship and the Cataloguing of the Anatomical Manuscripts -- Selected Bibliography.

"This comprehensive, easy-to-consult pocket atlas is renowned for its superb illustrations and ability to depict sectional anatomy in every plane. Together with its two companion volumes, it provides a highly specialized navigational tool for all clinicians who need to master radiologic anatomy and accurately interpret CT and MR images. Special features of Pocket Atlas of Sectional Anatomy: Didactic organization in two-page units, with high-quality radiologic images on one side and brilliant, full-color diagrams on the other; Hundreds of high-resolution CT and MR images, many made with the latest generation of scanners (e.g., 3T MRI, 64-slice CT); Consistent color coding, making it easy to identify similar structures across several slices; Concise, easy-to-read labeling of all figures. Compact, easy-to-use, highly visual, and designed for quick recall, this book is ideal for use in both the clinical and study settings."--Provided by publisher.

Abstract
This Atlas is illustrated with rich pictures of cardiac surgical specimens. It not only contains normal heart specimens but also dissects those specimens, taking pictures from various angles to create a three-dimensional representation. It also includes reviews of the specimens' pathological reviews. Chapter 1 through 10 introduce the normal anatomy of the cardiac chambers and surgical approaches to the heart, while chapter 11 through 28 describe 18 kinds of congenital heart defects. There are a total of over 1,000 images and illustrations in this book, which will be of great interest not only to the surgeons, but also to the cardiologists, anaesthesiologists and surgical pathologists. Editor Xiaodong Zhu is professor and former dean of Fuwai Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Science and Peking Union Medical College. He is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
